Elliotte Friedman: "Smilanic is a 2002 birth year. Jeff Gorton, Kent Hughes and Martin St. Louis all have kids who played against him. They know his game and pushed the Panthers for him." (32 Thoughts)

Article

An interesting tidbit included by Friedman. An interesting connection and it's good to hear they were keen on him. He also noted that the Chiarot trade likely just raised market prices for defencemen, which would be good news if one of our division rivals (Toronto?) has to overpay for a guy like Lindholm or Giordano.

He also mentions:

  1. Two teams that make a lot of sense for Minnesota and Jack McBain: Arizona and Montreal. The Wild are looking for a second-rounder. The Coyotes have five. The Canadiens have one this year, but three thirds. The Wild are also looking for a defender with beef. I’d heard they had interest in Christian Dvorak, but that was dated. They like the player, but can’t fit him now.

  2. Montreal’s also looked at Pavel Zacha

I’d be interested in McBain but hopefully we can get him for a 3rd instead of a 2nd

Borror0:01x36: •

McBain has much worse stats than Jimmy Vesey. I don't get why anyone would spend a 2nd for him. He wasn't PPG until his fourth season of NCAA. The ceiling can't be very high. Seems more of a late round value to me.

I mean a third is basically nothing if you can get him for that and he pans out you look like a genius if he doesn’t no harm no foul

Ultimately a 2nd rounder has what, about 11% chance of making the NHL at all? I don’t know the dude but if he’s a sure NHLer, for a 2nd it’s already pretty much a win

13
Borror0:01x36: •

It's closer to 20% but I get what you're saying.

Usually a second rounder will have much more upside though. Subban, Weber, Debrincat and Aho were all second round picks for example. Hitting that type of player takes some luck but far less than finding a Mark Stone or a Gallagher in the 5th.

The ceiling on McBain isn't very high. We've drafted players like that much later. Xavier Simoneau went for a 6th. Harvey-Pinard went for a 7th. These were CHL overagers with some upside as bottom six wingers. If they don't pan out, no big deal. That's where I place McBain too and why I give him a similar value.

Eazy3006:01x03: •

There’s a lot more player like Nieto or Panik who makes the NHL as a second rounder than there’s second rounders who end up being a Sebastian Aho. It’s not true at all that second round player usually comes with higher upside.

2
TooobHoobLehky's Nicest Stick•

That’s fair enough, I guess that anyway we’re not lacking in quality bottom line-AHL guys anyways. As I said I don’t know the dude, but if his upside is shit, might as well gamble a second

Our 2nd rounder is going to be very high, there’s a big difference between 31st and 45th

3
ejennings87:02x75: •

Don't forget the top of the 2nd round is 33rd overall now :)

I beleive picks 25-40 have a 30-35% chance of playing 100 games. It's a very steep drop of after that.

He's not

Haha I knew there was a connection as soon as I saw he was playing in New England. At least he wasn't a teammate. Progress!

“Is a 2002 birth year”? “Was born in 2002” uses fewer characters, and makes more sense. I swear Elliotte Friedman is a robot trying to sound human.

it's hockey scout jargon

3
perpie8:01x06: •

Ok so now the GM and coach kids are scouts?? /s

6
xanderpo•

That's not the implication at all, lol. The management team knows the kid as they saw him play through the years, they didn't just pick him from a list without knowing him...

amm0ranth:01x06: •

why are we interested in zacha lol

Habsfan_1984•

I really don’t think he’s a fit for us. If we’re drafting one of Wright, Cooley or Savoie then we’re in a good spot at Centre with Suzuki, Dvorak, Poehling and Evans. If we’re trying to move Dvorak to fill other needs (LW or RHD) then maybe McBain makes a bit more sense. Personally Evans and Poehling are great 3C/4C options who can also move around the lineup if need be.

5
Bohmer:01x34: •

Dvorak won't stay here that's for sure. McBean could be move to LW and would ultimately be a depht player (unless he impress). I guess if they can have him for cheap, Lehk is traded for sure, which is why I don't want McBain...

you say “for sure” a lot in something that is pure speculation imo

Denster1:Canadiens:•

Dvorak won't stay here that's for sure

Such a stupid trade that former GM made. We overpaid for a player that made no difference all because of his stupid ego and arrogance

philtank_hehe•

good spot for what? Do you really think poehling is a 3C on a championship team?

3
Habsfan_1984•

Not saying a championship team but that our lineup composition at C is reasonably structured for a playoff team.

1
philtank_hehe•

We clearly need a clear 2C behind zuk right now. Dvorak would shine at 3C, less responsibility and Evans at 4C is perfect also.

Shane Wright come on down.

Apparently theyre interested in Kapanen too

CoachMartyDaniiels•

I’m not saying McCain is the answer, I wouldn’t give up more than a 3rd for him. However, assuming we draft one of Wright, Cooley, Savoie etc.. which would give us a great 1-2 punch. One thing we lack though is size down the middle. I would like us to have a bigger C on our 3rd line for those tougher match ups against Malkin and the other big boy centres in the league. Obviously not just some big guy but someone with some skill and speed too.

I don't even agree with trading him if we are just turning around to take 50 percent of his salary and 1st and 4th and college kid for a premium defense with a lot games still left in him.

Like what is a 1st pick from Florida going to be in 2023, its probably going to be middle of the pack at best.

Only thing I could see is that his contract is going to be unmanageable for the Habs.

You do realize that in a few months, Chiarot is UFA and we have the same chances to sign him than any other team does? And that was also true if we kept him. We could’ve lost him for nothing at all, and now we got a decent prospect, a 1st in next year’s deep draft and a 4th. We can try and resign him if we feel like it at that stage, but that was a great trade. We retain his salary until the end of the year only since his contract will be done after, not like we have cap issues or were after the cup 😂

16
EasyPanicButton:01x06: •

Yeah I kind of realized he was going to be UFA after my comment, so I guess this is pretty damn good.

I just think he is hard to replace in a couple years when we might be looking at some playoff games again. Maybe I am over valuing him. It might be a case of Post Traumatic Subban Disorder.

I feel that. Although, in 4 years, you can expect Guhle as a regular, Romanov in his peak, Eddy probably still around and effective, Mailloux will be amazing if he stays on the right path, and we just got Barron from COL, and I’m sure we can manage to sign a few free agents in the next few years, so I wouldn’t be afraid for Montréal on the defence side of things!

On the offence, I am not worried.

I hope we find a replacement for Carey once he inevitably goes. Allen is great but not necessarily a Cup goalie as of today.

1

Exactly. If we didn’t trade him we could have kept a 31 year old #4 defensemen for the remainder of a meaningless season before he left for UFA.

What is a 1st, a 4th and a prospect going to do in that time? You can’t put skates on a draft pick. /s

Relevant username. Why are you panicking about trading a pending UFA for a 1st+?
