What is the old Sunnyside Cafe in Weaverville?
I worked there with the first owners when they opened in 2000, Patty & Jack. I'm back visiting Hot Springs and was wondering if anyone knows what is there now and if it's worth a visit?

I believe that space is now The Glass Onion, an Italian restaurant. Everyone on this sub seems to love it, I've tried it 3 or 4 times and have been consistently underwhelmed.
The Glass Onion is a copy of every “fancy” senior citizen Italian restaurant in Florida, which kinda makes sense in Weaverville. Perfectly adequate for what it is.
let’s see… Let’s open a restaurant that rocks in a lower rent district and serves some amazing food with reliable service and it just so happens it’s in an area with money and a bunch of gray hairs. Don’t forget they’ve been there 7+ years thru Covid. Yeah, they suck🤪
I ducking love Glass Onion. I’ve been in Weaverville for almost 9 years, and they’ve been here for at least that long. You’ve at least gotta give them props for opening a restaurant in Weaverville when it was still a sleepy little town (i.e. before all the gray hairs with money showed up). And making it. And surviving Covid.
Also, Glass Onion isn’t really an “Italian” restaurant. Not like Vinnie’s is an “Italian restaurant” (not knocking Vinnie’s, by any means). Sure, they’ve got pasta. But they’ve also got all sorts of distinctly American meat and fish entrees, lots of fancy salads that never really interest me, an array of specials, good desserts, and excellent fries.
I’m curious to know what everyone who’s knocking GO considers to be good food in AVL. (Lemme guess, something on Haywood Rd., amirite?)
Didn’t say they suck. Definitely an older vibe every time we’ve gone - perfectly adequate food though, no complaints, just regular old Italian food.
gotcha!
Thanks for the heads up. Doesn't necessarily sound great but I'll probably visit for nostalgia. Working there helped form my young adulthood.
It’s a great restaurant and the service has been spot on. Food is never disappointing! Best (included) house made dinner rolls in all of the AvL area!!! No gray hair here😉
I cannot believe I forgot to mention the garlic knots 🤦♀️
Do you know how they made those crunchy puff quesadillas? What I wouldn’t do to eat one of those after a long day of school.
Makes sense why people on this sub love it, too. ;)
I’ve never heard anyone from Weaverville care for it much (I’m from Weaverville)
Can confirm, but I went a long time ago so it might have changed
Agreed.
It works in a pinch, and that may contribute to it staying busy. It is easier than getting in to a good restaurant downtown if you haven't thought ahead.
