Is it just me or has this been an exceptionally windy winter?

Question

Having lived in the area for over 20 years now I'm no stranger to blustery days, but this year seems well above average for wind warnings. Is this me paying attention for the first time or is it actually windier than normal out there?

The Post did a story a few weeks ago confirming increased windiness in recent years. It's is not just you.

And it always seems to be windy on days when recycling is supposed to be picked up. 🙄 More than once, I've had to run around early in the morning before I leave gathering up our recycling because the wind has blown the bin over and the contents all over the place...

Exactly! Stuff flying everywhere!

Yeah and my recycling comes really early, like 7am, so trying to wait to put it out early is a 50/50 gamble that I'll sleep past it or just forget.

The weather has gradually become hotter and more turbulent over at least the last couple of decades. Until about twenty years ago, I could expect relatively mild summer temperatures punctuated by gentle showers. Nowadays, the summer features excessive heat with driving rains that are frequently preceded by wind gusts of up to 40 mph. Winters may be warmer, but the fronts continue to literally blow through this area. So, be assured that you aren't imagining anything. Climate change is real.

I think so too.

Yes, the number of times I’ve had to return other people’s empty trash cans that blew into my front yard has definitely gone up this year

I’m blown away by it.

Time to update building codes and get ready for the new normal to come.

Remember four years ago they closed the government one day for wind? It’s always windy in March.

That one was particularly bad though. Like tropical storm force without the rain.

I remember this day specifically since I requested PTO for a family member flying in. Family member landed at National but did not complain about the landing. I requested to remove my PTO request since the office was closed and I would have got pay but was denied since my PTO was already approved previous to the OPM notice. Still bitter about that.

Yeah I remember the gov closure day (March 7) because it was my first date with a guy I ended up dating for awhile and also found out that day my sister was in the hospital after being hit by her latest trash boyfriend.

Was the boyfriend blowing around in the wind?

I am so glad I’m not the only one who noticed this. I wasn’t sure if it was because I hardly ever went outside prior to last July or if there was some kind of weather related reason. But YES it’s windy every damn day it seems!!!!

This isn’t so bad. You might be eligible for your insurance to buy you a new roof.

Same. The siding from under our deck blew away too.

Seems to always be on a trash day too with garbage blowing around everywhere.

As an avid golfer I can confirm that March and April always gets shitty weather despite the nice 70 degree days here and there

Despite the increased precipitation we now get?

does that mean we won't all get swamp ass in a couple months

Ok plenty on this. It may take awhile. We will all be dead, but from Business Insider 2018:

"According to a new analysis of rainfall and temperature data by climate scientist Richard Seager from Columbia University, the climate boundary that once traced the 100th meridian has effectively been shifting eastwards ever since the 1980s, with the arid conditions of the western plains slowly expanding into the midwest."

"But the team's modeling suggests altered precipitation and rising temperatures as the century progresses will see the "effective 100th meridian" continue its shift eastward for decades to come, as arid conditions slowly colonize the east."
