Laser guided artillery?

Of course the current war is resulting in a lot of Wikipedia reading regarding all the different systems being used.

The Russians are using laser guided artillery rounds, Krasnopol, introduced to service in 1986.

Could we have an artillery spotter, with the laser designator, and then a very limited amount of Krasnopol rounds for certain arty peices?

The important question is what exactly do, and is it something that makes the game more fun?

To me, I don't think so. Or having to burn a card on a specialist FO vehicle (unless you're the US, OH-58Ds had designators), or pay a premium on artillery for a special round I might not use is kind of lame on the "shooter" end, but also just having some OH-58 deleting my T-80Us from across the map with Copperhead is also lame.

Not to mention it's not just a weapon, but a whole "system" like towed weapons that'd need to be coded in (or a new tank in the game is a model and numbers over existing "structure" you'd have to build in laser designation as a gameplay mechanic, just so Krasnopol and Copperhead could be in game).

Don’t worry, Hellfires only severely tickle, I’m sure a Copperhead wouldn’t hurt much

That's kind of why I asked the "what exactly will it do" question, because one 152/155 mm round in this game even striking directly is no big deal. I think anything short of one shot one kill from a laser guided artillery round would be a huge waste....but that would be pretty garbage to play with(mucking around with laser guidance platforms) or against (LOL u kill mai OH-58 but i pwn 3rd CP this match befoe ded)

How does that work? I mean I know about laser guided bombs dropped from aircraft, but I’ve never heard of laser guided artillery

Same principle but it's an artillery round rather than a bomb.

Less flexible, cheaper and faster than using LGBs from aircraft.

I've never thought about how the guidance for those things actually worked. A laser guided bomb or AGM is one thing, but an artillery shell? They couldn't get away with something simple like the Paveway IIs could they?

The shell has a set of unfolding fins that can guide it and a laser seeker.

It's a little more complex than a paveway kit because the shell needs to have the fins folded in the barrel, so it has to be made to have them.

Of course, but I'm curious as to how does the guidance work? I'm guessing the fins stop the shell from spinning to make corrections easier, but then how does it maneuver in flight? I'm guessing the simple scheme of the Paveway II wouldn't work well, so I'm guessing the seeker is capable of telling how far off the nose of the shell is from the target

They've had severely close calls with copperheads in the marines and army, the round would pick up the laser emitting from the FO and guide in on them instead of the target

It doesn’t, the only think you can do is get a laser grid or laser polar but it’s still an unguided HE round. We have PGKs and Excal

Fuck off. Enough Arty in this game.
