Black version of Dandan based around Ichorid

Deck Discussion

After yesterday's post (EDIT: see https://commandersherald.com/weird-magic-formats-whats-the-deal-with-dandan/) I decided to make a black version of Dandan based around the idea of a shared graveyard and the decision point of which card to eat with Ichorid. I've been doing my best to look for other versions of Dandan other people have made, but to no real success, so I thought I'd share mine here in case anyone is as obsessed with this idea as I am. I have not yet playtested it but I will do so tonight, and wanted some initial feedback.

https://www.moxfield.com/decks/nyAkWRLqR0-aAehQ5vePtg

The idea is that you both have a shared graveyard and will be bringing back the same [[Ichorid]]s into play turn after turn, until one of you decides to eat one of the Ichorids that is. The only real way to fuel the yard, and to save yourself from dying very quickly, is with [[Stitcher's Supplier]] which is an 8 of.

As the game goes on blockers will still be necessary, and more and more lands (which Ichorid doesn't eat) will be left on the yard, which is where [[Worm Harvest]] comes into play. To further help with survivability, and to deal with any excess of worms, are [[Darkblast]], [[Withering Wisps]] and [[Darkness]].

[[Akuta, Born of Ash]] is there to insentivise players to care about their hand size, which they can fuel with [[Sign in Blood]] and [[Skeletal Scrying]], at the cost of a lot of life, and in the latter's case, diminishing the mutual graveyard.

Additional graveyard interaction can be done with the limited amount of dredge (aforementioned Darkblast and [[Dakmor Salvage]]), or even with [[Entomb]]. If you ever draw a card you simply want in the yard, [[Putrid Imp]] will do the job cheaply. If you need something *out* of the graveyard, with aforementioned Skeletal Scrying, [[Coffin Purge]], or just good old Ichorid.

As a final layer of funk I added [[Cabal Therapy]] and [[Grim Reminder]]. [[Bridge From Below]] will die quite quickly with only one graveyard and Ichorids coming in and out, but it can still net you some more permanent zombies if timed correctly, and with Withering Wisps and Worm Harvest, these could get out of hand quickly. (EDIT: removed the bridge from below, too weird with the way the triggers work, replaced with Noxious Revival for extra interaction)

Please let me know if there are any cards that you figure would work better, and I hope one of you is interested enough to try it out. The link will remain the main link to the list I'll be iterating upon.

Great post. Shared library decks sure present a challenge. I like the list can you explain the grim reminder?

KrandumOP•

The idea is that since both players are playing the same deck, Grim Reminder will often be able to be cast in response to a spell that has been played in order to make one player lose 6 life. However, because the library is expended somewhat quickly, and because most cards are only seen as 2-ofs, the card can be played around by looking at which cards still have copies left in the library. Additionally, while the card can be recurred, doing so is extremely telegraphed, and since it can only recur in a player's upkeep, you can get rid of it at any other point if you want it to stop happening.

I quite like that while Dandan's main theme is the shared topdeck (among other themes of course, but I'd argue shared topdeck is the most important), this one largely focuses on the shared graveyard, which was only a rather small aspect of Dandan.

Okay I’m convinced there’s more to the shared deck game now. I need to think about this.

I’m thinking about a game of putting “from the grave” auras on little creatures.

Auratog and griffs boon?

Thanks for putting so much thought into this. Im hoping the momentary focus on DanDan opens up more for shared library games.

Glubglub can't attack unless defending player controls a Swamp.

When you control no Swamp, sacrifice Glubglub.

I like this idea a lot.

I would definitely add 4-8 [[Barren Moor]] for some topdeck sniping and instant dredging.

I think [[Skeletal Scrying]] may prove to be too strong in this setup. Filling your hand while wiping any next-turn threats in the graveyard seems too swingy.

I'd remove [[Bridge From Below]]. As soon as a single creature dies, it creates a single creature (who gets that creature by the way, since the one graveyard is both players?) and then exiles itself.

If you find that the deck mills itself too fast, I think a single copy of [[Gaea's Blessing]] could make for an interesting random reset.

I'm not sure if Ichorid should be the premier creature though because of how they would eat each other quite quickly and the players may stalemate once they're all in exile. I'd still keep a single Ichorid but then have some more returning dudes like: [[Ashen Ghoul]], [[Bloodghast]], [[Bloodsoaked Champion]], [[Brackish Trudge]], [[Coffin Puppets]], [[Dread Wanderer]], [[Haunted Dead]]

I like your interesting take about creatures.

Since we are try to build a “shared graveyard” themed deck I think adding cards that care about the card order in that place like [[ashen ghoul]] [[krovikan horror]] and [[Nether shadow]] along with milling would blend in very well and also add some layer of strategy. Ichorid is nice too but sure it needs some playtesting to understand how many copies are appropriate. I am skeptical too about making it the star of the deck

Would [[Bridge from Below]] work as intended? If I'm reading it right, it doesn't care about the controller, only the graveyard, and since it's both your graveyard and your opponents then wouldn't both triggers occur for each player every time a creature dies?

My (potentially flawed) understanding of the rules thinks that whenever any creature dies, each player gets both triggers, both get to choose which order their triggers go on the stack, but because of APNAP, the non-active player's triggers will resolve first letting them create a 2/2 zombie and then exiling the Bridge, stopping the other player from getting anything.

KrandumOP•

The zombie token will be created even if the bridge has been exiled. However, I certainly did miss that both players would make a zombie... this does not seem very fun, but I'll see if it's just silly tonight, then will consider replacing it with something like Noxious Revival

NeutralPlatypus•

I think only the non-active player gets a token. Their triggers resolve first, so they make a zombie and then exile Bridge. Then the active player's triggers resolve and part of the trigger requires Bridge to still be in the graveyard.

It's a cool idea, but Bridge is just a rules nightmare on a good day.

I absolutely love this whole concept of purpose built shared library decks. Thank you for putting extra effort into expanding the format.

Here's the version I've been working on: https://www.moxfield.com/decks/uCIJM35BbUOYw_-X2ngmgw

Same concept as DanDan. I'm using Rotting Rat, with Madness cards, Carion Feeder to sac them to, Tinybones as a payoff.

I found Misinformation to be the most interesting card. Since its a shared GY/Library, you can use it to try and set up for yourself or screw over your opponent.

In testing, we've been trying where both players start with a Leechridden Swamp in play. The first turn was almost always swamp pass anyway, so it works quite well.

I don't like Coffin Purge, as the person who's turn it is will always get the first opportunity to flash it back (though maybe that's something you like) and the card draw on Cremate is nice even if you are just exiling something to cycle.

Unearth is the most important card in the deck, and what you are almost always hoping to draw into, and holding ways to fuck with the GY to stop your opponent getting a good Unearth.

This is awesome! If you refresh my list you'll see that I edited my list a bunch since I first shared it here, and largely got inspired by your list! I've also built a green one since then :P

I like a lot of what I am seeing here. The madness take is something I'm trying to wrap into the shared library/grave project I'm working on, except the mainline threats I want to manage into the equation are eternal scourge and wasteland stangler to make grave exile act as a kind of currency. Are either of you on discord? I would love to collaborate more on a black based dandan format.

Awesome! Do a green [[Gorilla Pack]] version next, hee hee hee

Hey! Just commenting after the fact to let you know that I have indeed built a green one, based around only being able to win from your lands, both player's having [[Burgeoning]]s out on the field, and [[Life from the Loam]] getting out of hand.

I have a shared library format we call "DC-Fun". It uses the goofiest cards in Magic history, plus a bunch of custom cards (you can add one in each time you win, with design stipulations of course), flame bursts, and accumulated knowledges. I've been working on it for about a decade now and it's really fun.
