If you feel misunderstood and want others to, take a serious look at this...

Seeking Empathy / Support

So I believe I've found probably one of the best articles on ADHD out there. It goes deep into what actually goes on and how we feel. And understands. If your having trouble with people understanding what or how adhd is this is a perfect thing to share. You'll feel understood. I've shared this article with a few and all have expressed how amazing and detailed it is. Here is the glorious article. Hopefully you find it as helpful as I did and others.

ā€œIf you treat patients for their symptoms rather than for a flawed label, you find that the biggest impairment to people’s lives with ADHD tends to be impulsivity,ā€ said Quinn. Hoo boy, that's definitely the truth in my case.

Impulsivity in emotions where I overreact to slights without realising or knowing why.

Impulsivity in actions especially when I was younger which at times put me in dangerous situations

I felt slightly attacked lol

Anyone else save this post and plan to read the article later?

Read it. And saved it so I can start schooling some people. Went down a rabbit hole into medical care in my area to help get a diagnosis and dead end. šŸ™ƒ high ho.

Interest based nervous system.

I read this as internet based nervous system, which to be fair...

I was getting along fine with the author until I got to the part where they say ADHD is a gift.

I’m really struggling with this forced positivity, about something that is a disability.

Sure our brains can do some pretty awesome shit.

But raise a hand if you were diagnosed late (>30 years old), and wouldn’t have preferred to trade your « giftĀ Ā» for a normal brain..

I get the idea, but it’s been a bandwagon I’m finding hard to jump on. And even the author says it after having spent 3/4 of the article explaining how debilitating ADHD is…

I think we can talk about the things an ADHDer only can do or can do better than most, without calling this disability and mental illness, a gift.

BusinessString1OP•

Yeah that is one part of it I didn't quite like. It's not perfect and doesn't possibly explain everything. It's still great and worth showing others. šŸ‘

Hekidayo•

Oh yeah that doesn’t take away the fact that the article breaks down the myths and sYmptoms of ADHD brilliantly!

Yeah I loved that part as well.

Combined with impulsivity, interest-driven nervous systems can lead to issues like emotional hyperarousal, making those with ADHD prone to sudden explosions of everything from anger to sadness to joy.

This is ME

Edit: also ME

In the same way that mild or merely perceived criticism and rejection can cause a person with ADHD to wilt, the smallest forms of encouragement and recognition do wonders to motivate them

I shed a few tears reading this. Thank you for posting it ā¤ļø

Same here

People with ADHD often have at least one or two other conditions, like depression, anxiety, OCD, learning disabilities, bipolar disorder, or substance abuse. ā€œIt takes a really good clinician to be able to figure out, alright, is this other disorder traveling with the ADHD and needs to be treated separately? Or is it caused by the ADHD?ā€

This is still an obstacle psychiatrists and psychologists struggle to deal with successfully, often leading to a later diagnosis or the wrong meds being prescribed.

8
madhatterdiseaseADHD•

One psych in the past said it's caused by ADHD for my situation.

Then my current one says that I've had some mild form of OCD trait that's most likely genetic from my mother because she is OCD, and the things I do doesn't sound like it's caused by ADHD.

So yeah.... Honestly don't know which Doctor is right. Lol

I’m five pages in and I’m shaking. I fucking want to scream in SO FUCKING MANY faces…..READ THIS, MFR, every. Freaking WORD. This is the literal definition of VINDICATION, you guys. Read this piece. Just START reading it. Hang on tight.

I’ve read it, got the link saved, and going to get a couple of people to read it.

Thanks for sharing, OP. Definitely going to get some use out of this.

Seems like a really good article but… I’m sure you all know why I haven’t read it all…

4
BusinessString1OP•

Lol, yeah took me forever but definitely worth coming back to especially if you didn't finish all the way. And share/show it to people who need help understanding.

3
besttimemashup•

It’s sitting, waiting on my list of other things to dip into. I’m having a particularly scatterbrained week but knowing it’s worth it and will help is half the ADHD battle.

Thank you for sharing. It’s a really good article.

I feel lonely because I don’t want to admit that I need a better support system.

Ae99•

This is exactly how I feel about it inside my head and I wish people would understand, but I can never explain it and would rather hide those traits. Only part i disagree with is the ā€œgiftā€

3
BusinessString1OP•

Yup, your not the first one to say that the "gift" part is bad and I certainly agree but other wise it's great.

3
stardustnf•

I sooooo wish the author hadn't included that part. I know so many people who will jump all over that part and use it to negate the rest of the points. And yes, I know that's not a logical thing for anyone to infer, but so many are looking for any excuse to invalidate how incredibly disabling ADHD is. It's beyond frustrating.

3
EverybodyShitsNFT•

Good article. Definitely worth a read

This hits home on so many levels. I've never felt more misunderstood in my entire life while reading this because this article understood me! There are legit research out there that can define me and how I am without people questioning why I do things the way I do. (And I got no answers for them at the time.)

While reading this, I just kept thinking about my previous job.....

I got fired 4 months ago about something that I actually did as I was told, only to have them turn around and gaslight me saying "I didn't say that." And when they approached me about it in the most unnatural setting for an ADHD person, I wanted to place my input about what happened and I actually wrote a written statement about it because I thought that's what you're supposed to do while they, the HR, are going to "investigate". Turns out, they didn't want to take my written statement. They just flat out fired me. And me, trying to explain what happened trying to defend myself, I was automatically coined as me not taking responsibility for the event that happened and instead I "deflected". How do you take responsibility for something that you did because you were told to do it, and then get fired?

Anyways, I realized that workplace, while it's GREAT for ADHD people, the work environment with the staff is NOT. And I think that's most likely the case as to why some people with ADHD can't hold down a job whether they quit on impulse or just get fired because your manager expected something completely different from you, even if you follow the rules and excel on other things.

BusinessString1OP•

I'm so glad I could help you.

madhatterdiseaseADHD•

I also shared this to my sister. She is very familiar with my ADHD and probably the only family member out of the many that can understand how I function.

When she finished reading the article she said, "See this is why I call your name all the time to get your attention and why it works especially when you sleep like a log."

I go, what do you mean?

Her: People with ADHD like you need something to help them snap out of things and calling their name out loud is one of them. I can try and shake you and hit you to try and wake you up, but it won't work unless I yell your name.

Me: . . . . (Remembering that earlier in the week I was almost late for work cuz I was too deep in my dream, and that if it wasn't for her yelling at my name and shouting that it's now 5pm I would have been screwed. I actually heard it in my dream and snapped out of it and woke up. )

3
BusinessString1OP•

I wish my family would understand more of how I think. Good for her.
