And you can thank SCOTUS for saying racist gerrymandering is just fine as long as you pretend it’s partisan gerrymandering

Is it racist gerrymandering in New Jersey too?

If it’s designed to prevent POC from electing the candidate of their choice, then yes

No?

New Jersey Congressional Redistricting Commission tiebreaker John Wallace sided with Democrats this morning and voted for the Democratic delegation’s congressional map to take effect, likely securing safe seats for nine of the state’s 10 Democratic incumbents.

Wallace, a former Supreme Court Justice, justified his decision by saying that while both sides presented him with good maps, fairness dictated that Democrats should have their map selected after the Republican map was chosen in 2011.

“Both delegations adequately applied our standards to their map,” Wallace said. “In the end, I decided to vote for the Democratic map simply because the last redistricting map was drawn by the Republicans.”

I've really enjoyed this resource from 538 for proposed congressional maps.

https://projects.fivethirtyeight.com/redistricting-2022-maps/

It also provides metrics for "fairness" of each states map.

The gerrymandering in Texas is absolutely insane.

145

They look like winding rivers trying to go around rock.

42
wikifeat•

I think we should combine NY and California into one state held together by a single, very snakey, line. It can meander and wind wherever it needs to get there (for funsies) and will not exceed a thickness of 800 ft. New Calinorkia.

5
Sanchopanza1377•

I love this idea. We will route it down I-10 to I-20 upto Dallas. Then I-35 north to OKC. From OKC east along I-40 to I-95. Finally I-95 north to New York.

Imagine the rage when New York and California get out voted by a couple million hillbillies from Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Tennessee, and North Carolina and end up with Ted Cruz as their representative.....

1
sfw77•

Isn't the long strip one along i35 between Austin and San Antonio gerrymandered for democrats though? Or am I mixed up

1
absolute-black•

Part of gerrymandering is to pack as many of your opponents into one district as possible, to minimize the number of districts they control. The entire state is gerrymandered the way the GOP wants, because they've been in power exclusively for decades.

5

People who are in power want to hold onto the power?? Just like any other state

Thank you for the downvotes

Pointing out the obvious here. People in power want to remain in power and rig the process. You can do research and look into other states to see similarities.

-22
hexbatch•

The first sentence is accurate

But this is not how most states work, not this openly corrupt, not so brazen

And this is not at all how a democracy works. In fact, this makes a good tombstone to any Texas democracy. There is no coming back from this, not in normal politics

13

other states are similar, Texas isn’t the only one

-1

Texas is one of the most gerrymandered states in the country. Many states have independent redistricting commissions. This is not normal, no. Not even close.

2
cranktheguyBorn and Bred•

California has independent redistricting commissions. Not every state is as corrupt as Texas.

13

“Independent” sure it’s one party rule just like Texas

0
cranktheguyBorn and Bred•

You can just assume, or you can look up the actual process.

1
huh4tofpv•

California also has a poop patrol to go around and pick up human poop from the side walks and streets.. and cali has the most homeless ppl in America... i can see they are running that state WAYYYYYY better...

-3
The-link-is-a-cock•

No, some states have neutral parties that handle it. You're just so used to Texas corruption that you think it's the norm every where. It's like being a Russian and being suprised you can't just bribe some people to get shit done in another country.

5

No, other states Are just as bad. California one party rule, Utah run by religion ect

1
pickymeek•

Should gerrymandering be allowed?

0
FutureInPastTense•

What gets me is that district 13, seen at the top of the picture around the city of Denton, stretches all the way through the panhandle. I can’t image a place like Denton has much in common with a place like Texline.

93
cranktheguyBorn and Bred•

I live in College Station and currently share a district with north Austin. Any Texan should know those two cities shouldn't be grouped together.

36
imzelda•

Yeah that goes against God.

13
Best-something•

I live in northern Travis county (Austin) and am lumped in with Waco. And same, literally any Texan knows that's insane.

11
cranktheguyBorn and Bred•

Same district. Howdy, neighbor.

6
huh4tofpv•

I'm in tomball and we get lumped in with Houston (Harris county). Same with kingwood (Harris county annexed kingwood cuz they have lots of money.. not Houston is trying to adopt the woodlands which is a completely different county)

1
nomadicfangirl•

Can confirm - My parents live in Amarillo and I live near Denton. We have the same rep. It’s ridiculously stupid.

25
tbdsusboi•

Grew up in Amarillo. Can confirm this confirmation.

7
rixendeb•

My district goes from Austin to Dallas. We don't even have anything in common with the town 10 mins away cause this town is a trumplican shit hole. Yet here we are.

6
primo808•

Fuck texline. Stopped at a gas station there - the only one, bought gas. Asked if I could wash my hands as I was 5 months post organ transplant and immunocompromised. Some redneck kid says "naoo baffroom" and then I look at the sink behind an empty counter with nothing near it and I'm like "I'm immunocompromised can I use that?""No" "seriously? Why not" "no". Is there any other place in town with a bathroom?""No"

Piece of shit

DFW is completely fucked for representation. Republicans look down on people in/near the cities, and they'll dilute your vote to mean jack shit.

47
Ribauld•

Yep, they look down on cities, complain about them, bitch about liberals, and then come to them for medical care and entertainment.

26
HobbyBobby4•

And money. Texas brings in all these companies for profit and then complain about the liberals brought here because of those jobs.

Without liberals, this state would sink.

19
jabdtx•

Your final sentence is the only sentence that ever needs to be said to any TX conservative on any possible topic. It is irrefutable.

2
Ribauld•

I also forgot recapture. The cities fund rural schools through property taxes and the robin hood program.

2
v4por•

Except when it backfires, like it did in the last midterms. Thanks to changing demographics, Republicans lost 12 congressional seats in 2018, despite them drawing the Congressional maps.

https://www.texastribune.org/2018/11/07/dallas-county-republican-gerrymander-backfires-2018/

5
Scrappy_76•

Can we talk about how the 13th which is in the panhandle has a long arm that comes in and takes out the core of Denton.

45
UncookedCapacity•

What more proof do you need that Texas is not a democracy?

37
canarialdisease•

What if anything can be done about this?

21
Brainroots•

Federal election law mandating the number of straight lines that can surround a congressional district, and special circumstances where curved lines are allowed like at borders. They could still gerrymander but under much tougher optimization constraints.

37
LuciusAurelian•

If there is a dem govenor in 2030 he could veto the maps and negotiate for fairer ones. More ideally a state constitutional amendment to establish a citizen redistricting commission like they have in Michigan.

16
timelessblur•

Sadly they could do that but then the GQP would what they did in Missouri and make a new one that has a one liner people want but remove the oversight of district lines. Missouri was going to get a non partisan lines this year but they slip that in and hide the part they can gerrymander to high heaven again.

The GOP knows they are dying and the only way they can stay in power is to cheat.

7

Vote Democratic down the ballot on November 8. But more importantly, speak to multiple friends and family about doing the same. That is the only way we’re going to ensure change is if we have Democratic politicians in Texas office. These insane gerrymandering laws were 100% made by Republicans, they are driving this state into the ground. If you are not a white, cis male, you’re fucked.

3
sheffmeister62•

Districts should just be comprised of counties and based on population. Larger counties with smaller total Population could be combined with other like counties to get them to roughly the same population size as an urban county like Harris or Travis. Too bad that doesn’t benefit Republicans.

17

That’s so effin stupid.

15
OnWingsofGerbels•

Beto almost won Collin County last time, so the diced it up with a zipper effect that goes up to Oklahoma and out to Texarkana. Went to my normal polling place, and the parking lot was a literal Trump rally of people who came in from the sticks. These fuckers are evil (and good at it).

9
_benp_•

It's bad people, behaving badly. But that has nothing to do with gerrymandering. Beto was running for Senate, which is elected statewide. Gerrymandering doesn't effect statewide races.

1
rixendeb•

It effects state wide elections when it's made to make sure only specific representatives get elected to hold back any progress if the state elects a dem governor.

3
_benp_•

In the big picture, you are right that gerrymandering creates a power base in the legislature.

But gerrymandering *DOES NOT* affect your vote for any statewide race: Senators, Governor, Lt Governor, etc.

1
OnWingsofGerbels•

No it does impact Statewide issues. It can impact turnout. That crazy parking lot rally was at my polling place was meant to intimidate. It was a deliberate show of force. Giant trucks decked in in Trump flags. When people know their vote has been effectively cancelled they tend not to bother showing up.

1

Y’all, please remember to vote Democratic down the ballot on November 8th so we can start making positive changes in this horrible state. Please begin talking to your friends and family now about why it’s necessary we vote Democratic politicians in and why the current Republican politicians are oppressing all Texans, especially if you are not a white, straight male.

7
daschyforever•

That’s the only way they win . Smdh. No matter . We will still show up in waves they can’t deny the outcome !

5

Blue wave coming in hot November 8th! Talk to your friends and family now about voting Democratic down the ballot and why it’s important.

2

Well they definitely can deny the outcome, lol.

1
ElToberino•

And just north of that, you can see the Cthulu shaped 4th district. The 3rd only went R by about 10 points in the last election, so the 4th, which is mostly the redneck areas around the Oklahoma border, now has a tentacle that grabs the tech corridor around Legacy and the tollway, my bluish neighborhood near UTD and the largely Hispanic part of east Plano.

If I were to walk in a straight line north from my house, I would cross the border between the 3rd and 4th districts 6 times before leaving Collin County.

5
gking407•

… and that’s how the US experiment came to a close. The End

4
captstinkybutt•

If we just vote blue no matter who (again) this will finally stop

4
Lustiges_Brot_311•

All politicians should be required to drive to their most northern, eastern, western and southern in a certain time period while only using roads in their districts. Lol

4
fire2374Central Texas•

I totally thought this was district 2 from the shape then I saw Fort Worth and Dallas. Why group people together geographically when you can manipulate it to dilute their votes and representation?

3
Edgelands•

3
Xyz14231•

R’s wouldn’t run in a fair race. If they don’t have the advantage they’re not playing.
