Beyond 'Beyond the Aquila Rift'

Most people here know about the freeze frame or slow motion "secrets" of Aquila. But I see less talk about the episode's message or the inspirations behind the original story (although most things I found, I did find on Reddit).

If you're like me and consider Aquila one of the best, if not the best episode of LD+R, you might find this thing I wrote about all of the above intreesting:

Inside, you'll find all the secrets listed, plus my two interpretations of the story, and a comparison between the original story and a certain old one from Normad Spinrad.

Thank you for sharing, it was a great read and I loved the spider hints. Although I did get confused by the random sentence about Russia.

Yeah, it is out of the blue but it was the first thing on my mind when I thought of an example of creating an alternate reality to live in. Many Russians remain pro-war despite the evidence, and others just turn off, pretending this reality does not exist. Here's an example: https://www.theguardian.com/world/2022/jul/30/people-are-turning-off-muscovites-put-the-war-aside-and-enjoy-summer

It's all a universal thing, I learned about long ago it when trying to find the answer to: "what happens to cults when the apocalypse does not start on the prophesied day?" (answer: some people check out of such cults but others become even more fanatic). But the sheer scale of the alternate reality that millions and millions of Russians believe in -- despite knowing deep, deep down it's not real -- made me mention it in the post.

We're used to talk fiction, especially stuff like hard sci-fi, disconnected to the current daily events of the world. I guess this makes the comparison unexpected, to put it mildly. I get that, but I still thinks it - sadly - fits the subject like a glove.

What are the freeze frame and slo-mo secret?

I would read the link, but spider hints mostly.

I really wish I could recommend this episode to my kids. It was a little over the top.

Just saying, Putin is no "small-time crook". Maybe an extremely large world-boss level crook!

he has no money and very little support from his own party, I'd consider that a small time crook

Yo, don't underestimate your enemy. He just started a large scale war, he has full control over the country and his party. The protests died pretty much down. He can blackmail countries like Germany and large parts of africa. Oh and let's not forget the thousands of nuclear bombs.

GDP is irrelevant for a totalitarian system. Look at north Korea. Saying that he is small is just stupid. A kind of coping strategy.

He is currently in his currently in a fourth term as President of Russia and commands a nuclear arsenal.

Really enjoyed reading this! That episode has always stayed with me - I comment about it every few months in this subreddit. Really insightful take - keep it up

The 90s Outer Limits hasn't aged well at all, but it is the reason that I love anthology science fiction. Tempests really fucked me up when i saw it, and it does remind me of this episode a bit.

Interesting article, and you caught some spider things I've never caught before, but completely unnecessary throwaway line about Russia.

What a fantastic read. ‘Beyond the Aquila Rift’ is one of my favourite LD+R eps too, and originally what got me hooked on the series. Brilliant to see such an in-depth analysis - I never knew there were so many Easter eggs either! Particularly enjoyed your reference to the Greek myth of the Lotus-Eaters, totally agree it would be a major inspiration to the episode. Thanks for sharing!

My question is, did Thom bump uglies with an alien spider creature or was that all in his head?

2
AdrianChmOP•

All in his head. The only time he left the surge tank was at the end, when "Greta" turned off the simulation. Question remains, though, how exactly is she making him "dream". We don't see any bio-cables or whatever on him, so I guess it's a form of telepathy. Can't recall atm if this was ever explained in the original story.

I don't think the short story explicitly says, but I think it's telepathy. Thom realizes he's in a simulation when he realizes that everyone on the station looks familiar, because Greta doesn't have other humans to draw from except what's in Thom's head.
