The hair on my arms stood up when Mother Abagail told Nick that her grandmother had “the shine”. The continuity between his books is well known and canonized, but it gets me every time.

I grew up hearing my grandpa telling me about how when he was younger, he used to work from sunup to sundown in the fields. He used to boast that kids today would kill themselves if they had to endure the hours and conditions that he did.

Now, a year or so after his death, I reflect on his stories: I work more hours in a day than he did at my age, and for lower wages and benefits. He worked sunup to sundown to afford a relatively stable life with multiple kids and a house; I work from 8 AM to 10 PM at two jobs so my wife and I can scrape by. This doesn’t account for the fact that I wake up at 6:45 so I can make it to work on time, 40 miles away. My only day off is Sunday, which I mostly use

I know, I know, NATO isn’t going to get involved - but still. We’re just going to take this on the chin? On top of climate change, domestic issues, and global covid?

Does anybody care? Have we just resigned ourselves as a culture to the death spiral?

Im exhausted knowing that Ukraine could be invaded 1939 style tomorrow and I still have to show up to my 2 bullshit jobs. Whats the point of ANYTHING? The clock is ticking down. Nobody is prepared or interested in whats to come.

I think I should start therapy again.
