As the title said, I'm new to Home Assistant and home automation in general. I've lurked here and r/homeautomation, so I have some idea on what is possible, and what is feasible. I have installed HA on a Raspberry Pi, though not as the OS, but separately on Raspbian. I tried to mess around with it a bit, but got overwhelmed quickly.
With that background out of the way, I'm heading to Ikea tomorrow, and I'm thinking on getting some Tradfri lights to dip my toes into the whole home automation thing. I prefer not to use a hub and getting (semi-) locked in one ecosystem, or paying extra for what HA essentially is doing. That being said, I have figured out I'll need a way for my Pi to talk to th
I got the Humble Bundle with all DLC a few months ago, which left me with some leftover Steam keys. Since it's the season of giving, I'm giving them away. First some rules. It won't be first come first serve. I'll have a reply for each of the keys I have left. If you want that DLC, just reply to the comment, and I'll use random.org to find out who gets the key. I will only consider the comments that reply to my reply. So a comment to another comment won't be counted when figuring out the winner. Please only reply to one comment (ie try to get just one DLC). If I find someone that did try to get multiple DLCs I will not count them when figuring out the winner. And
This run started out as an achievement run, with the main focus being 7 Centuries and S.P.Q.R. As one can imagine, I picked up a few more along the way. A comprehensive list of all of the achievements I got:
My ancestor Leon Skleros had visited the ancient oracle at Delphi and had visions of our house gaining glory, power and restoring the ancient Roman Empire to its former glory. The rise to power of this house was fraught with multiple setbacks, most of them due to the incompetence of previous emperors. And perhaps an unhealthy obsession with nepotism. Eventually, the realm was stabilized, with Anastasios IV 'the Just' being the first in a long line of Skleros emperors in 923. Just as the soft and weak targets to the North were starting to dwindle, and thus the eyes of Constantinople started to look East. The once mighty Abbasid Empire fell to internal squabbling, and the decadence of their le
I started out in Venice as a Jewish Khazar patrician, and murdered fought my way to the top. I've now come to the point where I can comfortably take on pretty much everybody in my vicinity (15k personal levies, 37k retinue, and so much money I don't know what to do with), so I decided to retake the Holy Land from the infidels. Sadly, when I took Jerusalem, I wasn't very careful, and also besieged the Silk Road trade post there, destroying it in the process.
This wouldn't be a problem, were it not that I'm slightly over my trade post limit (119/13), due to my fellow patricians being very unlucky (I'm beginning to think there's a snake problem in Venice). "No worries!" I thought "I'll

New year, new me. Quite literally. I don't know what got into me, but it's like some otherworldly force took me over. My mind turns to gold and to war. My eyes look East towards the heretic muslims.
The breaking of the Umayyad caliphate has created opportunities, but I feel the Caliph Al-Mansir Abbasid wields too large a host. For now.
I feel the Roman blood running through me, I feel Alexander the Great's blood running through me. I know I will not complete this vision I have in my lifetime. I shall instruct my son, Leon, to continue my work.
My first order of business is to crush Emir Hassan, so I fully control Anatolia. Next, I shall take on these heathens in
My laptop has died (due to my own stupidity), and I want to replace it with something homemade. But since this is the first time I'm doing something like this, I'd like some feedback. I've loosely based my build around the Logical Increments fair to good tier, and made some adjustments so I can buy it all from one place. I'm also planning on ordering this stuff in about 24 hours, so I can make it a Christmas present to myself.
For the moment, I'm planning on having a decent base to later expand on. I'll use it mostly for programming basic applications, and some light to medium gaming (eg: Dwarf Fortress, Kerbal Space Program, Terraria, Oblivion, the odd match of TF2...). Momentarily, I don'
Short summary: I'm working on making a nifty pdf of Collabris (using Naturalcrit's Homebrewery), and I need help. If you think you can help, let me know in one of the comments.
Some of you here might have seen my cleaned up pdf of Collabris. I'm working on making it look better, and my plan is to make it look and feel like the Sword Coast Adventure Guide (SCAG).
But I need some help with that. I'd like it to be illustrated, but my talents are severely lacking in that department. So if you would like to help out with some illustrations, or know someone that does, that would be great.
This post is about finding a more balanced way of determining abilities with random rolls. The random method described in the PHB (roll 4 six-sided dice, remove the lowest one, sum the rest or 4d6d1: roll 4 dice with 6 sides and drop the lowest 1 I will use this type of notation henceforth) provides a range of 3 through 18, whereas the standard array and the variant point-buy provide a range of 8 through 15. In this post, I provide another alternative. Many have been given before me, and without doubt, there will be many after me. The alternative I provide is 1d9+7. In my opinion, this will provide a good distribution of abilities.
I'm doing this research because I hear many comp
