I am having a hard time finding it right now, (likely just using the wrong set of search parameters) but iirc, several years ago, we detected methane levels in the Martian atmosphere that were intriguing and "could be an indicator of life, but could also be explained by geological forces".

Again, iirc, the science folks concluded it was a cool geological process that may have been a remnant of some older volcanic processes sort of finally winding down(?).

But water is a big deal! Does this discovery change any part of that analysis?

Is there any other data that teams will be scrambling to re-examine in light of this discovery?

Are there papers out there that say "Now, if we were to dis

I picked up several of the classic hmong chicken herbs for Tshuaj Rau Qaib, (because I am low key certain that soup is part of why I never got Covid, and it's the single most soothing thing in the world in winter) when I was out at the Hmongtown Marketplace this weekend, but incoming storm drove me and the merchant inside before I could ask all of my questions.

Please forgive my ignorance, spelling, and any cultural misters I make here. I am not hmong, and I don't want to or intend to appropriate anything.

Just a plant nerd trying to learn more new stuff every year and make tasty food.

The plants I'm most curious about are: Ko Taw Os Liab and Zej Ntshua Ntuag.

Basically title. Call me a gambler, call me bold, call me mad. I'm gonna say it and risk summoning the wrath of the North Wind: I don't think we're going to get another hard frost.

I have some hot peppers that have already hardened off and are thriving in the cold frame, and they're ready to expand into bigger pots. The lowest overnight temps on my local 10 day forecast are in the mid-high 40s.

Will those temps nip my peppers? Wait for 50s? Yolo?
(Don't tell me to wait for historical last frost date, lol. I willfully refuse this sensible advice.)

I have a really old free standing garage in St Paul that has started to lean at an "Uh-oh" angle, that I need to take down before it falls down.

It's at least 100 years old in part, with a few modern upgrades and patches. Complete crap in some parts, but it also has some of that super old, dense, hard "barn wood" type timber and very old windows.

Anyone suggest any contractors who'd be good at pulling it apart?

Or, particularly anyone who would be interested in cutting me a break on labor for the erm, "salvage" (?) of those old materials?

(Bonus for any concrete companies to pour a new slab)

The most recent post I can find on this is almost a year old, and I know tablet tech moves fast sometimes.I've got CS on my Cintiq and my iPad, and when I'm working on the iPad, I'm just so much slower. I tried the android companion app, and it...helps...soooort of.

I'm looking for something to replicate the tactile experience of "shortcut buttons I don't have to look at" that I have set up on my Expresskeys. Needs to be: wireless, low footprint, decently durable. A keyboard will not work. (Our household has too many floating keyboards already; don't ask.)

Seeing a lot of mixed reviews of the Tabmate.

What are people using, loving, hating?

And if so, what are you keeping an eye on?

Starting seeds early? Watering shrubs? Winter sowing modifications?

I am well aware of Minnesotan weather's fickle sense of humor and fools springs...but this is historic, and it seems at least plausible that we might see a really early last frost, and a really early wave of hot dry days.

I find myself wondering often if or how to prepare.

I'm considering starting at least one of my flats of onions a few weeks early, and maybe even half of my celery or a few peas or other crops that really need cool weather.

I'm also strongly considering giving a few of my young trees and shrubs a few buckets of water if we don't get some real precipitation

I've never been one for heroes in general, and most folks in this sub know there's usually something wretched in the pasts of most famous folk. And time is a brutal slayer of idols.

But who do you dare put your hope in? Who are your Christmas Anti-bastards? Who would you have to eat six shovels full of crow if their allegation tapes were revealed?

Dolly Parton and Jose Andres are currently my pop culture candles in the void...who are yours?

So, there's snow on the ground here, my seed catalogues haven't all come, and my inbox is already bursting with "gift ideas for your gardener". I've already seen a few thoughtful "would this be a good gift?" threads here, and my relatives are pestering one another for hints on if I need another pair of gloves (I do not.)

With apologies to the mods if this violates sub rules (advertising?), I thought it'd be fun to ask what ya'll are hoping the garden gnomes bring you for winter holidays this year. Bonus points for small businesses that need extra support!

What garden-centric gifts (or memberships, books, donations to good causes) are you hoping your loved ones would get you this year?

What worked? What didn't?

What do you already know you're ordering again as soon as seed catalogs come out?
What's something new that you tried that was such a success you want to hype it up?
What's on your "NEVER AGAIN" list?
What did you see in another garden you want to try this year?

I'll go first:
Black and Blue Salvia! Oh my goodness! I'll need some more of these for next year. I have two hummingbird nests in my yard fighting over these resplendent beauties.

More natives! - They take a little bit to get going compared to other plants, but my native flower garden really started to pop off this year. I want to expand it, and plant more densely next season. Polle

I have a species of vaguely woodlouse-inspired alien beings.

They evolved in super hot temperatures and super high pressures within a Jupiter-esque situation, and are silicon based lifeforms with their outer shell composed of an osmium/bromide crystalline structure.

Assume each Osmium Woodlouse has a total mass of about 200KG.

If you were to load a rolled up Osmium Woodlouse Ball into the bore of like, a space musket, or space torpedo...then what?

Got some friends coming next summer. Every year we swap hosting/vacationing in on anothers' proverbial backyards, and I'm up next year.

One of the things the group really wants to do is spend time at a lake. Cribbage, check. Fire pit, I can find. But they also want to ride a tube or water-ski.

This is a part of MN Lake-ing I have never been able to afford or opted for. We were more dock/pontoon folk growing up. But I wanna show my lovely friends their Dream Lake Vacation.

Are there resorts that could do this sort of thing as a package?

I'm open to a variety of lakes. I was considerinf Carlos or Darling in Alexandria but...wherever. I just don't even know what to call the go-fast boats.

In u/littlegrotesquerie 's delightful shanty thread, u/ZacharyLewis97 requested another jaunty tune of oceanic woe. I answered the call, and was subsequently asked to post it in a separate thread. Please enjoy the stupid product of me being very bored in an airport bar for far too long.
(To the tune of "the Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald)

Far under the waves off Newfoundland and down
Near the great wreck they once called Titanic
Midst the debris and groans of her timeworn old bones
Five new graves now adorn the Atlantic

That haunted seafloor, that siren to explore,
