against the fourth industrial revolution

The Fourth Industrial Revolution is here. We are promised green machines, guaranteed incomes, calibrated cities, standardized happiness, and maybe some immortality too — oh, with just a little more surveillance and some non-human casualties along the way.

What is the actual agenda? Why does the left appear paralyzed in the face of ever-tightening control? What historic impulses led to this moment? What are the ethical and intellectual limits of science? What is the antidote to the technocratic mind?

Pick any question and you will inevitably end up here: What does it mean to be human? Who are we in relation to everyone else riding this mossy spinning sphere as she traces ellipses around the nearest star?

If these questions interest you — and the prospect of an unapologetically radical feminist mod doesn't offend you — then stick around. Things are about to get weird.

The opposite of life is not death, but to become a mechanism.

Monica Sjöö and Barbara Mor

Philosophy means nothing unless it is connected to birth, death, and the continuance of life. Anytime you are going to build a society that works, you have to begin from nature and the body.

Susan Griffin

The world is not a mechanism made up of separate parts, but a whole made up of smaller wholes.

So subtle and so well rationalized have the arts of technocratic domination become in our advanced industrial societies that even those in the state and/or corporate structure who dominate our lives must find it impossible to conceive of themselves as the agents of a totalitarian control. Rather, they easily see themselves as the conscientious managers of a munificent social system which is, by the very fact of its broadcast affluence, incompatible with any forms of exploitation. At worst, the system may contain some distributive inefficiencies. ...

True, the foolproof system again and again bogs down in riot or apathetic rot or the miscalculations of overextended centralization; true, the chronic obscenity of thermonuclear war hovers over it like a gargantuan bird of prey feeding off the bulk of our affluence and intelligence. But the members of the parental generation, storm-tossed by depression, war, and protracted war-scare, cling fast to the technocracy for the myopic sense of prosperous security it allows.

By what right would they complain against those who intend only the best, who purport to be agents of democratic consensus, and who invoke the high rhetorical sanction of the scientific worldview, our most unimpeachable mythology? How does one take issue with the paternal beneficence of such technocratic Grand Inquisitors? Not only do they provide bread aplenty, but the bread is soft as floss: it takes no effort to chew, and yet is vitamin-enriched.

"Ism-ism" — if you will please pardon the coining of yet another "ism" — is perhaps the most destructive, and reactionary, disease of political movements. Tyranny comes from it, and so does defeat. But by the time a movement can be reduced to its "isms," it deserves defeat because it has been taken over by an acquiescence to authority that intrinsically negates any possibility of real rebellion, real creation, an infusion of new values based on what we can learn from reality when we face it unarmed by ideological orthodoxies.

The purpose of theory is to clarify the world in which we live, how it works, why things happen as they do. The purpose of theory is understanding. Understanding is energizing. lt energizes to action. When theory becomes an impediment to action, it is time to discard the theory and return naked, that is, without theory, to the world of reality.

Call out to the plants if you want to learn the secret of renewal. You must follow the green ones, and find out how they live; for they are the clever alchemists who keep the world going. You must visit an ancient rainforest, like the one where I live — Old Mother Forest I call her — and sit under the trees. If you want to know what's eternal, and beyond forever, ask them. ...

Even under extreme assault, plants are able to regenerate and revitalize a place. Their desire to live is fierce, tenacious, and inspirational. They are masters of strategies; full spectrum, I'd say. If you want to survive the holocaust of planetary proportions that is upon us all, you must defend the plants, and help them, or you must get out of the way, so they can get on with their planet-healing work. You must ally with them against the machines. You must observe their rules. Geniuses that they are, and wizards at transforming matter and energy, they cannot combat hubris if you are messing around with them; telling them what to do, and choosing one over the other, playing games with their bodies, as if they are stupid mindless things.

If you want to create cultures of sustainability, then again, listen to the green ones, and visit an ancient forest. Here, the mighty trees with their swirls of tender plants, and interweaving fungal allies, and flashes of colorful animals can show you how community, fecundity, and diversity lead to immortality.

We are playing with a genetic bomb, except that people, because they can't see through all these links, don't see it with the same kind of anxiety as they do with the nuclear bomb. But the genetic bomb is worse because after nuclear bombs explode they have radiation effects, but the radiation doesn't keep creating its own explosions.

Back in 1973 I was a medic for the American Indian Movement during the occupation of Wounded Knee. We were surrounded by about 3,000 federal troops. They were shooting at us and they killed two people, wounded 46. And I went to the leader of the American Indian Movement occupation there, Russell Means, and said, "Russell, we don't have any hope of winning this. So what are we doing here?"

And he said to me, "We're not here because we're concerned about the odds against us. We're not here because we're concerned about winning or losing. We're here because it's the right place to be and the right thing to do."

Somewhere along the stormiest section of that westernmost shore is a cave where they say the Old Woman of the World once lived, with her companion Trickster Crow — but no one I've met has ever found that cave, though many have searched, and many have drowned in the process. Maybe she's still there, the people whisper — there by her great fire, stirring the cauldron of soup which contains all of the seeds and all of the herbs and the essence of all the growing and living things in the world. Maybe she's still there, working on the most beautiful weaving in the world, with its fringe of sea-urchin quills; day and night, weaving the world into being. Maybe she's still there, singing over the bones of all the creatures of the world, singing them back to life ...
