Would you consider Patriots-Broncos to be an actual rivalry, or just an extension of the Brady-Manning rivalry?

I've often wondered about this. Do you guys think that there will continue to be a rift between these teams after the QBs retire?

It's just a Manning/Brady extension.

LutzExpertTeraPatriots•

There was a small rivalry already. Jake the Snake gave Brady his first ever playoff loss back when, and McDaniels went from NE to Denver and created a disaster.

So while each fanbase held some animosity, I agree it's 95% Brady/Manning.

detox101Broncos•

The pats and broncos did have a rivalry going back before manning. They were the first two afl teams to ever play. Jake the snake had a perfect record against Brady (while manning and his colts kicked the shit out of the broncos). The pats blew out tebow in two games. Your right with jake giving Brady his first ever play off loss.

The Colts/Pats rivalry really died down which shows its an extension of Brady-Manning.

118
nitram9Patriots•

Well if Luck keeps it up it's not going to die down much further. The only reason it's waned is that when we've played recently we've raped them. But the Colts seem to be pretty good and are probably going to challenge us sooner or later and then it's on.

-22†
killer9547NFL•

Yes, but the main reason the Colts and Patriots became a rivalry is because of Brady and Manning, even thought they met almost every year in the playoffs for a 3-4 year stretch.

I think the reason Broncos and Colts fans don't like the Patriots is simply because very few fan bases like the Patriots. They are one of the most disliked NFL teams, thats just the way it is.

32
key_lime_piePatriots•

Colts/Patriots was a rivalry before Brady/Manning. They were in the same division for a long time. Once the divisions split, it was still a rivalry because Brady/Manning meant both teams finished first, which meant both teams played each other in the regular season and had a good chance of playing again in the postseason. Now that Manning is gone and they are no longer in the same division, most of the reasons for the rivalry no longer exist, but if Luck does what Manning did, the rivalry will flare up again.

20
GoogleBetaTesterColts•

Colts fans are still keeping it alive on our end. Most Colts fans still hate the Patriots more than any other team. I think about the only thing that could kill it at this point would be 20 years of Patriots mediocrity.

1
key_lime_piePatriots•

If you don't remember the Patriots pre-Brady, I'm sure you probably don't think of the Broncos as rivals.

But if you were old enough to remember the pre-Manning, pre-Brady days, you know that Patriots/Broncos was a rivalry before Manning and Brady showed up. The first game in AFL history was played between the Patriots and Broncos on a Friday night in 1960. The teams played each other twice a year while the AFL was still around, with the Patriots winning the majority of those games. They played sparingly in the 1970s, but once Elway came to town, the Broncos started handing the Patriots their ass on a regular basis. The year after the Patriots reached Super Bowl XX, they lost in the divisional round to the Broncos. In the '96 season, a confident 7-3 Patriots team strolled into Denver and got steamrolled 34-8 in an embarrassing Monday night game that had drunk patrons at the Ground Round in Cleveland Circle swearing heavily at John Elway. The Patriots were spared a rematch thanks to a Jaguars upset in the playoffs, but Elway finished undefeated in his career against the Pats. Then in 2006, the Broncos handed Tom Brady his first playoff loss. The rivalry ebbs and flows more than traditional rivalries, because the two teams are in different divisions and don't often see each other, but it's far more than just Brady-Manning.

Why would you say such an awful thing to such a great man?

1
spndl1Broncos•

Thank you for this. I'm glad someone has a memory longer than 2 years.

Has the rivalry heated up again since Manning came to town? Of course. But we did play the Patriots in the playoffs with Tebow (well, both teams were on the field, anyway).

When you're generally on the winning side of things (which the Patriots were for a decade+ before Manning came to town, minus Jake the Snake), it's easy to discount a rivalry, but those with longer memories can respect the rivalry and enjoy their good fortune while it lasts.

10
Fig_Newton_Patriots•

Just a Brady-Manning thing. It is to me, the greatest generational rivalry in NFL history.

28

I hope one day we get to see a rivalry as great as this one again

2†
thejergBroncos•

Wilson Kaepernick could if they both keep rising and stay with their teams

12
aatencio91Broncos•

Are Wilson and Kaepernick better than Cam, RG3, and Luck? I know Luck, Cam, and RG3 don't play each other 2-3 times a year like Kaep and Wilson do, but all 5 should be REALLY good players for a long time. Seems like some kind of rivalry should arise there.

6
thejergBroncos•

There will likely be some kind of ongoing media discussion about them, but to be a rivalry you really have to go head to head on something of a regular basis. Even better of those games are hotly contested.

3
gosioux49ers•

Complete homer opinion obviously, but I think Kaep has the highest ceiling

-5
BetaFoxtrotPackers•

Eh, what makes Brady/Manning so great is the fact that they were the top or close to top QBs for the majority of their careers. Wilson and Kaepernick are good but I'd be really surprised if either of them end up even close to Brady or Manning in terms of all time greatness. SF/SEA is a very young rivalry still but at the moment I'd say that it's more the result of their elite defenses than their QBs.

6
TheungryPatriots•

I don't see that rivalry as about the QBs at all...

6
skyfire23Patriots•

I don't either but when I really think about the Colt/Pats rivalry it was never really about Brady/Manning on the field, only as a narrative. The true rivalry on the field was always Manning vs. Bill's defense.

Garoppolo-Luck if things go as planned for the Dark Lord.

1
TheNeeshManBroncos•

It seems to be a different crowd on reddit but I have spoken to quite a few Pats fans IRL that have definitely claimed a more respect driven rivalry before Manning came. Not the hate-filled rivalry that it is today.

Elway was 11-0 vs the Pats in his career. Broncos gave Brady his first ever playoff loss. The Broncos are the only team with a winning record vs BB/Brady. Pats absolutely destroyed Tebow mania.

But most Pats fans on r/nfl say no, though. So its whatever.

17
BingBongtheArcher19Broncos•

I was going to say much the same thing. There really should be a Broncos Patriots rivalry, regardless of Manning Brady. The history of the teams goes all the way back to the very first AFL game (which the Broncos won). Then you've got the Elway years where they never beat us, Shannon Sharpe's phone call to the President, the Broncos winning record against Brady and Belichick, the Broncos being the first team to beat Brady in the playoffs (which ended their run for a 3 peat), the Patriots ending the Tebow led 6 game winning streak in dominating fashion and then ending Tebowmania for good in that playoff beating.

It makes no sense to me that Patriots fans wouldn't consider the Broncos a rival once they understand the history between the two teams.

11
kaptinkangarooBroncos•

Wait.... History didn't start three years ago?

6

I wouldn't even call it that. We really reserve hate for the Jets/Dolphins/Yankees/Canadiens.

Meh. It's become a pretty decent playoff rivalry, but I don't know that the hate even comes close to the Jets.

3
[deleted]•

To be fair, I don't think anything can be hated as much as the Jets.

3
TheungryPatriots•

I haven't really felt any hate for the Jets, since they regressed to the eternal 8-8 mean.

3
SodomySeymourPatriots•

Giants

2
FuqwonPatriots•

I guess maybe younger fans don't like the Giants because of the Super Bowls?

I don't really hold a lot of animosity. I really liked LT back in the day and Belichick has such a long history with the Giants it's hard to really hate them.

Plus I have a lot of older family that are Giants fans from back before the Patriots existed.

2
tossinPatriots•

Eh, I feel like hating the Giants for beating the Pats in two big games is acting a little like a sore loser. They don't play each other nearly enough (every 4 years) to really stroke much hatred.

that Tom Brady 3rd down punt against us

Did people actually take offense to that? I figured it was just Von Miller being a little bitch.

8†
IComeUpWithBadIdeasBroncos•

Yeah. I mean I'm over it now but back then I was pissed. Just because you're up by like 35 with little time left doesn't mean you have to be a cock and punt it with your Quarterback on 3rd down because you know we can't do anything to come back.

(For the record, what I was thinking then. Like I said, I'm over it now.)

5†
[deleted]•

I don't think Bill was trying to be a dick, I just think that all teams to experimental things like this because you CAN take the risk. Kinda like in the preseason how coaches will tell each other that they're going for the 2 point conversion to get some in-game practice for the real thing.

8
aatencio91Broncos•

I'm not over it. I thought it was disrespectful as fuck. Von overreacted for sure, but I still thought it was a dick move. The Broncos were already getting absolutely destroyed; no reason to spit in their faces.

-15
ThePaddingtonBear•

New England just can't win when it comes to this shit.

Patriots continue to play football when up a bunch? How disrespectful. Patriots concede their possession when up a bunch? How disrespectful. Patriots do nothing but run the ball when up a bunch? Fuck it, let's just pretend like they kept throwing and get upset anyways (see 2007).

24

3
nitram9Patriots•

Only slightly. We do have some history together but nothing serious. You never know though, this could just be the start or this could be the it and end all of it. Maybe there's a big Osweiler/Garappolo rivalry coming our way?

7
aatencio91Broncos•

I'd be down with that.

Most Broncos fans seem to hate the Pats, but the rivalry is very one-sided, which makes me sad, because (like everyone in this thread has said) Denver is the only team that doesn't have a losing record against Brady, and historically the Broncos beat the Patriots a lot.

3
AvoidingIowaBroncos•

Most awkward sounding rivalry ever.

1
lordmadoneAFC•

A small rivalry before Manning's arrival. The Broncos were one of the only teams to have a winning Record against the Brady led Pats I believe so there is that.

5

Extension of Manning. I've heard that Bronco fans have had some animosity towards the Pats for years, but I think it was mostly one-sided.

Brady does have a shitty record against the Broncos, prior to Manning especially, so that might be worth analyzing.

5
ScipioAfricanvsBroncos•

If anything, Pats fans should have had animosity towards us.

6

Even still I don't think there's any rivalry there past QB's

1
thejergBroncos•

We played the Patriots almost every year since 97... The league sure seemed to think there was something there.

7
[deleted]•

I've been a Pats fan since 98 and I can say I've never really held anything against Denver.. It's an annoying team to lose to but no different than any other loss

A loss to the Jets or recently the Ravens was a lot worse

2
key_lime_piePatriots•

Team schedules are formula-based and the league does not pick the individual match-ups.

2
[deleted]•

Live in Colorado, can confirm that 99.6% of Broncos fans have an irrational hatred of the Patriots, but never any animosity towards the Colts who beat them like 3 times in the playoffs.

2
yamaha2k11Broncos•

I hope years from now, we'll be talking about whether the Patriots-Broncos rivalry is a legit rivalry, or just an extension of the Osweiler-Mallett rivalry.

4
xFarceSteelers•

No Garoppolo?

1
Ninja_MisslePatriots•

It was already a smoldering rivalry but Brady-Manning poured gas on the embers. I grew up in Mass and live in Denver now. The older folk remember.

3
kckolbeTexans•

I think there are two rivalries. One is Brady/Manning, a rivalry between two all-time great QBs. The other is just a competition between the two most powerful AFC teams. The second one is temporary and will be forgotten within five years.

2
textbooksforrentNFL•

There are many other elements to it, but none were as substantial. Yeah, Jake the Snake gave Brady his first playoff loss. The Broncos disrupted a pretty solid 2005 Patriot playoff run. The Patriots wrecked the Tebow Broncos in the playoffs. Josh McDaniels was there a couple years.

But mostly, it's a Brady-Manning thing. The fact that the fan bases don't like each other isn't really relevant when you're talking about popular/successful teams that already receive a good bit of ire.

1
TheungryPatriots•

I don't understand why the two are mutually exclusive.

1
AdaAstraBroncos•

Just a Brady/Manning extension. Anyone who thinks the Broncos/Patriots is a rivalry hasn't watched past 5 years ago.

1
ShutEmDown24Patriots•

I've never held anything against the Broncos, personally.

The Elway years were rough, but that sort of dislike was no different than what most others feel towards Brady. Not really hate so much as envy.

They're just another conference opponent as far as I'm concerned. MY hatred is reserved for the Jets/Dolphins/Bills/Colts.

Everyone else is just a mild dislike.

1
chostingsPatriots•

I never even really hated the Colts, and I definitely don't hate the Broncos. It's 2 amazing QB's that keep seeing each other in the playoffs that causes the rivalry. I really hate the Jets, and it has nothing to do with their amazing quarterback.

1
ChuddzPetersonRams•

Both? The Colts-Pats rivalry was definately more entertaining due to Manning/Brady as they were and continue to be the best qbs in the land (#obligatoryarodgeandbreesaretheretoodoh). They were also two of the best teams in the AFC due to their superior qb play so naturally their games were more intense due to what was usually at stake. That applies equally to the pats/broncos
