"Daily" F2L Discussion - Case 8

Case 8

Setup: R2 U2 F R2 F' U2 R2

Most important solution: y' U R' U2 R U2 R' U R

Angles: Easy from FL + BR. Harder from FR + BL.

Mirror: Case 7

Discussion of Case 8:

This is the mirror of case 7. It's best solved from the FL and BR, and from these angles, the solution is completely intuitive. Start with the empty slot in the FR. The first move (y') moves the empty slot to the BR, as this case can be handled more easily from this angle. Next, you simply hide the corner (U R'), move the edge 180 degrees (U2), unhide the corner (R) to form the pair in the top layer, and then insert the pair into the back (U2 R' U R).

Notice that, in doing y' U R' U2 R, you've reduced this case to case 2. From here, there are other ways to insert the pair, depending on your personal preference and edge orientation (EO). I've listed one alternative from the BR and two alternatives from the FL.

Note that this is the sister case of case 6, as they only differ in one minor way:

Case 6 (BR): U R' U' R U2 R' U R

Case 8 (BR): U R' U2 R U2 R' U R

The similarity of the solutions comes about because of the nature of the two cases. Both are solved by hiding the corner and moving the edge into place so that a pair is formed. The difference is that, in case 6, you're moving the edge 90 degrees (U'). In Case 8, you're moving the edge 180 degrees (U2).

From the other two angles (FR and BL), it's best to do a single cube rotation (y or y') and proceed with FL/BR algorithms. Alternatively, you can utilize an adjacent empty slot to hide the corner and form the pair. In these cases, you'll be left with Case 2 from an "unnatural" angle, which will require a fancy insertion. As a second alternative, you can just learn one of the less intuitive algorithms that I've included.
