Friday Spotlight: Dirtybritch
We're gonna have some good ol' Canadian fun this week! Today's featured runner is no stranger to the community we've got here. One of my favorite people to chat with, she's yet another frequent user who isn't hesitant on commenting and is always around to offer good sound advice. She's a fellow ultra buff and has big goals for the future. Get your calculators out or pull up a units conversion page because we've got ourselves a metric numbers gal. Really excited to present to you all - u/dirtybritch in all her Maple leaf glory!
Let's roll!
###The Runner:
First Name?
Brittney
Age?
27
Where are you from?
Sparwood, BC
Occupation?
I take care of Vendor Managed Inventory on industrial sites for a warehouse/supply company.
###Running Q&A's:
What are your PR’s?
5k (unofficial): 27:43
10k (unofficial): 1:00:43
21.1k (official): 2:18:12
That 10k PR is so damn close to sub 60 I nearly cried when I stopped the clock haha! I was training a lot faster then than I am now too though.
What is your distance PR?
32.2km! (20 miles) By the time this is posted I should have two of them under my belt!
How long have you been running?
I've been running off and on since 2008. I was a fair weather runner for a while, just running 5k here and there in the spring and summer time. Mainly for fitness reasons. In 2013 I decided I wanted to run a half marathon so I started taking it seriously and ran my first race (Fernie half marathon) in 2014.
Tell us why you began running?
I started running after I broke up with the biological father of son of a dirtybritch. I wanted to lose all the weight I had put on during pregnancy/sitting around on my ass and I managed to drop 50lbs.
Most memorable running moment?
Most memorable running moment has to be crossing the finish line at my first race ever. Mr. Dirtybritch was there waiting for me and even though I was super slow it was the best feeling ever.
Do you have a running mantra?
My running mantra is "Keep going, bitch."
Simple and to the point hahaha
What’s your highest recorded weekly mileage?
Highest weekly mileage is 65.2 km (40.5 miles) although this week I'm aiming to get to 70km (43.5 miles).
What time of day do you prefer to run?
I prefer to run in the evenings after work during the week, around 7pm. But on the weekends I like to get out as early as possible to get it done. 6-7 am works great for me.
Any big races coming up?
I've got Sinister 7 100 mile ultra on July 9th. I'm running Leg 5 as part of a relay team (#teamjugsnthugs). And then I've got Blackspur Ultra 54km August 20th which will be my first Ultra/longest run ever. After that I've got Fernie Oktoberfest half marathon October 2 where I'm hoping to go sub 2:15.
What are your short-term running goals?
Not die at Sinister or Blackspur. Sub 2:15 half, sub 60 10k
What are your long-term running goals?
Run the Squamish 50miler, then the 50/50 and then ultimately run the Fat Dog 120 and Sinister 7 100 mile solo. Dream big, right?
What’s one piece of running advice you’d give to the younger version of yourself?
I would tell younger me that no one cares how you look while you're out running and if they do then fuck em. And no one cares how slow you are but you, so stop worrying so much and just enjoy running.
What is something you need to work on to become a better runner?
Diet. Definitely diet. Fml
What is your current shoe choice?
I'm currently running in Saucony Stratos Tr's and Hoka one one Kailua Trails. I need to pick up another pair of Kinvaras too before I start road running again in the fall.
What’s your comfy pace?
Comfy pace on roads is about 6:30/km ( around 10:30 per mile) and comfy trail pace is about 8:30/km (around 13:40 per mile I think) as I usually run pretty hilly stuff. Any one feel free to call me out on my conversions lol
Trail? Road? Track? Or Treadmill?
Definitely trail!! Muddy trail, technical trail, steep trail, yes please! Although I don't mind a good quick road run here and there and up here in the Great White North the treadmill can be a handy tool.
What is your ideal running weather?
Ideal running weather is about 10-12 degrees celcius and overcast with a bit of rain. Although I've been known to be seen smiling while running in blizzards and torrential downpours. I think the worse the weather the more accomplished I feel afterwards haha
Do you have any social media accounts you’d like to share? [Facebook, Strava, Twitter]
###Just For Fun:
What’s your spirit animal?
My spirit animal is totally the graceful and majestic moose! I always seem to see one right before I embark on any big hiking adventure and I've come to think of them as being good luck. Plus, I'm about as coordinated as a moose haha
What hobbies and interests do you have besides running?
I like to write and love to read. I'm a total book nerd. I have gotten into fly fishing the past couple of years and could easily spend a whole day on the river. Hiking is another big interest for me and where I live there's no lack of interesting and challenging hikes near by.
Do you have any hidden talents?
I seem to have an innate ability to get just one foot completely soaked or mud caked while out running/hiking while the other remains completely dry.
Biggest pet peeve?
Biggest pet peeve is littering. Seriously I hate it. I leave garbage in my car until I can get home to throw it away. I feel like if I can run for four hours carrying my clif bar wrappers then some one driving down the road can hold on to their godamn garbage till they get to a garbage can. Ugh.
Favorite Quote or Poem?
This one, as corny as it is.
What is your biggest character flaw?
I tend to greatly overthink things, building things up and over analyzing situations in my head till it drives me nuts. I've been working on that but it's a hard one to get over. It gives me lots of anxiety cuz I'm always imagining the worst possible situation.
What songs have you been listening to recently?
Ahhhh I could go on about music forever. I'm the kind of person that listens to just about every kind of music possible from classic rock to folk punk to EDM. As long as it makes me feel something I'll find a place for it. So what I'll do is give you guys a few songs from my 'most listened to' list.
Also, as much dislike as I've seen the Ginger Runner get around here his albums kick ass to run to. Straight instrumentals that keep you going. I've really been getting into instrumental music for running.
What are some of your favorite non-running subreddits?
r/trailrunning (obviously), r/hiking (so good!), r/nosleep (so spooky) and r/frontpagedicks (hilarious but inactive... I wish it was active still)
###One Last Question:
What is the origin of your username?
So, a friend of mine used to work at the same company as me and he gave me the nickname. It started out as "Brittney Bitch" when the Britney Spears song was popular. Then it morphed into DirtyBritt, when that Black Eyed Peas song was popular. From there it just evolved into Dirtybritch (Britt plus bitch equals britch) lol. So when I got a Reddit account I figured that would be a great user name. Better than the work nickname I've got from the retired dude that used to work part time for us.
I was excited to find out that I'd get to spotlight Dirtybritch this week. She's always very responsive and active in this community and I give her props for doing what she does. I'm really looking forward to one day making my way up to her area and putting in some climbs with her if the opportunity ever arises. She seems like a pretty cool person to run with. We also share one of the same character flaws - overthinking things. It's an exhausting process that's for sure. Plus how could I disagree with her goals for running Squamish, Fat Dog, and Sinister 7? Amazing races right there! Such a great Spotlight this week.
#Please tag u/Dirtybritch's username when asking her a question in this thread!
If you don't the running Gods will give you incurable shin splints for the rest of your life and you'll die a sad lonely wanna-be hobbyjogger.
If I see that you've failed to tag her after asking her a question, I'll try my best to respond to your question by tagging her myself. So be aware. Tagging her username alerts her that her attention is needed. This way, she doesn't have to sift through all of the comments one by one, which can be a rather daunting task when there is a lot of traffic to the thread. Please don't forget that all of our Friday Spotlight athletes may need time to respond to your comments and questions so give them some time to reply.
