“So what happens now?” Isabella had been staring out of the window for the past hour, as had William. Not a single word had been spoken since the monster had killed everyone else. The night was still young making it difficult for Daniel to see where he was going, he didn’t even know where he was going. Their satnav wasn’t working and the phones wouldn’t work either, nobody had a clue how to get out of the forest and everyone silently hoped that the thing wasn’t following them.
“We keep going, we find more people and we tell them what happened. They’ll believe us when they see the blood.” Daniel gestured to the window that Sophia had been dragged out of, her skin and blood still remained clinging to the bits of jagged glass.
“We have to tell the police, we have to warn people… that thing it was… unkillable,” William spoke up to everyone’s surprise, nobody would blame him if he kept to himself. He had a very sad look to his eyes but he was trying to stay optimistic “If we can just find someone, anyone. They can tell us where we are.”
“None of our phones are working, I was talking to my mum when the call cut out and it still won’t work. Even the internet won’t work, nothing works” Daniel seemed less and less enthusiastic the more time had passed, it felt like this wasn’t happening to just them.
“What is going on?” Asked Isabella who looked worried out of her mind and also distraught from the past events “Why won’t the phones work? Is this what happened to all those other countries who’s internet cut out before us? All their communications stopped too, who’s to say it hasn’t happened all over Canada?”
“We don’t KNOW what has happened, just what has happened to us. We should find somewhere to stay the night, I don’t think whoever’s place it is will mind” William went back to his sulking position, the dimly lit road ahead shrouding his face in darkness like a mirror of his mind.
They kept driving, it didn’t take them long to find a place to stay. It was a wood cabin in the middle of the woods, most likely a holiday home, Daniel theorized. They would just stay the night then they would leave as if they were never there. They pulled the jeep up outside the front door and made their way inside, the door was unlocked and there didn’t seem to be any kind of security for the place. Nobody would expect intruders this far out in the woods. The living room was quite homely, it had a big fireplace with a finely crafted mantelpiece placed on top. What really stood out was the stag head above the mantelpiece, it must have been one big stag for its head to be that big thought Daniel as he stared at it in awe. “Get the fire going,” Will said to Daniel “We need to warm up so we don’t freeze to death, it’s quite cold this high up.” Daniel proceeded to put coal and wood into the fire, luckily they had all the provisions for starting a fire right next to the fireplace and soon they had a roaring fire crackling in the background.
“What’s this?” Isabella asked the room with her eyes on a metal box in the corner, it had been obscured by the front door and she had only just noticed it. “It seems to have a number pad on it, whatever’s in there it must be worth something.” William walked up to it and inspected it.
“It’s guns.” He said looking at it hungrily.
“How could you know that?” Asked Daniel looking at him curiously.
“I recognize it, I signed up for the army once but I pulled out as soon as I realized it wasn’t the right fit for me, they had these gun crates all over the show.” He looked at the number pad more intently now “There’s no way you can break into one of these, but maybe with enough pressure we can try.” He padded a random set of numbers into the pad but none of them worked, he tried again but the screen told him he had been locked out for 30 minutes. “Look for anything heavy, like a weight or something.”
They explored the house, there didn’t seem too much of anything interesting in this place. Just provisions for someone who intended to stay here for a number of days if they so wished. “Holy shit.” Isabella could be heard cursing from the bathroom. Daniel hurried over worried she might have had a run in with that thing again.
“What? What is it?” He asked her.
“Look at this.” She smiled as she told him to look around the bathroom, it was an open shower bathroom with a huge two panel window that looked directly out to the forest. There was a light switch on the side which she flicked on and off before Daniel stopped her telling her they didn’t want that thing finding them. “It’s ok, I doubt it followed us here. We went quite far.”
“What do you think that thing was?” Daniel asked sitting down on the toilet.
“I don’t know.” Isabella shrugged. “All I know is that all my friends except for Will are dead, and we could be next.” She sat down in front of a wooden slatted cupboard where the boiler most likely was.
“I’m sorry,” Daniel responded swinging his feet back and forth as a nervous tick “It’s just… It didn’t look like anything from earth, and the lake boiling… do you think that had anything to do with it?”
“I don’t think it is from earth.” Isabella said, Daniel seemed shocked by this response and she saw that. “Think about it, it doesn’t look like it would belong anywhere on this planet. Unless it’s come from the depths of the ocean or something, but then it spoke to us, it spoke in English! How is that even possible? You’d think someone would have seen something?”
“Yeah… and if they did they’re probably dead too.” Daniel looked up to her, so much had happened since they had got together he wasn’t even sure they were a thing anymore. In light of everything he wouldn’t be surprised if they weren’t, but it was the best thing to happen to him since ever, and then of course this had to happen.
“Hey listen,” Isabella looked up to Daniel who was staring at her deeply. “Are we still… you know? Are we still an item?” Isabella suddenly looked sympathetic and opened to her mouth to speak when suddenly there was a loud banging noise. They both shot out of their sitting and ran the source of the noise. It was William swinging a giant sledgehammer at the gun case, he had a different look in his eyes that Daniel had never seen.
“I thought I told you two to find something we could break this open with?!” He looked infuriated.
“Sorry dude, we were just…” Daniel tried to speak but William marched up to him and stuck his face in his, it was covered in sweat.
“Just what?! You were just what Daniel?!”
“I… I er…”
“That THING is still out there and it’s hunting us down! Did you see how desperate it was to get us? Did you even hear what it said? It wants to eat us, and I have a feeling that whatever it is, it won’t stop until it does! Now stop fucking around and help me open this.” Daniel was in shock, he couldn’t believe it. William had never spoken to him like that before, he was always the nicest out of the lot except for Isabella.
“Sorry man, I know Sophia’s death was hard on you but just calm down ok?”
“Calm down?! Did you see what happened to her?! She was dragged through a window and I just sat there with this stupid look on my face as she screamed for help and I did nothing! NOTHING! And don’t EVER mention her name again, ok?” Williams face was bright red with rage, nothing anybody said could calm him down.
“William!” Isabella shouted. “Don’t talk to him like that he’s done nothing wrong! Yes we’re all upset over her death, but other people died too! I’ve lost people as well you’re not the only one who’s having to suffer. There is no excuse for talking to Daniel like that.” She looked at him with a stern face.
“Whatever,” He said casually. “Just stay out of my way, you’re both useless anyway.” He went back to swinging his sledgehammer trying to break open the weapon case, but it didn’t seem to be budging. He screamed in anger and marched down the hallway and around the corner. Slamming a bedroom door behind him.
“Jesus.” Daniel said, visibly shaken.
“He just needs time, we all do.” Isabella said trying to comfort him.
“Yeah,” Daniel said without much enthusiasm. “I know.” He too walked off to a different bedroom, Isabella followed. He was sat on the bed staring at the wall and didn’t even acknowledge she had followed him. She sat next to him and put her arm around his shoulder.
“What I was going to say to you Daniel,” He looked at her. “Was that yes, we are still an item. I’ve liked you since the day I met you, even if we didn’t say a single word to each other.” She smiled a laugh a little. He turned to her and put her hands in his, looking more sincere.
“Listen, I’ve been horrible to you recently.” She looked at him with confusion. “I haven’t really considered the fact that you lost all your friends just now, all I was worried about was losing you and I didn’t so I was happy. I haven’t asked you how you’re feeling or if you need any help, I spent all this time feeling sorry for myself for having to go through all that but so did you. They were your friends more than they were ever my friends and that must be horrible for you, so I just wanted to say I’m sorry. I’m here for you.” He gripped her hands more tightly and she smiled.
“Oh Daniel you don’t need to be sorry, we all saw what happened back there. Anybody can be forgiven for reacting in their own way to that.”
“Yeah, you’re right.” he said back to her, they laid on the bed and held hands. Thinking about how William must be taking all of this. They must have fallen asleep on the bed for a few hours when they heard the front door opening because it was suddenly daylight outside. “Who’s that?” Daniel whispered to Isabella.
“I don’t know, Will maybe?” she asked just as he walked through their door quietly.
“Someone’s here.” He spoke in hushed tones too, they heard someone’s voice followed by beeping noises. “Shit, I think it’s the owners and they know we’re here.” They all got up and walked quietly to the bedroom door when they heard a man’s voice.
“Come out!” They all looked at each other and gestured to go out. They walked around the corner and saw a man holding up a shotgun to their heads.
“Shit!” Daniel shouted before running back around the corner.
“Tell your friend to get his ass back here or I’ll blow a hole in your fucking head.” The man aimed the gun higher up at Will’s head.
“Daniel, come on.” Will said irritated that Daniel was being a wimp. Isabella had rolled her eyes.
“I’m coming I’m coming.” He came back around the corner with his head hung low and his hands in the air.
“Now,” The man with the shotgun said, “Who the fuck are you?”
My illness seems to have almost gone now yay :) Hopefully will be able to get these out a bit quicker now.
