The Worst Seasons in the Past 25 Years Part 20: Dartmouth
Welcome to the Worst Season in the Past 25 Years, a series in which r/CollegeHockey reviews the worst season for all 60 Division I teams over the summer to alleviate the crushing boredom known as the off-season and take a horrific tour down memory lane.
If you are interested in writing an entry for your team, please let me know via PM. I’ll be posting entries on weekdays at approximately at 6 pm Eastern time and will be going in alphabetical order. If an entry is not posted at that time, assume that “real life” has gotten in the way and that I am not able to post. If I am aware in advance that I will not post at 6 pm on a particular day, I will announce it in prior posts as a heads up.
And now.../r/CollegeHockey presents the Dartmouth Indians Keggy the Kegs Big Green! Dartmouth have a program whose roots can be traced to the early 20th century. Early on in the NCAA era, they participated in the tournament. They would also make a couple of appearances in the late 1970s. Other than that, Dartmouth was never really considered to be a threat to the ECAC elite.
However, the worst season in the past 25 years for the Big Green is…
1993-94 Record: 5-1-21 (W-D-L); ECAC: 4-1-17 (W-D-L; 12th/12th)
Wins: @Merrimack, Vermont, Yale, Brown, St. Lawrence
Tie: @Clarkson
Losses: Cornell, Colgate, @Vermont, @Boston College, Northeastern, New Hampshire*, @Vermont*, Princeton, @Brown, @Harvard, @St. Lawrence, Union, RPI, @Colgate, @Cornell, @RPI, @Union, Harvard, Clarkson, @Yale, @Brown
*Sheraton/USAir Classic at Gutterson Fieldhouse
Biggest Beatdown: Boston College 9 - Dartmouth 2
Head Coach: Roger Demment
In his third season as head coach for the Big Green, Demment saw his team’s wins get slashed in half from the previous season (11 to 5). Scott Fraser had the most goals (17) and Dion Del Monte had the most assists (18). Goalkeeping stats were unavailable.
The Big Green got their season underway away to Merrimack, a 5-4 win. Home games against Cornell and Colgate ended in losses. A quick home and home series with Vermont was split. In Thompson Arena, the Big Green thumped the Catamounts 11-4. Two games against Boston teams (BC and Northeastern) ended in defeat.
December was uneventful, only participating in a tournament hosted by Vermont and losing both games. January started with home games against Princeton (a loss) and Yale (a win). Four away games followed; only one tie was obtained, against Clarkson. The month ended with home losses to Union and RPI.
February kicked off with heavy losses away to Colgate and Cornell, with losses away to RPI and Union the following weekend. A loss to Harvard preceded two home wins against Brown and St. Lawrence; a loss to Clarkson happened the following night. The season ended with losses away to Yale and Princeton.
Demment was coach for three more seasons, ultimately failing to reach that high of 11 wins from the 1992-1993 season. In 1997, he was fired and replaced by current head coach Bob Gaudet. Under Gaudet, the Big Green would win the ECAC regular season title in the 2005-06 season. However, their seasonal form appears to wobble a bit and an off season is usually after a decent season. As it stands, Dartmouth are seen as one of the “easier” teams in the ECAC.
For Week 5 of this series, we will look at the worst seasons in recent memory for the following school: Denver, Ferris State, Harvard and Holy Cross. Once again, if you are interested in doing the entry for your favorite school, shoot me a PM. Your school, name, and date will be added at the end of each post to serve as a reminder. So far, the following people have inquired about a spot:
