How to counter Nova Warp?

I’m on Xbox, so Nova Warp is a giant part of my experience in pvp. They seem to be invincible, by the time I see them or hear them they’ve already got to the second charged radius and I can’t escape vertically or horizontally.

I play Titan mostly, and use pulses, combo with ikelos sg, fighting lion, or retold tale. Sometimes bow if I’m just messing around

EDIT: I don’t know what’s up with all the downvotes, I’m just trying to get some advice and strats on how to deal with a super

Run. Or suppression grenades.

This, or team shot or counter super.

Regarding the latter suggestion: If you're using Thundercrash, make sure to be crafty with it. I had a Nova Warp snipe me out of my ult before it hit. Ate my ult, Nova Warp kept going. FeelsBadMan.

Unless you’re in an organized team that can team shot it down, your best bet is just to run away. They will probably catch you, and you’ll probably still die, but you can at least force them to use more super energy and pull them away from your team. The difference between a nova warp getting 6 kills and a nova warp getting 2 kills is how many of the opposing team decided to just run away.

Yeah I hope this answer isn’t the only way to beat this, having a super without a solid way to counter is pretty lame

Blade Barrage? Sentinel? Supers are hard to counter, that's their point.

DrMetasinOP•

Roaming supers should be easier to counter

LuciferTho•

they die in seconds or less to a coordinated/competent team of 2 or 3 people. you aren't supposed to be able to 1v1 a super consistently. if that's your desire, use Telesto (usually 2 bursts a super for me if I can land all the shots) or snipe better. high impact takes most of a supers health off.

ParriedStump•

Unfortunately it is at the moment. The new void subclass is all around amazing and there aren’t many options to counter.

Russian05•

This is the best way and even still may not work. Last night in comp, survival, I pop my super at the beginning of a round and got all 4 with one chest bump. I enjoyed it but I doubt the other team did.

CakeSlapping•

Sentinel Titan suppressor grenades can shut down any roaming super.

When well placed, yes, although Nova Warp blink can make this very tricky. If they see the nade, they have great chances of blinking past, so you might get better luck if you manage to break LOS and bait them into pushing

2
Bob-omb_Buddy•

Tractor Cannon is a good counter to it. Just boop them away.

8
DrMetasinOP•

Yeah you’d have to time that pretty perfectly. I’ve never really used the TC in pvp, so I’d have to get used to the range and the timing of it

8
_absentia•

There is no "timing," to it. It's probably the easiest shotgun to use ever.

9
DrMetasinOP•

I mean, chances are that they’d already have they’re blast charged up, so you’d have to time when to hit them or your dead

7
AdrianChm•

Even if you charge while blinking, there's still some charge time left before you can unleash hell (you cannot charge then blink). That's a good window of opportunity.

1
Bob-omb_Buddy•

Yeah if I see a fissionlock I switch to it and really only take heavy when supers are up. But tbh I've never had to be precise with it. Be careful when they try to juke you though!

1
ThorsonWong•

If they get too close or have a fully charged blast, TCing them can actually end up killing you, since the blast goes off as they get ripped out of their super.

2
Spiderjay2•

A worthy sacrifice

1
ThorsonWong•

B-but they'd still be alive, iirc, just weak.

1
Spiderjay2•

To give your life so that other may live is to answer the highest calling. The iron lords answer it willingly.

Arsys_•

TC is such a good counter, you don't even need to the bait the shot. they will come to you and the range of TC will shut them down.

shaksta4•

Sentinel is a strong counter to it. If you use your shield the nova warp doesnt do any damage. As soon as they've used their big explosion, start whacking them. Before they explode again put your shield back up. Repeat. Also supressor nades. Drop one at your feet if you feel like you're gonna die anyways. Otherwise just work on throwing those around.

7
AetherMcLoud•

Can you block Nova warp explosions with all shields? You certainly can't kill them they can tank 2 R2 hits from Sentinel super.

1
shaksta4•

I'm pretty sure all shields should work, except when you have the smaller shield on its easier for the warlock to get behind you and explode (which will kill you). If you're playing against a half decent player then they won't let you get behind and explode. Also the small explosions don't deal enough damage, so it has to be the big explosion.

I try to get their attention, kite away from the team, then leap off an edge to a "down" as opposed to giving them a kill.

RogueThings•

Counter super, stall by running and die inevitably, teamshot, or alt f4. Heavy ammo can also work on occasion, but the other options tend to be more consistent. I’d recommend either wardcliff coil or tractor cannon for shutting down a NW scrublord.

PolkadotPiranha•

(On PC, so some differences) I've been using Lion Rampants a lot lately, and I've had decent success relocating to a place with more space to spray them down. As they get closer you'll need to continously backpedal. Switch to/off special ammo as they get to certain ranges, and in between a big explosion pop, get in there and finish them off, if enough damage has bee chipped off.

Obviously don't fight them in a place with too much cover, as they damage through walls, and preferably no team mate in between you, that they can heal off.

Easiest things to use to counter it are:

  • Any Shutdown super (Blade Barrage, Thundercrash, Commander Shield blocking applies void detonators that will kill them, Nova Bomb and Chaos Reach). If you have Bubble activate that, Warp cannot destroy bubble. I would say Tether too but I have heard mixed reports on its effectiveness

  • Team shooting them.

  • Heavy

  • Suppressor grenades

Thats most likely the only ways you can counter a good Nova Warp user. There are other options however:

  • Lunas Howl/Not Forgotten can counter them if you reliably proc Magnificent Howl.

  • High Impact Sniper headshots will hit for a significant amount of damage, not enough to kill them but enough for a teammate to mop up or for you to swap to another weapon to finish.

  • Kiting with Lion Rampants or Top Tree Dawnblade can work depending on your aim and accuracy in the air. However that is niche and in the higher levels of comp good Voidlocks won't take the bait.

It depends on your environment. In Quickplay if you want to experiment with ways to counter it give them a try (personally I want to try Telesto a bit more as a Nova Warp counter). But in the high levels of comp if you do not have a shutdown super or heavy I would run or try to coordinate shot angles to your team. Nova Warp has too much armour right now to be reliably countered with a Guardians neutral game and loadout at the moment

Nova bomb is too slow to counter any supers in this game. Needs an animation speed buff.

nsharp01•

I get crushed almost every time I use my nova warp; I too play on Xbox. I’d honestly say I get shut down a ton by blade barrage/coils and I’ve even been foiled on more than one occasion by multiple shotgun users. Maybe I just don’t know how to use it well? But I’d say on average for every 3 times I use it I get shut down. That or run, that’s what I do.

2
dmac1189•

If you aren't using blink as the jump for this class you really should, it allows you to gap close without eating super energy. It takes a lot to get used to and takes away some neutral game but I think for this class you should be playing to the super so blink is to the best option. Also don't hold a charge for too long, and don't try to chase while charged up cuz you move slower. Don't pop it in the open either, you'll get focused down. But blink for me makes this super almost unkillable.

2
nsharp01•

I used to use blink but lately I have switched to burst glide as it seems to be more of a "normal" style of play. I still like blink I just switched over at the behest of some other folks who had made the recommendation. Thank you for the advice though. I'll give it a run and see which one I like better.

Team shotting works. If you’re a hunter with stompies you have a good chance to just hop away, if they still get you then you’ve basically wasted their super getting them to chase you, while diverting their attention from your team.

1
Shadow0728•

You counter it the way you counter any super. Run, use a shutdown super like blade barrage, or team shoot it down.

1
DrMetasinOP•

Obviously you can use a super to kill them. I’m wondering about different ways

1
temazavrik•

run :D

1
xastey_•

Run you may die but if they are stupid they will waste their supper chasing just you.. take one for the team.

That or team shooting works really well

1
PreemoJerry•

Just run. Turn around and telesto his ass and keep running. It’ll work eventually

1
DigitalBathx•

Wardcliff or Popping your striker super way up in the air so the extra damage from being aerial takes them out.

The second bit is a lot tougher to pull off especially if they’re pre charged and know what you’re trying to do..been thinking maybe thundercrash too? 🤔

1
BoundaryRock•

It’s like an invader in Gambit, once you see in the feed it has been popped you are going to need to collapse and try to kill it. I have 10 Mobility + Stompeez and unless I can go through hallways and loose them I am toast, cannot get away.

1
StarlightSpade•

Lunas Howl or a good sniper will do it pretty well, if you’re far enough away when they pop it, otherwise tether your own feet, attempt to throw a suppressor at their speedy ass or run away and prey to god he falls off the map.
