God I miss Austin on GB. I think Waypoint is great and I wouldn't want to lose it, but I have the unreasonable expectation for him to also work at GB.

Dan - I don't actually believe that anyone likes beer. I think everyone pretends to.
Dan just over a minute later - I actually like that a lot. I do like Belgian whites. I really enjoy this.

Dan was really like a child in splunky... Vinny seemed legit frustrated (especially after the run incident as well)

It's why Dan tends to be my least favorite GB member. When he turns up the "heel" attitude it's just like Really? Really? That's what your doing?

The ‘new’ Dan thing is nonsense. Give him a chance to be overcompetitive or a troll, he’ll leap on it and doesn’t care if he takes it too far.

I believe that he's grown and changed a lot, but I think deriving pleasure out of other people's misfortune or discomfort is a deeply fundamental part of his personality and his sense of humour. When he talked on Die Another Friday about the dire forfeits he and his siblings would set up during competitive family activities, it's clear that he grew up that way and it's a fundamental part of who he is.

I mean no one explained at all how to play the game and so he ended up dying instantly. He figured out he could do something as the ghost and that’s the only fun he was able to have with the game. I don’t blame him.

Seriously, I don't put this one on Dan at all. They really just hung him out to dry.
They didn't even explain the basic concept of the game, let alone mechanics
Had they even tried co-op Spelunky before?

They said they didn't. It sounded like only Vinny and Alex ever played the game for any amount of time. Dan said at the start he played it and Binding of Isaac long before he figured out what rogue-likes are meant to be and so he found both confusing that he was just dying a lot and gave up.
Spelunky doesn't even have that difficult a control scheme, it would've taken Vinny or Alex about a minute to explain the game enough for people to know that you shouldn't just run around like it's Mario.

Being a “professional gamesman” does not mean he has the ability to figure out the controls to a game he hasn’t played within minutes before he Perma-dies. Vinny and Alex have a lot of experience with the game and even they had to look the controls up

It doesn't even seem to be on "Latest", I legit thought they only did a "This is the Run" stream for Friday until I saw this post.
It's not even the top video under "Playdate" so I'm guessing the video wasn't posted quite right. Might be because of the new automation of posting live-streamed videos.

Why did they think playing Spelunky without explaining literally any part of how to play would be a good idea?

Watching Dan be a dick in Spelunky is not good entertainment.
If they had quarter hour and DVR ratings they'd see me fast forward through that section.
Yeah I closed the stream and went back to YouTube before they finished Spelunky.
It's gotten to the point that any co-op game with Dan has become almost unwatchable. I like Dan and generally think he's funny, but this heel bit needs to stop.
Man, I've gotta agree. It was funny the first couple times and after that is just annoying to watch.
You could kinda tell even Vinny was starting to get genuinely annoyed!
What else was he expecting?
He didn't even explain the most basic concepts of the game he brought for the stream, which also just happened to be one of the most notoriously hard games in years.
I was frustrated that they didn't get some basic setup too. Co-op Spelunky can be a hectic nightmare even if the players all know what they're doing!
I agree with the others that thought that Dan's bit of being a dick went from funny to annoying. I adore Spelunky and was so stoked to see them play it, but Dan ended up making the whole thing about him, rather than them playing it together.
There goes my dream of This Is the Run: Spelunky. Unless Dan legitimately gets into the game on his own and gains some respect for the greatest game ever created.
I've been trying to get into Spelunky lately as I work through my backlog and it's been a real struggle. Maybe it's because I've been playing Dead Cells at the same time which seems more my style but I found myself feeling so deflated after losing however hours into Spelunky and not feeling I've been making any sort of progress or improvement. Not gonna give up just yet though.
Spelunky is more "true" to the rogue experience. You're not getting points or new features unlocked as you go through the levels and die and start over. If you're more into games like Dead Cells or Rogue Legacy where stuff is being unlocked for future runs I can see Spelunky feeling a bit old by comparison. It's going to be interesting to see the wider reaction to Spelunky 2 when it comes out.
It just feels more deflating when I have a bad run, and it's very very hard for me at least right now (probably around 200 runs) to get any sort of feeling that I can learn from my mistakes. It at least feels like there's more bullshit that happens that's outside of my control and it gets very frustrating.
Again super in the Dead Cells mindset these days, but I think I'd prefer at least some gold carrying over (at an amount that increases over time as you do better) so that if you get very far you have a decent chance at the next one.
Right now it feels like, "grind gold in 1-2 and 1-3, and hope you get a jetpack/shotgun ASAP after" and any run that doesn't have that is doomed once you get to the jungle.
I enjoyed it.
