Best songs of the 00s' ?

Off the top of my head I can't think of many, enlighten me.

Edit: hm guess I'll need a time machine to see great music in the making, 70s' here I come, anyone want to join me? (totally not a suicide cult, but I will need your money and belongings so you can blend in)

EDIT2: yeah... seeing mostly pop music here, not my cup of tea. Only a couple mentioned that I like.

                            Sincerely yours... the music nazi

EDIT3: hey, I forgot about SOAD, you better be fucking grateful 00s', you've been redeemed... partially.

EDIT4: While there may be a few songs to me that were good, and looking at the songs posted, this last decade kind of sucked ass music wise.

EDIT5: Here is the top 100 songs of the decade based on records. Looks like Hey ya really is the top dog of the decade. Tell me, how many of them do you like? Out of these, I only like 15 of them.

reddit, i love you, but for a community that takes ever possible opportunity to dump on 'hipsters', you sure do enjoy a lot of their music

99
BenOfTomorrow•

Hating on hipsters is a tell-tale sign of a hipster.

67
ebbomega•

"I fucking hate hipsters." - Every hipster I know

Incidentally:

"I fucking hate ravers." - Every raver I knew, 10 years ago

(Prior to that I'm sure goths and punks likely said the same thing)

15
ephemerat•

This is so true. Goths certainly did - it was a running joke that no goth would ever admit to being one. The bands did it too. For example, Fields of the Nephilim, probably as stereotypically goth a band as you could get, would instead refer to their music as spaghetti metal.

Goths also shared many other hipster characteristics: love of the arcane, esoteric or simply obscure, vain fashion-sense, practiced bored aire, sense of intellectual superiority coupled with a vague persecution complex etc. In some ways hipsters are closer to their spiritual successors than emos are (love how all the hipsters are going to take that statement).

Any punk, on the other hand, could give you a lecture on the true meaning of punk (according to them): any time, any where. Most are fairly proud to be punk.

1
ebbomega•

Yeah, punks kinda had it backwards... while everybody else says how much they hate the subculture they are obviously a part of, punks would deride the entire culture and say it wasn't really punk.

And the real funny part of it is that Hipsters came pretty directly from the punk scene (or at least, the post-punk scene of the 80's, and the emo-punk scene of the 90's... which is nothing like what they call "emo" now).

I think it's unfortunate that all new, experimental, interesting, and progressive music is labeled as "hipster" music.

It's like we have to choose between the shit we here on the radio all the time, or the shit that nobody has ever heard of. Either way, someone is going to make fun of it.

12
stayfoolish•

If a song's good, a song's good. It bugs me when people choose to like songs based on who the artist is.

8
tweedboss•

Precisely, which is why the HIPSTER music label bugs me.

1
butteryhotcopporn•

That's such a broad generalization. What experimental, interesting, progressive music do you mean?

1
tweedboss•

I am not saying that all hipster music is experimental, interesting, or progressive music, I suppose.

What I mean to say is that said music is often labeled as hipster music.

1
butteryhotcopporn•

Lay down some artists broseph

2
xylery•

Yeah, hating on hipsters is so 2009. C'mon guys, it's the new decade already!

11
megatom0•

I think there is a difference between liking hipster music and acting like a hipster, just like I like gagsta rap without being a thug.

3
butteryhotcopporn•

Pretty much, reddit is a bunch of hipsters who miss out on the PBR drinking and sexing up of hipster women.

1
junkit33•

What kills me is they're all the most popular indie songs too. i.e. the ones that are probably on 1,000,000 ipods yet people still think they are one of a select few to listen to the artist...

3

"their music"

give me a fucking break

2
etom21•

every hipster i know reads reddit religiously

1
CadavreExquisite•

Just because you like the same music as hipsters doesn't mean you are one. I consider myself an indie kid, but not a hipster, and I hate going to shows/telling people what kind of music I like sometimes because there are so many asshole hipsters that ruin it for me. I'm sure there are countless people who like the same things as you, but who are total assholes-- doesn't necessarily mean you are on the same level as them because of shared interest.

1
eugenesbluegenes•

The thing is, "Hipster Music" tends to be the most creative, inventive and exciting music out there.

-4
mustardstache•

so the music is ok but the people who make it are asshats?

1
eugenesbluegenes•

No, the people who hate on it because "hipsters" like it are asshats.

1
mustardstache•

agreed

1
poubelle•

I beg to differ. My god. Hipsters and their ilk are some of the most repressed, conformist people in the world, and don't try to tell me there weren't about a million bands that sounded just like the Arcade Fire in the first few years after their first LP came out.

1
kmac1331•

Outkast - Hey Ya

96
arito•

was anyone else very surprised when they realised that the lyrics are melancholic and depressing?

That's why the music video is 1960's style. It's a tribute to an earlier time.

1
puredemo•

1
kmac1331•

yeah i have the matt weddle version, it's a lot better, but i had to say by outkast because it was a huge song

1

One of the very very few unique and original songs released in that atrocious decade.

2
tonynojutsu•

Uhh, Bob?

2
junkit33•

If such a thing exists, then that is the "song of the decade", hands down. There are plenty I like better, but I can't think of anything that even comes close to the anthem of the 00's.

2
butteryhotcopporn•

Really? It seems like a decade that lacks an anthem, because culture got so fragmented.

2
junkit33•

Which is perfectly explained by a stylistically diverse hip-hop group creating a bubblegum pop smash hit crossover anthem.

2
butteryhotcopporn•

That song is a bitch on Guitar Hero. I couldn't wank for a week after a night trying to perfect it.

12
javabrewer•

I won a Guitar Hero tournament because of this song. Because of those pain-in-the-ass up/down strumming sections I managed to get just a couple slightly longer streaks than my opponent and so I beat him by like 300 points.

The surprise-prize: a copy of Guitar Hero 3 for the Wii. Thanks assholes for giving me a game I already mastered!

I know. Thankfully it was a charity event and the admission cost went to that. I ended up giving the box set to the 2nd place dude because he didn't have the game and only played at his friends house; that and his wife just had a baby so he probably wasn't going to have the freedom to leave home to go play games with his friends!

3
HeavyPetter•

Do I know you? I've repeated this fact to people. But maybe it's just common knowledge. Carry on.

2
junkit33•

It's common knowledge. MGMT perfectly symbolizes what the music industry was like before downloads. You'd hear a great song on the radio, go buy their entire album, and then be super disappointed when you find out it had 2 more decent tracks and a pile of crap on the disc.

5
smilingarmpits•

yeah, Kids equals to good vibe and smiles all over, but Time to pretend is just fucking huge and epic and i don't know

2
daebat•

you're right. very epic. my friend did the session drums for the electric feel demo.

2
smilingarmpits•

I like Electric feel too, it's a very cute song. Kudos to your friend, btw!

1
LeonSpinks•

Aww you guys are so cuuuuute! MGMT (Andrew and Ben, as well as Will) went to college with me and it's still surreal to see them ranked "best of the decade" or whatever instead of standing with 25 people in a dorm basement watching them bop around to their own iPod-fueled instrumental track.

They're insanely talented and deserve all the accolades they've received. Beyond shit like Kids (which they made as a joke "dance" song), The Youth, Electric Feel, and Indie Rockers (one they haven't redone) are among the most brilliant of their shit.

How's this for hipster: MGMT are the only Wesleyan band that has even an iota of talent and the rest are overhyped crapola.

1
volatilemolotov•

See this band live and it will completely change your mind about them. Yes, while the produced and recorded songs sound great, seeing them live will make you realize how talentless they are.

2

Arcade Fire - Neighborhood #1 (Tunnels)

Hide and Seek - Imogen Heap

34
Palmzlike86•

I love this song, and I really wish people would recognize that Imogen Heap was the only real talent behind that freaking crap song by Jason Derulo, but if I were to choose one of her songs as a favorite I'd have to give it to "Clear the Area".

10
autumnalcity•

"Daylight Robbery" takes a while to hit you, but when it does... damn. Find a sunset, find a convertible, and go 30% over the speed limit on any highway with a view. Play that song. Transcendence will ensue.

7
[deleted]•

Man the first couple of times that song came on in the background when I was in a bar I picked up on the Imogen Heap bit and thought they were playing Hide and Seek, got all excited for a few seconds, and then this prick comes in with his terrible rapping and ruins my fucking night.

I also love Clear the Area and basically every song on that album -- in fact Speak For Yourself might well get my pick for album of the decade.

4
Palmzlike86•

Muse is amazing, but I thought 'The Resistance' was a pretty big letdown of an album. KOC is obviously awesome, but I think they have a lot of songs better than Unnatural Selection. Like Plug In Baby!

1
Absyrd•

Took me a while to get into both of them. Keep trying! Also, list some of your favorites please.

1
jngrow•

You don't like the vocals in Radiohead or Muse. If this isn't the reason, then you don't like alternative rock, plain and simple.

1
cancon•

What a ridiculous statement; it's not that plain and simple. Last time I checked musical taste is a subjective thing, there is no template for what I should or shouldn't like. Do I like alternative rock? Sure, some of my favorite bands are considered "alternative rock". Broken Social Scene, Arcade Fire, MGMT, Phoenix, Kings Of Leon and The Flaming Lips are all just cakes baby. So because I don't like Muse or Radiohead, I'm some kind of imposter or something? Sure, whatever. I'm just gonna keep enjoying the music that I like, regardless of what you classify it as.

Grizzly Bear - Two Weeks

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tjecYugTbIQ

This song, in my opinion, is near perfect. It is poppy, and it is catchy, but it doesn't get old. Its very uplifting. I can't explain it, but it has a certain element that makes me feel good.

20
daebat•

I think the knife is better but that's why music preference is subjective. Gotta love the video too. I remember I got into Grizzly Bear three years ago when they were going to open for radiohead.

2
tweedboss•

Knife is great as well. But for some reason, I really can't get into Grizzly Bear's older stuff. I can't stand Horn of Plenty and only like some of Yellow House. Veckatimest is completely different for me.

1
daebat•

Interesting because I haven't dug much of anything they've put out. Haven't given Veckatimest a listen yet though so I'll do that.

1

I highly recommend it, but I can totally see where people would despise it.
