While I am grateful that Starbucks is extending the catastrophe pay, I really think adding two weeks isn’t enough to prevent us partners from spreading it while working. While it is different in each state, most are seemingly predicted by experts to have their peak cases in the next coming months. So two weeks really isn’t doing all that much to help flatten the curve. I realize by saying this that a personal worry that I’m sure many of us have is Starbucks may be weighing their options of extending it again, sending us all back to work, or laying off people. I KNOW Starbucks can afford to keep paying us catastrophe pay and if they really did CARE about us they would extend it further than two weeks. But realistically, they are a business when it comes down to it and will act in self-interest. I really would like to have more faith in them but after what they’ve done the past months it really makes me feel like the only reason they’re giving us catastrophe pay is to avoid a PR shit-storm. And I feel that we may all have to raise hell for Starbucks again just to make sure we’re all safe and not spreading this.

Honestly I see it as more of them taking it day by day and I am very grateful that I am getting paid to quarantine. My mother is out of work right now and filing for unemployment because her hotel is forcing her to use vacation time and it might end up affecting her benefits.

We should definitely not forget that corporate has been trying to cut coverage and make our lives generally difficult before this whole thing started, but I am willing to give credit where credit is due.

Whenever I pass by starbucks on my way to work I usually assume they're closed because there's only 1 or 2 cars in the parking lot...which could be partners cars. How many people do they have working peaks now that it's DT only?

Leaping_ezio:Barista: Barista•

Before I left for my 30, we had a full 6-7 man staff on the floor. But we are also the busiest location and we’re hitting LY even with all of this going on. I guess it depends by location

Correct. This virus isn’t going away any time soon. Plus we have customers coming through that are certainly not essential workers either. Just normal people that should be staying at home but still want to come by for literally nothing but a cake pop or frappucinno. Starbucks closing down fully would be the best thing to limit exposure.

And you are correct, CAT pay and the $3 extra would have never happened had there not been such pushback. They’re only doing it as a PR stunt, it was never because they care about their “partners.”

20
ihatemaps•

You are crazy if you think Starbucks would spend that kind of money over a "pr stunt." I have not hear of a single other business paying their employees diplomat to stay home, yet no one here does anything but bitch about the company. Why do you still work there?

16
The_walking_man_•

Universal is currently paying their employees to stay home. They did that before anything was offered by starbucks.
Check around. Others as well.
There was no plan in place originally to look out for us.

tbh I’m just glad I’m even able to do this because my mom, who’s 60, works at petco and they’re literally not giving anyone more than 5 days off. I admit the bar is low.

Do you know if this is for Starbucks Canada too?

24
bananatacocat•

An open letter to Starbucks partners from Rossann Williams, evp and president, U.S. company-operated business and Canada

That's the header of the statement, so I believe it does. But I haven't heard anything from my SM yet.

24
Frosted_Picasso:Barista: Barista•

I haven't heard from mine either, that's why I was wondering. Seems like there's usually a few days delay between US news and Canada, guess we'll see.

12
bananatacocat•

I just checked my app and it links to basically the same statement on the Starbucks stories Canada page so I think SMs will just need a bit of time to catch up. Here's the Canadian statement

11
Frosted_Picasso:Barista: Barista•

Thanks! I didn't see it when I checked but also maybe I'm blind haha

Alleyyy_Cattt:Barista: Barista•

We're having a conference call with our SM tomorrow morning, so I have a feeling that it applies to Canada as well.

So if we started our leave on March 22nd do we still only get 30 days of pay? I’m trying to find out information but it’s not really clear on what happens if we go over the 30 days.

4
cupperoniOP:Barista: Supervisor•

The paid leave is extended until 5/3 now vs the original 4/19 date. So if you started 3/22, then you'll be paid up to 5/3 if you decide to continue the leave.

So it'll be more than 30 days of paid leave for people that took the leave immediately.

25
nowaternoice:Barista: Barista•

so if i took the leave immediately its more like 40ish days of paid leave?

11
cupperoniOP:Barista: Supervisor•

Well, 3/21 to 5/3 is 44 days.

8
LenaBaneana:unicorn: Pride•

Holy cow. Just finished my training at sbux before the pandemic, and the way they are handling the paid leave makes me feel really cared for. I also work at Whole Foods and im pretty upset about how they treated us at first.

Does anybody know how much? Or is it based off average hours?

4
lnlyextrovert:Barista: Barista•

I believe it’s based off average hours. I think I also read they’re taking the average based on past weeks before the coronavirus spread in the US so that the pay isn’t impacted by the reduction of traffic.

7
bbun223:Barista: Supervisor•

Yeah, my SM told me it’s your average hours for the month of February that they are using as the guideline for how much to pay out for cat pay, as well as topping off hours for those who are staying at work and may be experiencing shortened hours from what they usually receive.

3
Jasher1125•

Misinformation EVERYWHERE. Per our district manager and regional manager, it's based on your last 52 week average. If you haven't been employed for 52 weeks, it's based off your Starbucks tenure.

I’m super worried about the benefits audit in July. It’s not looking good for me based on having taken time off for some medical stuff early on in the audit period.

3
mayor-em:Barista: Supervisor•

They’ve lessen the amount of hours needed to retain benefits. Also if you need to, vacation counts at a benefit hour. Submit if your short.

11
econstantins•

It’s only gone down by 10 hours so far and I’m not eligible for vacation pay as of yet.

4

DdeeJJ_•

Is this also for licensed Starbucks. Such as HMS host?

2
cupperoniOP:Barista: Supervisor•

This is only applicable to corporate Starbucks.

Licensed companies work for the parent company that you're hired under. So you work for HMS host not Starbucks [Corporate].

6
DdeeJJ_•

Interesting. The articles on it were misleading. It continued to say it was for all Starbucks Partners. They never mentioned that it was only for the corporate ones. Thanks.

-7
cupperoniOP:Barista: Supervisor•

It isn't misleading...

We call our employees partners because we are all partners in shared success. Every partner at every level of the company is eligible to receive an annual grant of company stock through our Bean Stock program.

You aren't a Starbucks Partner when working under HMS Host, you're an HMS Host employee that is working inside of a Starbucks as a Barista (or other title that HMS Host uses.)

Any issue or concern you have you go through HMS Host because that's who pays you.

you're not a starbucks partner. you're an employee of hms host. just as tarbucks people are employees of target. they follow the rules of their respective company.

5
masamune117:Barista: Supervisor•

While im a supervisor at a Corporate store currently, I used to work for a HMShost Starbucks at Dulles Airport. At least during the time frame i worked for HMS, corporate partners could not use their partner numbers at any of the 5 outlets hms operated in Dulles airport, and customers could not use their use of their gold card for any of their benefits ( this was back in 2010-2013). Things could have easily changed since then, but there was time where there was a big difference between license and corporate stores. I just hope HMS is doing something right by their employees during this Pandemic.

2

In the Orlando airport they had them cleaning till 2 pm (even tipped workers) than laid them all off

I went on my 30 day leave on March 22, and was supposed to be back around April 21st I think. Does this automatically extend my leave and CAT Pay until 5/3??

1
cupperoniOP:Barista: Supervisor•

No, you need to communicate with your SM if you want to extend the leave from 4/19 to 5/3.

1
redbearddonk•

But I have the option to go past the 30 days? Sweet! Thanks!

1
vackerman•

So I volunteered to work through catastrophic pay cause I wanted the extra $3 pay, does this mean that I continue to work the extra days off? is it too late to take the leave? I’m exhausted...

1
cupperoniOP:Barista: Supervisor•

You can start the leave at any time up until 5/3.

1
Kyla_Shinestorm:Barista: Barista•

I have a question about partner benefits. Even if your store is open and you opted to take CAT pay are you still eligible to get your 1 drink and 1 food mark out everyday?

1
cupperoniOP:Barista: Supervisor•

Every single partner is "eligible" and able to take advantage of that.

1
Kyla_Shinestorm:Barista: Barista•

Thank you. Because I was told a very different thing and was told not to bring it up.

DoodlingBarista•

I wanna make sure I am understanding this correctly. They are going to continue the service pay, the extra $3 an hour until 5/31. But now everyone gets it since those on CAT pay have to come back to work unless they use one of the other options. This slightly ticks me off because it makes me feel like all the stress and working in possible dangerous conditions meant nothing. That I could have gotten CAT pay and then came back for a whole month of service pay.
