Short thoughts in short sentences.

Where did my dreams go?

I've been so focused on being,

That I've forgotten who to be.

There are things I do not know,

And no amount of thinking

Will bring these thoughts to me.

Am I who I claim?

I have standards

And qualities,

But they are not the same.

I've been stuck hiding in the open,

Pretending that closing my eyes hides my flaws

As I add more to the pile and hope it'll be alright.

I never end up alright.

I'm distracted,

Thoughts clouding actions,

To where I hurt who I claim I help,

And hand them the blame.

I lost my pattern.

I was supposed to repeat things.

I cheated early on and now I have no will to be consistent.

Is this poetic?

Is this real?

Am I lying to myself again?

Who haven't I lied to?

When will it be found out?

Will that make the truth feel correct again?

If only I did.

Your first stanza was an immediate attention grabber. “Where did my dreams go...that I’ve forgotten who to be.” This to me offers a dreadful tone, that the urge to plan and prepare for the worst has already occurred. Rather than a decline in ones life successes, instead it’s stagnant, so the poets impending doom, is already present before their eyes. Thus being, a well said and a great piece.

"I lost my pattern" - a clever insight since in the poem you do exactly that. But actually I wish you hadn't - the rhymes were subtle and already conveyed impending disintegration.

That's good advice. The reason I did it the way I did was that I was sitting there thinking and these thoughts came to me, so I wrote them down in a poem form because, well, I can and I think it fits. I wrote this all in one sitting and didn't allow myself any help or any changes once it was done, as I said in another reply. I didn't have a rhyme and I didn't want to force the poem to bend it's meaning just to rhyme so I broke the "facade" and just spoke instead of rhymed in a more free verse style.
Thank you for your comment though.

Hello readers, welcome to OCpoetry. This subreddit is a writing workshop community -- a place where poets of all skill levels can share, enjoy, and talk about each other's poetry. Every person who's shared, including the OP above, has given some feedback (those are the links in the post) and hopes to receive some in return (from you, the readers).

If you really enjoyed this poem and just want to drop a quick comment, to show some appreciation or give kudos, things like "great job!" or "made me cry", or "loved it" or "so relateable", please do. Everyone loves a compliment. Thanks for taking the time to read and enjoy.

If you want to share your own poem, you'll need to give this writer some detailed feedback. Good feedback explains from your point of view what it was like to read the poem, and then tries to explain how the poem made you feel like that. If you're not sure what that means, check out our feedback guide, or look through the comment sections of any other post here, or click the links to the author's feedback above. If you're not sure whether your comments are feedback, or you have any other questions, please send us a modmail.

This is great, I really enjoy the very human questions you are asking yourself here, it's very relatable to probably just about anybody. Was this pre written or on-the-fly? Because the self-conscious(?) Spacing at the end was great.

I wrote it in one sitting and forced myself to not alter anything after I wrote it, save for spelling and grammar.

Thank you for your comment.

Oh man, I don't know what you've went through to make this poem, but I can relate to it a lot, there's this overarching feeling of trying to believe youre some sort of good person, but under your standards failing miserably at it, and be cause of that, you start being punished by a divine force for "cheating", the thing is you don't know if there even is a divine force, or if you created it yourself. It's like trying to see a pattern on a purely chaotic world, and trying to find yourself inside that chaos.

I don't have the answers to your questions, but as time goes on I truly think some of those question will go unanswered, and paradoxically, thats the answer itself, great poem!

I ask myself the question of qm I who I claim to be all the time, and generally I'm putting on a facade. I feel like this poem was written from a deep sense of depression that I hope you are able to conquer, you've got this and keep up the creative expression!

As everyone here has commented, this is certainly relatable in many ways. There was one line through, that stood out to me "hiding in the open". It really gave me pause for thought. Two opposing words/ concepts that shouldn't go together but do. I think most people are hiding in the open, although I suppose that some are hiding in private. Nonetheless, we are all hiding and I imagine this particular line makes people feel like at least they are not hiding alone.

This is really interesting and gets to the heart of how we are constantly shedding identity, even in the middle of writing the poem. Well done
