Best local third wave coffee (cafes in Manhattan)?

I moved to NYC from the Bay Area where I used to go to some really good third-wavey coffee roaster cafes (Verve, Chromatic, Devout, Blue Bottle before they were cool). So far, I haven't really found any place in Manhattan that matches that style and quality (lots of light and floral/fruity or natural processed coffees, emphasis on pourover and single origin espresso). Blue Bottle in NYC seems decent, but they're an SF roaster and weren't even my favorite in the area when I lived there. What are some good local roasters with cafes I should check out (bonus points for locations in midtown or UWS)? The best I've tried to date was Black Press coffee in upper west, which serves Parlor coffee (Brooklyn roaster).

TIL what "Third Wave Coffee" is. I strictly fucks with Bustelo, but this all seems pretty interesting. I should prob expand my horizons.

It's what actually keeps the city running. Those that know, know.

It’s just a fancy term for any coffee that isn’t a chain.

ahhh , i see. I heard that blue bottle was owned by nestle, so I guess that ruins it's 'Third Wave" rep.

No it isn't.

First wave: folgiers

Second wave: peets, Starbucks

Third wave: coffee from individual farms instead of countries.

Where to get reliable brewed/pour-over decaf coffee? from 9 months ago garnered little comment. Good Pour Over Coffee in NYC? Is it Possible? from 5 months before that recommends Black Fox and Coffee Project among others. The OP of that thread also updated with:

I kinda gave up, seems the life in NYC is too fast to be able to find a good pour over, it just takes time. This leads to the quality of beans being roasted not to matter as much, at least for drip and filter roasts.

This doesn’t surprise me at all. I was just in SF for work and waiting 5 minutes for my regular freaking hot coffee almost gave me an aneurysm!

Welcome to NYC, SF transplant here It took me a while to find the good stuff, in fact i kept ordering Equator beans for the first couple of months. My faves in order of....how favorite

St Kilda in chelsea Coffee project in chelsea and E. Village Terremoto in Chelsea Intelligentsia at the high line hotel Sewada but it's closed, not sure if it will re open Think Coffee (hit or miss but sometimes it's a good pour over) Variety coffee. Good for espresso drinks, filter is 711 quality but their beans are good for home

haven't found anything in the touristy areas, they're usually lower quality, like stumptown and blue bottle

And whatever you do, DO NOT go to Starbucks reserve, it's tempting but it is awful

my 2 cents

There are so, so many. Also it's worth noting Blue Bottle is no longer cool, they're owned by Nestle now. ;)

- It really depends on the neighborhood. I don't know as much about midtown and UWS but when I'm in midtown my absolute favorite to drop by is Culture Espresso, who also happen to have the best chocolate chip cookie I've ever had in the city. Or maybe ever. Fantastic coffee too. They have a few locations scattered through midtown.

- I'm more downtown but we have some great stuff around here with an emphasis on all the things you listed: Cafe Integral, Third Rail, Caffe Vita, MadMan, Roasting Plant, Everyman.

- Cafe Grumpy is a small local chain with stores throughout the city, including some in midtown. They were among the first shops to bring this format of coffee (especially pour overs) to NYC a little over a decade ago.

- If you find yourself near 23rd/6th there's a really amazing Joe Coffee Pro shop. It's kind of a hidden gem as it's not like one of their normal sit-down cafes, it's just a to-go spot with a focus on high-end espresso and pour overs.

- While not a local NYC brand, The Stumptown inside the Ace Hotel lobby in NoMad is also really good and has been there for years - better than the usual Stumptown locations.

- Lastly this might be a little outdated but someone once made a subway map illustrating the best coffee shops near any stop in the Manhattan.

Hope that helps!

Another vote for cafe grumpy! Can’t believe it’s not mentioned more on these posts.

Sey Coffee is a local roaster that tends toward lighter roasts and interesting coffees as well. Their only cafe is in Williamsburg, but I've seen them served at other cafes, including Office Coffee on Canal St.

The Coffee Project has a few locations in the city and is also quite good.

Try r/coffee, they're absolute geniuses with this. I also have found much less "3rd wave" here than other places. Roasts tend to be darker and less refined here.

I am fully reliant on coffee but easy to please so not sure if these fit but check out:

Devoción has a Manhattan location (https://www.devocion.com/pages/devocion-cafe-flatiron-district-new-york-ny) Gotham Roasters (https://www.gothamroasters.com) Irving Farm has an UWS location (https://irvingfarm.com) Partners Coffee apparently has a Manhattan location (https://www.partnerscoffee.com)

Also as many others have suggested, I’ve had good experiences at Coffee Project.

Blue bottle is owned by Nestle now as well (for those that care/want to go local).

I've had Sey Coffee on my list of places to go for awhile, but it's definitely not conveniently located. Still, if you're looking for a coffee-excurison, it might be worth checking out.

Yanni’s in Chelsea serves Sey, on 18th and 6th I think.

UWS...try out Sensuous Bean on W70th and Columbus. Not a chain and I don't really speak coffee, but from a quick search about "third wave," i think you'll enjoy it. Not a place to sit and hang, but whoa do they have knowledge and range.

Black Fox Coffee has locations in midtown and FiDi and is my favorite multi-roaster cafe in New York. They've carried some great international coffees, and there's always a focus on lighter roasts.

Blue Bottle has a roaster in Brooklyn, I get it by mail order. Joe Art of Coffee, not and the Juice, has a drip coffee that tastes about as good as any I've had I the city. Almost as good as pour over

I was gonna suggest parlor, that’s before I read your whole post.

Try counter culture for tastings / kuro kuma serves it as well. Counter culture is amazing for light roast single origin beans—especially those with blueberry notes! That said the Bay Area has amazing coffee sight glass blue bottle etc haha

On the UWS Black Press and sometimes Irving Farm are my go-tos. Also do Joe/Blue Bottle from time to time. It’s been temporarily closed for awhile but I really liked Boxkite as well.
