/r/hockey's 2012 Mock NHL Entry Draft!

Welcome to the 2012 r/hockey Mock NHL Entry Draft. First of all, I'd like to congratulate the LA Kings on their Stanley Cup win, and second of all, as the mock commissioner, I'd like to encourage everyone to boo the real commissioner tomorrow night because it's always hilarious. And since no one likes sitting through all the preamble of the real draft - let alone a fake one - Edmonton, you're on the clock.

Please have your selection in by 9:05 PM, at which point, Columbus will have 5 minutes on the clock. If you've been elected your team's GM and your name isn't up here, please make sure you've sent me a PM. Also, your team will be on the clock until the expected 5 minute interval. If I get Columbus at 9:06, the Habs will still have until 9:15 to get me a selection, so GMs should be able to plan when they're needed.

Anywhere that I've left "GM" was based on the consensus draft rankings care of Derek Zona, found at nhlnumbers.com. GMs whose names are linked didn't make the pick during the draft - their picks were taken from the linked subreddit discussion. If the names aren't linked, they made the pick to me in a message or in the comments below.

And that's the draft! Thanks for all the GMs who participated and everyone who helped build some discussion in your team subreddit threads. Come back tomorrow night and we'll figure out just how much NHL GMs try to live up to Reddit's mock draft!

With the 5th pick in the 2012 Reddit NHL Entry Draft, The Toronto Maple Leafs sub-reddit are proud to select, from the Sarnia Sting, Alex Galchenyuk.

LoneWolfComandoARIAlt1NHL•

You wrote that out almost exactly as I was planning on doing mine. Well done.

Prepare for the Wrath of Grapes!

7
jokaneeMTLOld1NHL•

Alex Galchenyuk! American! Russian! Surely not from Ontario!

13
gthankECHLGwinnettGladiators•

Hey, thanks for the template.

3
rawbamaticTORNHL•

I am very pleased with that decision. If we can get Galchenyuk I will be a very happy camper.

3
smegkw31MTLNHL•

Doesnt make it past mtl

5
Chrisss88TOROld1NHL•

I know this is true, but we can hope, right?

1
rorydanielCGYHorseNHL•

What a steal by Washington

17
Rude_UrbanismCGYOldNHL•

He's projected to be one of the top Zemguses of all time!

6
fatlouiWSHAltNHL•

If only this mattered at all.

4
conventionalcanadianMTLNHL•

Agreed.

2
gthankECHLGwinnettGladiators•

Quite.

2
George_Bluth_IIMTL - NHL•

It is my opinion that Reinhart will be better than Murray as well as the best defensemen to come out of this draft

2
jokaneeMTLOld1NHL•

My personal pick is Alex Galchenyuk, but MTL subredditors seemed to sway towards Grigorenko - so I also crumbled to democracy..

13
TheRatWhoWouldBeKingMTLNHL•

I agree with your personal feelings!

10
jokaneeMTLOld1NHL•

Damn, if it was 50/50 on the Habs board I would've went with Galchenyuk - but I didn't want to look like a total dictator! ;)

If that's the way the wind blows, let it be said that I too...do blow.

1
iezugodCBJNHL•

That was my personal pick too...

1
jokaneeMTLOld1NHL•

Well, man, one of us will be personally disappointed in 24 hours! haha

1
[deleted]•

Of course we pick the Swede.

12
ZeeZee19OTTNHL•

ahahah

3
ericdavidmorrisNYINHL•

Despite my feelings I believe the Isles subreddit will go with Ryan Murray

ProjectrevolutionNYINHL•

woooooooo

3
tanu24NYI - NHL•

Defense wins championships and the kids good at his job. I see no problem with this

3
Chrisss88TOROld1NHL•

You won't be disappointed with a kid as good as murray.

1
TheRatWhoWouldBeKingMTLNHL•

Yeah.. so ill take the Boston GM position if its not a problem..??

11
VasiliiZaytsevNJDNHL•

TheRatWhoWouldBeKing

Nice try, Brad Marchand.

8
MudhippyANA - NHL•

This made me laugh way to much.

2
LoneWolfComandoARIAlt1NHL•

Draft me! I play in a beer league! I'm sure that's right around what you're looking for for them.

4
iezugodCBJNHL•

Despite my personal feelings, the CBJ subredditors have overwhelmingly chosen Filip Forsberg. That's our pick.

10
poultrybotOHLOttawa67s•

Damned democracy!

8
iezugodCBJNHL•

I almost pulled a Doug MacLean and over-ruled them and picked Gally. (In 2005 Douggie Mac over-ruled his top guys who wanted to draft Kopitar and instead drafted Gilbert Brule.)

13
LoneWolfComandoARIAlt1NHL•

and we see how that turned out..

9
iezugodCBJNHL•

Yep, didn't I just see PHX isn't going to re-sign him?

5
Cannon49OHLNorthBayBattalion•

...Maclean's doing radio and TV for Sportsnet and Kopitar is the Stanley Cup Champion

4
poultrybotOHLOttawa67s•

We passed on Kopitar that year too. I don't think anybody really accepted that a Slovene could be that good at hockey.

0
CBJDJ•

Hate playing it safe.

1
poultrybotOHLOttawa67s•

I don't think you can go wrong with that kid. And he's not Russian, which has got to be a bonus.

1
teerav42COLNHL•

Number 2 overall Swedes are a good choice :)

Also, look at my flair! It is back and more beautiful than ever!

6
LoneWolfComandoARIAlt1NHL•

Oh shit! our flairs are back!!!!

7
seKer82VANSkateNHL•

You should have went with your gut Forsberg is overrated.

3
iezugodCBJNHL•

Forsberg is a kid in a men's league. We'll see how he develops. But CBJ need a sense of urgency and a guy who won't even be playing in NA for at least 1 but likely 2 or 3 years doesn't fit that profile.

2
seKer82VANSkateNHL•

If the Blue Jackets draft Forsberg expecting an instant impact they are going to be disappointed. Even if I didn't think he was overrated their system doesn't currently have the core group of players that imo are required to develop a player with his skill-set.

At best I think they would end up with another Derick Brassard if they draft him.

Ryan Murray is who they should be targeting with that pick.

4
commentasticOPTORNHL•

Forsberg is already committed to another year in the SEL, I believe, so no one drafting him will expect an instant impact (and that's probably the case for each of the top 5 this year). I also wouldn't minimize the difficulty of 17 points in 43 games as a 17 year old in a full-pro league. That said, if Columbus wants Forsberg instead of Murray or Yakupov, they should be trading down.

2
Chrisss88TOROld1NHL•

So was Paarvi-Svensson. I haven't given up on the kid yet, but people were predicting for him to have a big impact this year...

1
SierraFoxtrotOHLBarrieColts•

Does anybody think that this would be a good idea: I create a table of all the picks here and keep track of their NHL careers. Then, 3-5 years down the road, we can all look at their stats and reflect on this mock draft. What do you say?

10
klabobFLANHL•

Do it, I'll look like a genius!

3
commentasticOPTORNHL•

Could do that, but it doesn't seem much different than filling in from hockeydb or hockey-references' draft sections. (2011s used for examples)

2
SierraFoxtrotOHLBarrieColts•

Well, the difference is that I would use the picks from this Mock Draft instead of the actual NHL Draft. Perhaps I would compare the two drafts as well.

6
Rude_UrbanismCGYOldNHL•

ScottyDontKnow > Brian Burke

1
LoneWolfComandoARIAlt1NHL•

Yes. And we should update this list every year. You can bet your ass I'm going to be watching what my pick does with his career.

2
ShadowChairLAKNHL•

Wearing black, white and silver, my friend!

1
LoneWolfComandoARIAlt1NHL•

Which is fine, The Kings are one of my favorite teams behind the Yotes, except Dustin Brown is a complete ass. [in my opinion] And if they hadn't knocked us out on the way to the cup, I'd have pretty much nothing against them right now.

1
ShadowChairLAKNHL•

Yeah, other than the Kings, Phoenix is my favourite in the Pacific (by FAAAAAAR). Although, that might change with the new rivalry brewing. Don't worry, they will never be worse than SJ or Anahiem.

Cheers to the start of something great!

1
gthankECHLGwinnettGladiators•

That would be outstanding.

1
poultrybotOHLOttawa67s•

I was starting to think mock Ottawa might get mock Reinhart for a second there. Damn, are all fake drafts this stressful?

8
SploPHINHL•

With the 20th overall pick, the Flyers are proud to select the man with most badass name, Slater Koekkoek.

8
theoriginofstormsPHINHL•

KNEEL BEFORE THE KOEKKOEK!!!

5
gthankECHLGwinnettGladiators•

Where's the Zemgus love?

5
theoriginofstormsPHINHL•

his name sounds like something is leaking...

7
SploPHINHL•

I'll be representing the Flyers in this draft and would like to let everyone know I'm entertaining offers for the 20th overall pick. And no, I don't want Paul Martin.

6
commentasticOPTORNHL•

Sadly, no trades will happen at this draft. I'm not going to moderate all the lopsided and rumor-driven offers that hop around boards at this time of year.

7
SploPHINHL•

Awww boooooo but ok.

6
Cannon49OHLNorthBayBattalion•

You made a great pick though.

2
p-engPHINHL•

yup, I'd be very happy if that's who we got.

1
ShadowChairLAKNHL•

Wow, I have 20 minutes extra to pick? Cool.

The Los Angeles Kings subreddit are proud to draft Dalton Thrower.

6
WoozleWuzzleLAKAltNHL•

Thanks ShadowChair!!!

2
ShadowChairLAKNHL•

No problem :)

1
ZeeZee19OTTNHL•

Hampus Lindholm for the Senators

5
poultrybotOHLOttawa67s•

You guys obliterated our shortlist in picks 11 through 14. Jerks.

3
GlussellOTTAlt2NHL•

Great pick, but an even greater name! I was really hoping for Collberg, but those damn dirty Stars took him from us.

2
ZeeZee19OTTNHL•

heart breaker, owell we get a second try tomorrow lol.

1
zisforzebraCGYNHL•

Even the Coulombs fans are bad at drafting...

5
iezugodCBJNHL•

I tried to change their minds

2
LoneWolfComandoARIAlt1NHL•

With the 27th overall pick in the 2012 NHL Entry Draft the Phoenix Coyotes are proud to select Tanner Pearson of the Barrie Colts (OHL).

4
CJRicheyNJDOldNHL•

A goalie? What a waste of an imaginary draft pick

4
commentasticOPTORNHL•

Honestly, I can't imagine any other reason NJ would refuse to forfeit the Kovalchuk pick this year.

9
CJRicheyNJDOldNHL•

Because they have no forward depth in their system and they have one forward signed past next year.

5
commentasticOPTORNHL•

They could chance it on someone falling to the second, but they have a much greater need at goalie in the medium term, and goalies take longer to develop. I mean, they have to get rid of a pick one year, this will probably be the latest pick they get in the next two years, and they should get started on a goalie. Normally I don't like teams taking goaltenders in the first, but I think there was pretty good reason to take Subban there.

3
theWonderslugVANStickInRinkNHL•

does vancouver have a GM, or is it too late to apply for the position?

3
Arunatic5EDMGearNHL•

From the looks of it, it's too late. Check out r/canucks for that info.

1
theWonderslugVANStickInRinkNHL•

it was blank when i asked, hopefully the other guy doesn't screw it up and destroy the imaginary franchise

5
ProjectrevolutionNYINHL•

That would be tragic

3
theWonderslugVANStickInRinkNHL•

think of all the imaginary jobs lost...fake lives ruined....the team would probably have to move to a fictional city....it's too much pressure

3
alf91IIHFUSA•

Idk about you but if he does I'm gonna riot.

2
commentasticOPTORNHL•

Sorry man - I'd sent a message to seKer82 already when you posted, and was about to come to you when he responded. I think next year I'll be a little more on top of locking down GMs early. Thanks for volunteering, though.

1
ibcfreakSJSNHL•

With the 17th pick, The Sharks Reddit chooses Stefan Matteau F (USA-U18) (USHL)

3
REIGNx777SJSAltNHL•

Deja vuuuuuuuuuuuuuu

1
gthankECHLGwinnettGladiators•

It looks like Sebastien Collberg was selected twice.

3
commentasticOPTORNHL•

gThanks for pointing it out (get it? get it? I do something stupid, you help me out, and I reward you with a terrible name-related pun).

(edit: for those who got here late, this was caught early enough that it didn't impact any picks)

10
gthankECHLGwinnettGladiators•

I will wear gThank as my handle proudly (until I get done picking, at least ).

2
gthankECHLGwinnettGladiators•

With the 18th pick in the 2012 Reddit NHL Entry Draft, The Chicago Blackhawks sub-reddit are proud to select, from the Belleville Bulls, Brendan Gaunce.

3
SploPHINHL•

Damn, there goes my pick.

1
gthankECHLGwinnettGladiators•

I was right there with you for the last 8 or so picks :-( Especially sucky is that "GM" was the one eviscerating my board.
