Since I got the May software update on my tab s6 lite (only a few days ago in my case) the Samsung browser performance has been dramatically better. In particular it doesn't seem to be reloading tabs anything like as often as it was.

I think the new update must have changed how aggressive the OS is about taking memory away from the browser so that it doesn't have to keep reloading tabs when you return to them.

When I first got my s6lite I thought that Good Lock was just a lot of cosmetic trinkets. But I have come to realise that there are some really useful productivity features buried in there too.

Here are the ones that I personally have found useful:

  • Sound Assistant

Allows you to run two or more sound sources at the same time. Stops a radio programme cutting out if you click on a short twitter video for example.

(Many other features such as controlling each app volume separately and setting the step by which volume changes for each click on the volume control.)

  • Navstar

Lets you make the navigation bar area transparent and gives you back a little bit of real estate at the bottom of the

  1. The camera and processing. OK - enough said on that one already.
  2. The optical image stabilization. Obviously it works well for photos allowing a longer exposure, but video is superb too. I tried a short video walking forwards at a gentle pace and it is almost like a professional tracking shot!
  3. The recorder with instantaneous transcription. This is a game-changer for me. I make a lot of voice memos while I am out and about and then have review (or not) when I get home. But with instant transcription the process so much easier. I cannot believe how accurate it is too. You can mumble. You can um and er as much as you like. It copes with wind noise and background music. Astonishing!

If you want to work out where the fixed-focus front camera starts to come into focus, use it to photograph a wall or a fence receding away from the camera.

Then inspect the zoomed-in photo to see which brick first comes into focus.

I reckon it's at about the four foot mark so you need long arms for selfies!

(The good news is that it's then sharp to infinity unless you use portrait mode of course - which deliberately blurs the background).

This website causes firefox 75.0 to consume enormous amounts of RAM on my machine

I can't say exactly how much RAM it would consume if it completed because I have to kill Firefox after it gets to about 16GB.

This is the first time I've caught a repeatable version of this problem. But I have had several previous cases where Firefox 75 goes completely RAM crazy.

If you haven't tried Sainsburys "Taste the Difference" Wild Cranberry Sauce yet I can highly recommend it.

It's horribly expensive for cranberry sauce, but hey, it's Christmas right, and your turkey will thank you (by proxy).

Don't ask me how they catch the wild cranberries though. Probably round them up with a lasso or something.

Gerry Anderson was an absolute visionary as we all know.

Now I was following one of those link trails where you just keep chasing the next thing and ended up at the first ever episode of "Supercar" (which is an early predecessor of the very special "Thunderbirds").

And here (at time 14:55 if the link doesn't jump there for you) is surely one of the earliest (and best) deliveries of the "have you tried turning it on and off again?" joke ever captured on film. Take that, IT Crowd.

(Bonus: Sylvia Anderson is credited as Sylvia Thamm on the credits - they got married during the production of Supercar.)
