I'm currently running an i5 4690 on an old LGA 1151 board and unfortunately it just went kaput.

As a replacement I really wanted to go with AMD and nab a 3600. But when I went to get a motherboard I realized it's kind of batcrap crazy. The X570s are too rich for my blood. But nothing else seems to actually ship with Zen 2 support. "You can flash it" - I don't have a Zen 1 and I see a bunch of complaints online from people doing the USB flashes on MSI boards. Consider me spooked. "Then get it from a store" - My local store will charges about $100 more for a motherboard compared to online. For that price I'd just get a X570.

Is there seriously no sane way to just buy a $100-120 motherb

I just replaced an old Korean 1440p 60hz IPS display (Wasabi Mango) with a Samsung VA panel (Viotek GN27) and it's phenomenal. The contrast is just wonderful and the colors are great. I don't really even suffer from too much ghosting, but I may just not be sensitive to it. However, I'm extremely sensitive to the horizontal lines caused by the subpixel layout and the screendoor effect makes it damn near impossible to use this monitor. It also suffers from some pretty irritating brightness flickering when Freesync is enabled and the FPS fluctuates. I really just can't stand it.

I looked it up and nearly all the good VA monitors I'm finding are rebranded Samsung VA panels and they all suffer

So I've got one of these XFX r9 280s ^(and psu) from an old PC I built for another friend (they've gotten their use out of it and are giving it back). Meanwhile one of my other friends got himself a pre-built that has a 1050 2G (non Ti).

So back to the title - would this be harmful or helpful? I know the 1050 is newer and does have a higher clock & smaller node. But the 280 seems to have double the hardware (texture units, shader cores, 3G, etc) and is a nice aftermarket variant. Because of the age difference I can't really find 1-to-1 comparisons, but user benchmarks says the 280 is a decent bit faster though I don't

I've been running this build for a few years now and I've just now had to start turning settings a bit down here and there to stay in the acceptable 40-60 range (depends heavily on the game). I apologize if this is a bit broad, but how does this fair with the current state of things; I haven't been keeping up-to-date? If it helps I would probably look to spend around the same as I got for this hardware @~ $350 for the either (CPU including the mobo and RAM). Are there any new releases to keep my eyes on in the coming future?

From the research I've done it seems like the crypto craze is still annihilating GPU prices even after several years and it particularly hurts AMD. The CPU scenes does

I've used D for a while and it's overall a wonderful language to work with as a hobby, but one thing that's always really bothered me is the disconnect between CTFE and allocation.

If I want dynamic memory for CTFE I have to use the GC, because the other allocators make calls to C through malloc. __ctfe is not a static variable, though, so I can't use it to swap the GC allocator and a system allocator at compile time. This means that any function I want to use for CTFE must use the GC and therefore can't be marked as @nogc (which prevents it being called from anywhere that does).

Is there any current effort to change the semantics of __ctfe or other kinds of workarounds I ca

I'm just so impressed with Alex and what he's done all on his own, I've got to tell the world. A lot of companies are greedy, sly, or generally displeasing to work with, but this is an absolute dream:

A couple months back I grabbed a couple refurbed IceQ 7950s for crossfire (in separate orders). When they both arrived and I slapped them in, I found that one of them had a bad fan that wobbled like crazy at certain speeds. As well, I recently moved and didn't realize how much of a sauna CF would make my room. I emailed Alex and within the day he responded, provided a shipping label, had me ship them back for a full refund, and expedited a replacement order of an XFX r9 290 DD for me to help

Got a GC for my Galaxy S5 and playing with the android apps was nothing short of amazing. The roller coaster gave me a bit of motion sickness because of the low framerate, but Chair in a Room was perfectly horrifying. I imagine adding a bluetooth controller, some SDK improvements, and some proper games in Unreal or Unity 5 can really make it a great platform. Next thing I tried was PC streaming and... oh. My system is pretty good - i5 4690 w/ r9 290, so I know that it's not my machine being the problem. Games run 100+ FPS, but the phone just really hates it.

The main reason I was looking into GC was the potential of streaming from my PC until "real" VR came out; unfortunately no matter what

I recently purchased two HIS IceQ 7950s (blower style) from GPU shack (shout out for their amazing service) and I've found that my stock H440 is simply too hot for the poor things and I. Keeping the front panel on runs them at a quite loud 60% fan speed @ 83C. Removing the front panel alone knocks it down to 54% @ 78C, and removing the side panel drops it to 50% @ 74C. And honestly removing pieces has virtually no impact on the noise other than raising the pitch a bit and letting the fans spin down.

I've been looking for a good case at around $100 to replace it and have found a few options:

  • Air 540 - $100 - Great reviews regarding performance, amazing cable management and a nice look
