So I've been thinking about the classic limp vellum binding, as seen on Henry Hébert's blog. While it is a binding that shows complete mastery of the art, there are a couple things that were bothering me. First, the materials are difficult to source, expensive, and quite touchy. Second, every time I hear "alum-tawed thong" Sisqo pops into my head and that needs to stop.

Since the limp binding was meant to be used, to have them all be fine art pieces now is great for historical practice but it doesn't address the functional side of things.

I have been experimenting with a simple, functional limp clot

Something light for a Monday morning.

You Can't Choose Your Family

“Oh, no, we’re eating clean,”
she chirps over her shoulder,

modern Joan Crawford Thanksgiving.

Shove the leftover bird
in a giant black trash bag,

there’s room for a body in there.

Christ, her children are hard.
She has trained them like inmates,

dessert is a currency here.

She’ll post a staged dinner,
that’s sponsored by Butterball

at the top of her fitness blog.

Advice From Your Old Man, Who Can Never Just Get To The Point Without Telling An Entire Damn Story First

when I was a boy
they elected an actor
and told me “love the flag
and hate the Chinese
and hate the Russians
and fear the bomb
and eat your carrots
so you can see
in the dark”

Baby, you’ve seen me
fumbling in the dark
quietly cursing
searching your mattress
for your lovey
so you can sleep

I ate
so
many
carrots

It's a pretty Friday afternoon, have a beer, write some words, life is good.

Letter to Myself as an Angsty Teen Poet

With the benefit of time
to offer some perspective
I regret to inform you that
the difference between you
and the girl you're writing a love poem to
is that she thinks your dick is small
and your poetry is bad
while you think it
is just
average.

Home for Thanksgiving

Feedback Received!

You can’t have a generation of latchkey kids
without doors to latch and locks to key,
and better shit to do with your time than
hanging around your ingrate children,
so the orchards sprouted roofs and walls
and grew out to the fenceline.
Progress.

I used to know my way around.
Now all the streets look the same,
and boys on bikes look at me like
“Mister, are you lost?”
Of course I’m lost. I’ll ask the phone
to get me back to
Who knows?

Is there somewhere to get a drink in this town?
Or sneak a guilty cigarette?
Was there somebody here I should see
before I head back to my own life?
I can’t say what I feel like I’m missing,
but I

This is a 48 page double-fan adhesive-bound textblock made of 300gsm 100% cotton paper, cased into a Bradel binding. I wanted to know what happened if I ignored all the good advice I'd been given and went ahead with a double-fan binding on super thick art paper. Turns out (image 3) that it doesn't glue properly. The pages stay in just fine, but the surface of the paper tears out when a particular page is opened, leaving little scrubby paper chunks on one side or the other of the gutter.

After the text block was done I just cased it right in, leaving 5mm between each board and the spine stiffener. I had to put a finger against the spine and bend the spine stiff

Just curious if anyone here has tried to back decorative paper with Evolon and use that instead of buckram, silk, or some other fabric.

I'm doing a couple of half-clamshell boxes here shortly, and I'd like the hinges to be papered over entirely - no visible reinforcement on either side, if at all possible. I'll be using decorative paper.

The path of least resistance is to do the obvious thing and cover bookcloth with paper, but I'm getting kind of grumpy about how much premade bookcloth or high threadcount fabrics cost, plus if I use plain fabric I really should be backing that with mulberry paper or whatever as well, making a rather expensive sandwich.

Talas has Evolon at $2.86 for a
