EPISODE 32
Magistrate Hu Xiaochen performed a complex act of self-punishment in the courtroom after Zhu Ming Yuan was apprehended, publicly apologizing to the Wanshan County residents in order to gain their support. Hu Xiaochen promised to provide three months' worth of his earnings to Yao's widow's household costs.
Zhan Zhao became suspicious of a larger scheme behind the killings when a local named Zhao Da Fa casually suggested that the widow accept a few hundred taels of silver first, as was traditional. Zhu Ming Yuan quickly admitted during the interrogation that he had ordered Zhong Shou and the doctor to be killed. But Zhu Ming Yuan was utterly mute when Bai Yutang insisted on knowing how he had learned of the secret identification procedure previously. Hu Xiaochen quickly dismissed the locals who had assembled, sensing the anxiety, and assured them that justice would be served by the government. Zhan Zhao was then invited by Hu Xiaochen to discuss in private in his study. He claimed that there had to be a traitor in their group since the secret identity had been compromised and innocent people had perished. At first, he was suspicious of Prince Hui's young butler, Zhao Zhi Er, but Zhan Zhao stood up for him.
Hu Xiaochen then pointed out that Zhao Zheng De had picked Huo Feng as the target and cautioned Zhan Zhao from being too driven. He warned Zhan Zhao that his close connection with Huo Linglong may damage his image and compromise the investigation as a whole, implying that the Huo family might be secretly united with the Lord of Xiangyang for power.
Bai Yutang and Huo Linglong entered to face the magistrate after Bai Yutang heard this deceptive statement from outside. Huo Linglong angrily asserted that her brother was unquestionably not Zhao Yue An when questioned, and then she walked out of the room. Furious at Hu Xiaochen's obvious attempt to stir up conflict, Bai Yutang punched him hard with his palm, calling him a cunning hypocrite and demanding to know if Zhan Zhao trusted this cunning official or his friends.
Zhan Zhao intervened to keep them apart while disciplining Bai Yutang for acting recklessly. Bai Yutang rushed out of the court, deeply dissatisfied by Zhan Zhao's response. Zhan Zhao stayed behind to assist Hu Xiaochen's unsettled internal energy after their companions had left. Hu Xiaochen pretended to be nice, stating that the townspeople's harsh attitude was only the result of difficulties and describing how it was a long-standing tradition for them to pool money for bereaved families.
Ming Zhu Er soon arrived to inform that Bai Yutang and Huo Linglong had already left with Tang Tian Hao, and he was unable to stop them. Under the pretense of Jin Niang's previous case, Zhan Zhao declared his intention to accompany Zhao Zheng De back to Xiangyang in order to petition the imperial ambassador for Zhao Yue An's arrest. He also left Ming Zhu Er in the safe custody of Hu Xiaochen.
Members of the Xiuluo Cult tried to abduct Zhao Zheng De that evening, but they were caught in a trap. Hu Xiaochen's greatest error was his concern with portraying the perfect rescuer, which exposed his actual identity as Dong Jun. Zhan Zhao had already seen through Hu Xiaochen's façade. To trick him, Zhan Zhao, Bai Yutang, Huo Linglong, and Tang Tian Hao had staged their falling out. They caught two of the cult's best warriors with ease after setting their trap. When Bai Yutang searched Zhao Zheng De, he found the Lord of Xiangyang's special seal, demonstrating that Zhao Zheng De had been threatened to protect the real Zhao Yue An and avoid any direct charges against Shao Ji Zu.
To console Ming Zhu Er, Zhao Zhi Er went shopping for some munchies. Zhao Zhi Er casually said that ten years prior, Zhan Zhao had saved Ming Zhu Er from a family tragedy. He described seeing the old case papers, which suddenly triggered a terrifying, hidden recollection in Ming Zhu Er's mind. He clearly recalled that his entire family had been murdered by the legendary vigilante Yaksha. At that moment, Zhou Ji Liang materialized in the formidable Yaksha mask. He made fun of Zhan Zhao, saying that he was sick of covering up Zhan Zhao's duplicity after taking the blame for 10 years.
Zhou Ji Liang vowed to provide the complete truth about the massacre to Ming Zhu Er. Zhan Zhao became enraged and pulled out his sword to silence the cult leader, but with the help of his men, Zhou Ji Liang was able to flee among the chaos. Ming Zhu Er, distraught and perplexed, angrily asked Zhan Zhao about the murderer of his family. After swearing to constantly protect the kid, the "Yijian Rugu/At first sight" poison in Zhan Zhao's body flared up strongly due to the emotional strain, and he went unconscious.
In order to care for his injuries, Zhou Ji Liang ran to an abandoned temple on the outskirts. In his role as Dong Jun, Hu Xiaochen encountered him there. Hu Xiaochen gladly agreed to provide the twelve live subjects Zhou Ji Liang needed to test a deadly new toxin. Zhou Ji Liang also whined about his two abducted subordinates, but Hu Xiaochen reassured him that he would get them back because they were still needed for his plans in Wanshan County.
Zhan Zhao's life was in danger at the manor. Tang Tian Hao regretfully prepared to utilize the extremely dangerous Heaven's Root & Moon's Cave needling to subdue the rampant poison since he had no other choice.
Hu Xiaochen arrived to seek the release of the two cultists in captivity as a rain started. Hu Xiaochen rudely said that giving up a few lives was a modest price to pay for Wanshan County's prosperity when Bai Yutang and Tang Tian Hao confronted him about his wrongdoing. Knowing that any interference with the delicate acupuncture session would instantaneously kill Zhan Zhao, Hu Xiaochen teased them to attack. Ming Zhu Er took the initiative to free the inmates and ordered the magistrate to take his soldiers and go in order to spare his master's life. Hu Xiaochen turned to face Zhan Zhao as he left, his expression complicated and incomprehensible. Then, bracing himself, Tang Tian Hao thrust the last, most dangerous needle straight into Zhan Zhao's Baihui point.
In the meantime, the Lord of Xiangyang called Shao Ji Zu to the prince's home to see how determined he was about Zhao Zheng De's destiny. Without reluctance or compassion, Shao Ji Zu quietly assessed the situation, speculating that because Zhao Zheng De was presently mute, any quick attempt to silence him may instead result in a complete confession. The Lord of Xiangyang, pleased with his son's cold-blooded logic, commended his discernment and gently reminded him that he was far more significant than the other kids brought up in the courtyard. Shao Ji Zu thought he had a special place in his father's eyes because of this seldom endorsement. When asked about his upcoming marriage with Huo Linglong, Shao Ji Zu reassured his father that all the arrangements for the wedding were finished, regardless of any justifications Huo Feng could have offered.
When Zhan Zhao opened his eyes after regaining consciousness, Huo Linglong was standing guard over him. She clarified that Ming Zhu Er had spent the entire night crying by his bedside and had only departed once he was safe. She was very worried, but she could not bring herself to criticize him; instead, she suggested that he go outside and confront the irate friend who was waiting in the courtyard. Bai Yutang was pounding medication violently outside as a way to express his annoyance. When Zhan Zhao joined him, Bai Yutang asked if Zhan Zhao thought they were unreliable and harshly chastised him for keeping them in the dark about his declining health and his objectives.
Zhan Zhao clarified that he had just wished to shield them from his personal grudge toward the leader of the Xiuluo Cult. Bai Yutang, still unhappy, thrust a bowl of pitch-black medication at him, saying it contained Duan Chang Grass (Heart-Severing Grass) to put a stop to his problems permanently. Without hesitation, Zhan Zhao just grinned, took the dish, and emptied it. Seeing this, Bai Yutang's lingering anger quickly dissolved, especially when Zhan Zhao remarking that while his bond with Hu Xiaochen was forever shattered, having the two of them as his true companions made his sacrifices entirely worthwhile.
EPISODE 33
Huo Linglong and Bai Yutang were relieved when Zhan Zhao took the bitter medication prescribed for him and gradually recovered his energy. Zhan Zhao sat up and made a serious request: they must never tell Ming Zhu'er about the fight from the night before, and they must never reveal his former existence as a Yaksha. The two listened as Zhan Zhao talked about a difficult period in his life, surprised by his concealment.
When he originally became a Yaksha years ago, he was motivated by a desire to uphold justice and was captivated by the townspeople's adoration of him as a heroic villain. The day he raided an unregistered brothel and met Zhou Jiliang, another man going by the name Yaksha, his illusion was destroyed. The brutality and cruelty of Zhou Jiliang's tactics vastly outweighed Zhan Zhao's ideals. While Zhan Zhao managed to free a number of enslaved women, including Yue'er, the elder sister of Ming Zhu'er, Zhou Jiliang maintained the twisted idea that these ladies had been voluntarily sold by their families. Zhou Jiliang pursued and killed the family in a rage of self-righteous vengeance. Zhan Zhao rescued a child Ming Zhu'er from the devastation that night among the raging flames.
Now all Zhan Zhao wanted was for the child to stay unaware of the terrible reality, even if it meant allowing him to think the Yaksha was just a bad thing. Ming Zhu'er entered the room as the story came to an end. The boy was ecstatic to see Zhan Zhao awake and recuperating. He acknowledged that allowing Zhou Jiliang's deceptive remarks to cause tension between them had been a mistake.
Bai Yutang began to wonder why the court was so empty when Ming Zhu'er and Zhao Zhi'er disclosed that they had smuggled certain documents out of the vacant county office. Zhao Zhi'er, meantime, sent a message via carrier pigeon while slipping away to see a local vendor. He had serious doubts about the ten-year-old case because he thought the truth was far more complex than it first seemed. Tang Tianhao got ready to go back to the Tang Sect early the following morning.
He visited with Zhan Zhao and the others before leaving to say goodbye and leave some healing herbs. He pledged to keep looking for a remedy for the poison that was destroying Zhan Zhao's body. Tang Tianhao told them to inspect the town square, where Magistrate Hu Xiaochen was performing another public show, as he was leaving. Hu Xiaochen was planning the public execution of the Xiuluo Cult members who had been apprehended in the center of Wanshan County while yelling pro-justice chants to appease the crowd of people. Bai Yutang was disgusted by the magistrate's exhibition of hypocrisy. Zhan Zhao and Hu Xiaochen got completely distanced when they subsequently confronted each other.
Hu Xiaochen ordered Zhan Zhao to leave Wanshan County right away, citing their long-standing connection as classmates and implying that only his departure could ensure his friend's safety. News of a landslide at Baozhu Mountain that had uncovered a quantity of human bones broke the tense standoff. Hu Xiaochen had already turned the villagers against Zhan Zhao and his friends when they hurried to the site. Duan Shilang's body would remain unharmed because Hu Xiaochen was not aware that they were aware of him. Zhan Zhao and Huo Linglong, who intended to meet up with the others later, stayed behind in Wanshan County to divert the magistrate's attention. Hu Xiaochen did definitely fall for the ploy. He was informed that Zhan Zhao and Huo Linglong were deep in the jungle after making sure Wang Qing and Liu Erlang's bodies were safe.
Hu Xiaochen hurried to the Lin residence in the mountains, thinking they were looking for Duan Shilang. Hu Xiaochen turned to see Zhan Zhao and Huo Linglong following him after spotting his attackers. But Zhan Zhao was forced to turn around again since the magistrate had already surrounded the estate with locals. Fortunately, Zhan Zhao was able to examine Duan Shilang's remains under the guidance of a compassionate and understanding elderly woman, while his comrades recovered two further victims from the mass grave.
Zhan Zhao saw a deep black stain on the tooth roots when he examined the bones. Zhan Zhao recognized this as a classic indication of mercury exposure from the amalgamation process used in metal mining rather than a usual poisoning, recalling his previous work with the prince and coroners. This proved that Wanshan County's mountains concealed a massive illegal gold mine, explaining how the local villagers had unexpectedly become quite wealthy.
Suddenly, Huo Linglong remembered Shao Jizu's cautions. She started to worry that her own family was heavily involved in this dangerous plot. Zhan Zhao came to the conclusion that the main vault for the treasure was the remote Lin mansion, and that the mined gold was being used to finance the Lord of Xiangyang's upcoming rebellion. Hu Xiaochen physically led a sizable gold shipment out of Wanshan County under pressure.
He gave Zhu Mingyuan instructions to remain hidden and follow from a distance, intending to withdraw and get in touch with Zhou Jiliang when they encountered Feng Shao. The Lord of Xiangyang called Hu Xiaochen when he arrived at the Prince's home. The prince voiced tremendous annoyance over Zhan Zhao's persistent interference with their plans, even if he acknowledged that Hu Xiaochen and the Shangui family had contributed the most among his followers.
The prince insisted that Hu Xiaochen take the wealth that the local peasants were holding in order to hasten his treacherous scheme. Hu Xiaochen protested that the villagers had put their lives in danger to obtain that fortune, but the prince remained steadfast, pointing out that Wanshan County would have gone hungry without his gold mine. Hu Xiaochen was cautioned by the prince that if they failed this time, there would be no way out. The Lord of Xiangyang met with Shao Jizu after Hu Xiaochen left.
The prince emphasized that Shao Jizu and Huo Linglong's marriage was the key to their success, dismissing Wanshan County's money as insignificant. He gave Shao Jizu the command to hurry up the wedding. Hu Xiaochen intended to frame Zhan Zhao using the previous Yaksha case, and Shao Jizu consented to help secretly, planning to fuel the conspiracy.
When Hu Xiaochen returned to his office late at night, Zhou Jiliang had poisoned his guards, leaving them dead. Zhou Jiliang demonstrated that he would not be Hu Xiaochen's puppet by experimenting with deadly poisons like Dragon Entanglement and Blood-Sealing Throat. Hu Xiaochen handed Zhou Jiliang another victim in an attempt to gain leverage, promising him plenty of chances to satisfy his bloodlust. Sensing that Zhan Zhao was still withholding information about the past, Ming Zhu'er confided in Zhao Zhi'er the next morning.
Unexpectedly, the residents cried that the Yaksha had returned to bring justice, and shouts broke out outside. At the city gates, where the body of Si Ming, the runaway clerk from Xiangzhou Prefecture, was displayed for everyone to see, Zhan Zhao and his friends joined the crowd. Zhan Zhao, aware that the delicate balance of Wanshan County had been permanently upset, pushed through the chaotic crowd and introduced himself as an imperial investigator from Kaifeng Prefecture.
