Daily F2L Discussion - Case 11
Setup: R U R2 U R2 U2 R' y
Most important solution: y' R U2 R2 U' R2 U' R'
Angles: Easy from FL + BR. Harder from FR + BL.
Mirror: Case 12
Discussion of Case 11:
This is a good example of an F2L case that many perform inefficiently. The natural tendency is to use an algorithm such as U' R U2 R' U y L' U' L. Intuitively, U' R hides the corner, U2 repositions the edge, and R' unhides the corner. You're now left with case 3, which can be solved with U y L' U' L.
Although this solution isn't bad, it isn't ideal, as it utilizes a cube rotation in the middle of the algorithm. If you were to get this case from the FL, for instance, then your solution would involve a total of 2 cube rotations. As mentioned in previous F2L discussion threads, you should never have to do 2 cube rotations to solve a single F2L case.
A much better solution is y' R U2 R2 U' R2 U' R'. The first move (y') places the empty slot in the BR, which is ideal for this case. R hides the corner, and U2 repositions the edge. R2 U' R inserts the pair into the back. Note, however, that we've accidentally broken up the pair in the FR. Luckily for us, it can be easily reinserted using R U' R'. In the final algorithm, the two "R" moves combine to form R2. At worst, this case can be solved with a 7 move rotationless algorithm.
Of course, if you don't have a solved pair in the FR position, then the last 2 moves are unnecessary. In this case, you can simply use y' R U2 R2 U' R.
This case is equally well-behaved from the BR. For the other two angles, it's best to do a single cube rotation (y or y') in the beginning of the algorithm and solve it into the FL or BR positions.
