The Calm Before
#The Calm Before
I fixed myself, ramrodded
against a biting wind and
flexed my jaw,
discarding twenty-seven
ways of beginning a sentence–
then searched my pockets for
a cigarette, before recalling
the fact that I don't smoke.
An autumn leaf, burnt to a
scarlet ember, flitted out
over the bay and was
devoured by the hungry tide.
