You were my coffee shop lover.
Our eyes nervously finding each other,
From the comfort of our tables.
Our drinks drain over the hours.
I look forward to our weekly ‘meetings’.
Where we pass by one another,
Without sharing a word.
What an odd predicament.
I don’t know your name.
“Coffee shop boy” is what I call you,
When I write about you in my journal,
And divulge how you make me feel.
I fantasize about us being a couple,
Where we go to the coffee shop together.
I fantasize about you holding my small hands.
I wonder if yours are soft?
But habits change.
People stop going to coffee shops,
When they have no need to.
Your table sits emp
“Pardon the intrusion”,
I whisper to the dirt,
As my toes push beneath the surface.
The flip side of the topsoil,
Cools my blistering feet,
So I push them down a little further.
The reprieve is amazing,
But I need more.
I take a shovel and start digging.
I dig and dig and dig,
Fitting a pinky, a foot, a leg.
The seared bits of me can finally relax.
The rest of me burns in the sun,
My face, flaking and red.
Yearning for the same coolness as my shins.
It takes hours, but I’ve finally dug a hole,
That is the size of me.
My arms, back, and palms finally find respite.
I look up at the sun,
And bury myself alive.
So I
Dusk has settled.
My eyes sheepishly meet yours,
And yours boldly meet mine.
Humiliation slides down the back of my throat like a dead fish.
Concede, I do.
My limbs stretching out the ache,
And yours, the morose.
Revelations sprout from our fig tree, longing for the moon.
Our roots are tangled.
A splatter of wildflowers to swat away the flies,
A sprinkle of marigolds to avert disease.
Our branches grow in spite, reaching their long arms to the stars.

The space between our fingers grew,
With each gasp of breath.
Lovers split in two,
The becoming of our death.
The look in your eyes,
Is abundantly more dull than last.
Is it becoming harder to disguise?
I wish I had thought to ask.
Humor me a little more,
Let’s hold each other close.
It’s becoming harder to ignore,
I love you most.
I take a knife and pierce your chest.
The hole I create is not large enough for me,
So I take both hands and pry apart your skin.
I position my fingers on your rib cage,
And force your bones to break apart.
There is still not enough space for me,
So I wrap my hand around your lungs,
Unhook them from your mouth,
and pull until they give way.
I think there’s enough space now,
So I try to enter you, limb by limb.
I start with my feet, stepping inside of the hole I created.
Tuck my knees to my chest and fold my arms.
I try to zip you up, but it doesn’t quite cover my head.
I take both hands and twist your heart until it detaches.
I toss it out, final
Mornings first light sneaks in under the curtains,
An unhurried advancement,
Casting tiny shadows on each thread of carpet,
Nominal soldiers reporting for duty.
The soldiers march steadily,
Making their way towards the bedroom,
Climbing their way up the bedpost,
Marching towards the pillows.
Once they reach their target,
Each soldier pulls out one pot and one pan,
And readies themselves for action.
On the generals mark…
CLANG, CLINK, CLATTER
In a violent cacophony,
Sheets are launched off the bed,
Legs thrown to the side,
Eyes filled with both terror and dread.
What a way to start the day.
My love, do you remember when we first met?
Your eyes lingered on mine, a quiet proclamation,
"let me untangle your soul".
And you did.
Ours remains a gentle love, akin to the beach midwinter.
Wind batters the sand dunes and we pull our bodies in a little closer.
The faint taste of salt on our lips, noses colored vermilion.
As months transpire to years,
our book has become weathered with use.
The pages crinkle with each turn as I eagerly read ahead.
There is a quiet comfort in a love so pure.
