Novel fan translation: Love Beyond the Grave

Main characters: He Simu, alias He Xiaoxiao, Sovereign of Spirits

Duan Xu, courtesy name Shunxi, cult name Seventeen

Ep 25: There are ghost fights. I'm bored by them once the actual fighting is over. I'm so tired of Yan Ke, he just does the same stuff! Anyway, Ban Sanxing is captured and held by Jiang An. Yan Ke is being annoying about everything. He Simu considers going to Nandu.

Look at them!

Xue Chenying has gotten so stylish! They go visit Duan Xu's mother, who barely looks at her son and pays more attention to Chenying. Both of Duan Xu's parents are very distant, though for different reasons and Duan Xu is just like, well, that's life.

This look! It breaks my heart

Ug. Yan Ke attempted some sort of proposal which is just embarrassing for him so I will kindly skip his nonsense. He Simu turned him down obviously and then he had a temper tantrum. He Simu goes to meet her Zoom Call friend (Hejia Fengyi) who asks if she wants to see Duan Xu.

This character should be important:

commit her to memory

Duan Xu escorts her sister to see some sort of religious figure, but he doesn't go in (he's an atheist, even though he's met ghosts). His sister thinks he deserves The Best Girl, but of course he's already found her. Duan Xu thinks he sees He Simu, but it's someone else. He Simu appears behind him in the rain.

Ep 26: We go back to Duan Xu's sister meeting Fang Ji/Xianye. He says something that gives her flashbacks to visiting her "brother" as a child. Coincidentally, he also was attacked by bandits, just like her brother!

Hey!

Hejia Fengyi is making something for He Simu, probably to find that missing ghost. A female assassin attacks Fang Ji, but doesn't manage to kill him. Duan Xu then goes to visit the assassin, who is also a courtesan at a high-end brothel. She asks why he wanted her to attack but not kill Fang Ji. Duke Pei is all worried about Fang Ji, but not enough to roll up his sleeve for medical treatment (I jest, but it always does amuse me)

Roll up the sleeve!

We also find out that all the marriages Duan Xu's father wants to arrange are highly political, which isn't surprising. Duan Xu has some sort of plot about his marriage.

He Simu is undercover at the brothel?

But why?

The 5th Prince pretends to be dead and his maid gets killed for it (random?). Fang Ji tells him and Consort Yu to try to marry the three women picked out by Duan Xu's father.

It looks like He Simu is trying to collect her rare ingredient by making men drink 3 jars of wine and then having them tell her a story. Ah, it's human obsession. She decides to go to the banquet held by Consort Yu. Duan Xu is also being sent so he can impress his future marriage prospects. We see Meng Wan all dressed up, she's unhappy about it.

Go back to war!

He Simu and Hejia Fengyi sense a ghost at the party. The 5th prince ghost teleports. He Simu thinks it's Song Xingyu, the ghost that managed to hide from her earlier (who looks like a child). Consort Yu invites the three girls to stay for dinner since her son peaced out. Two agree but Wang Suyi looks uncomfortable, so Duan Xu saves her by suggesting going out to the garden.

Wang Suyi has a strong obsession, though we don't know what it is. She tells Duan Xu they are pawns, but he says you can be a piece or a player (because he has PLOTS!) Then Duan Xu sees He Simu on the roof.

Yay!

Novel bits: Duan Xu about his parents. I actually like that his parents aren't over-the-top evil, they just suck in a very normal way. Well, maybe denying your son's identity when he's kidnapped and then replacing him for 5 years isn't totally normal, but if you've watched enough of these dramas you probably know what I mean.

Duan Xu suddenly turned his head, pinched Chenying’s face, and smiled, “When I was little, I hoped she would wipe my tears like she just wiped yours. But thinking carefully, I never cried in front of her. And thinking even more carefully, looking back through my past life, I don’t know when I needed them most since I became aware.”

Chenying was a bit confused. He tugged at Duan Xu’s hand and said, “Were they not good to you? Do you dislike them?”

Duan Xu shook his head. Looking down at Chenying, he said, “I don’t hate them. I understand them, and perhaps still love them.”

It’s just that today, he no longer needs or expects anything from them.
