Friday Spotlight: Kibitzor

Happy almost-Halloween all you ghosts and ghouls! What better time than now to introduce one of r/running's more elusive masked heroes. Just in time for the spooky season. With times faster than lightning and a banhammer more mighty than that of Thor's, I introduce to you the next Spotlight runner. The mysteriously awesome.... u/Kibitzor!

###The Runner:

First Name?

Frank

Age?

26

Where are you from?

East Coast

Occupation?

ENGINEER

###The Running Q&A's:

What are your PR’s?

5k is about a 15:20, almost had a 14:5x but blew it

8k is about a 25:50, only did one 8k

10k was only done hard once in a Deadmau5 costume in like a 34:xx

Half marathon was only done once in a banana costume. I don't want to talk about it

Marathon #1 was a failure, marathon #2 qualified me for Boston, Marathon #3 will be Boston in a costume :D

What is your distance PR?

27 miles

What’s your highest recorded weekly mileage?

about 75

What’s your comfy pace?

6:40-7:00. I call it my happy pace.

How long have you been running?

About 4 years competitively, and 8 years funpetitively, 12 years total.

Tell us why you began running?

Parents kind of ran, wanted me to a 5k when I was 10. Did that, and then left that on the backburner for 5 or so years. Failed to make the freshman year soccer team since the coach didn't have a need for a klutzy kid who could outrun most but not do much with the ball. Friend said to join this thing called "Cross Country". I was a little confused prepubescent child who didn't know how to say no, so I kept running and eventually went from finishing near the bottom of the team to becoming the MVP.

Most memorable running moment?

Some may think it's when I won a race in a Banana costume after going the wrong way and throwing down a sub 4:50 min mile to take back the lead. BUT, that memory takes second to the little experience I had running down Mass Ave in Cambridge one day. A little plastic trash bag was picked up by the wind and it flew down the road in the direction I was going, probably 13 mph. This little white plastic bag twisted around in the wind in the street as I raced it towards Central Square. I'm almost certain a bystander noticed this impromptu race and gave me a little yell. That memory makes me smile. Also, it probably will never happen again since Cambridge is banning plastic bags.

Do you have a running mantra?

Nobody runs like a refrigerator.

What time of day do you prefer to run?

5pm

Any big races coming up?

No, but I sign up for stuff day of sometimes. The only race on my schedule I can't do that is the Boston Marathon. (Anyone else feel annoyed at themselves for name dropping marathons they're doing?)

What are your short-term running goals?

Maybe do another beer mile, try to break 6:00.

What are your long-term running goals?

Keep getting slightly better, until I'm 41 (Meb Keflezighi gives me hope!) and retire into a new sport where I can kick butt again. Also, getting a girlfriend along the way while running would be super sweet.

What’s one piece of running advice you’d give to the younger version of yourself?

Probably the best long term advice would be: EAT MORE. You grew over a foot in under 2 years. IMAGINE WHERE YOU COULD BE NOW?!

What is something you need to work on to become a better runner?

Scheduling workouts. My training only looks about 3 days into the future.

What is your current shoe choice?

OH JEEZ. I have over 20 shoes to chose from. GIVE ME A MINUTE. Uhhhh. I like the Saucony Zealot Iso 2s during this minute.

Trail? Road? Track? Or Treadmill?

I know you want me to say where I prefer to run, but I'll pretend you want me to say where I want to do a race. I want to do a Treadmill race. Imagine the twisted race that unfolds as hundreds of people simultaneously press "start", and then a chorus of electronic beeping drowns out the initial patter of footsteps. Seconds later, a few unfortunate runners trip on the moving belt and fly off while the remainder stare at their pace for the marathon that's only 26.18 left to go. Hours and many fallen iPhones later, a few runners finish this absurd amalgamation of human drive and technology. A lone man in a red shirt walks up to the winner and says "excuse me, sir. There's a 30 minute limit on treadmills" and I shake out my headphones to flash back into reality and apologize to the gym trainer for hogging the treadmill.

What is your ideal running weather?

The kind where my dog pauses before going outside.

Do you have any social media accounts you’d like to share? [Facebook, Strava, Twitter]

Here's where I review shoes: http://www.runningshoesguru.com/author/frankmay/

Here's my youtube page, you might have seen a few of my vids on reddit already though

You have access to my reddit account, which is waaay more interesting than any other account.

###Just For Fun:

What’s your spirit animal?

Nubian Ibex.

What hobbies and interests do you have besides running?

Take stuff apart. Fix it maybe. Make a youtube video about something silly, post it to one of my 3 accounts depending on what silly stuff I do. Play the piano until I start to get bored, then look at items on Amazon I don't need. Look at something I have. Take it apart. Repeat.

Do you have any hidden talents?

Getting rejected. (owww). Maybe being able to play songs on a blade of grass?

Biggest pet peeve?

Some human sounds, see misophonia. Please chew with your mouth shut, blow your nose, and errbody will be a little happier :)

Dream job! What would it be?

I manage poor kickstarter ideas and try to make them work.

Favorite Quote or Poem?

I'm reading this book called "Packing for Mars" and just want to share something in it I liked reading: “SPCA Suit”—certified humane by the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. “To prove that a suit was safe for a man, we were going to test it on a chimp, but to prove the suit was safe for a chimp, we had to test it on a man,” U.S. Spacesuits coauthor Joe McMann said in an email. “That was a mind boggler.”

This is the kind of stuff that I think about on runs.

What is your favorite movie?

That space one with Matt Damon.

What is your biggest character flaw?

I try to please everyone. Oh wait, this isn't a real interview. Hmm.

What songs have you been listening to recently?

What are some of your favorite non-running subreddits?

###One Final Question:

What is the origin of your username?

I like offering advice or facts when no one asked for either.

Kibitzer is a Yiddish term for a person who offers (often unwanted) advice or commentary.

Had to make it cool for the internet. Made it Kibitzor.

BONUS POINTS TO ANYONE WHO CAN FIND THE FIRST COMMENT I MADE! It was about zombies.

I was really happy to see a fellow moderator nominated. Not just because of the position he holds here but because I, myself, have always been curious about him. It's great to finally get some idea about who he is and what makes him tick. Seems like a pretty great guy. Not to mention the fact that he can run as fast as he does in costumes. That's skill! Please, bombard him with questions today and show him some love. Meanwhile, I'll be looking for the first comment he ever made trying to score bonus points!

####Thanks for reading everyone!!!

#As usual please tag u/Kibitzor's username when asking him a question in this thread!

If you don't the running Gods will give you incurable shin splints for the rest of your life and you'll die a sad lonely wanna-be hobbyjogger.

If I see that you've failed to tag him after asking him a question, I'll try my best to respond to your question by tagging him myself. So be aware. Tagging his username alerts him that his attention is needed. This way, he doesn't have to sift through all of the comments one by one, which can be a rather daunting task when there is a lot of traffic to the thread. Please don't forget that all of our Friday Spotlight athletes may need time to respond to your comments and questions so give them some time to reply.
