Hello, humans. I’m back for my eye. The monsters voice was haggard and drawn out as it crept around the corner, it seemed aggravated. The cabins narrow hallway not giving it enough ample space as its limbs stretched up the walls. Patrick noticed only 1 red dot staring back at him, it had somehow lost its other eye.
“How did you lose your eye?” Patrick asked, hoping to get some sort of intelligent conversation out of it before it killed them. It eyed him back curiously while Daniel crept toward the front door using Patrick as cover. He just wanted to open it enough for them to make a quick escape.
You are not in a place to be asking me questions human, it was taken from me and I’ve come to take it back.
“That’s the one that attacked us at the camp, we shot it in the eye. It’s the only reason we got away from it.” Isabella remarked, Patrick was just happy they weren’t impervious to bullets. At least not everywhere.
Enough talk! The monster lurched forward and attacked Isabella. Julie screamed for her to move and shoved her out of the way as one of its claws pierced through the air and into Julie’s arm. She screamed out in pain as the monster slid its limb out of her arm.
“Move!” Patrick shouted as he fired his shotgun at the monster, all the pellets zipped through it but gave them enough time to start running. He stood his ground and fired the shotgun once more, the bullets phased through it again but with more force as the monster crept closer. It gave Patrick time to start moving with the others, but as it staggered back it knocked the cooler over, flinching as its limb touched the inside of it. Patrick managed to glance its limb changing from pitch black to a dark blue as if the limb had succumbed to a momentary lapse of cold. He smiled as he realized their weakness, it was time to lead this monster into a trap. He ran outside and slammed the door behind him and put the wooden beam across the doorway as the monster caught up to him, it started banging on the door trying to rip it open. “You 3 go in the Jeep, I’m going to lead it away.” He said to Julie who started shaking her head.
“No no no, come with us! It’ll kill you!” She begged him.
“Trust me Julie, I know how to kill it now.” She looked at him in surprise and nodded, her face was getting pale with the loss of blood from her arm.
Kill it? You stupid fool, you can’t kill us! We are immortal! Morteus interrupted his train of thought, he had been there in his mind as always. Taunting him about the child he had murdered, trying to get him to distrust the new people, anything to make it easier for Morteus to find Patrick. Julie ran for the jeep which the other two had already got to, they all climbed in except for Patrick who ran off around the corner of the cabin as the monster broke through the door sending pieces of wood splintering off in all directions.
I’m back! The monster shouted out loud as Julie turned the jeeps engine on, it was getting angrier by the second. It snapped its gaze to the sound of the jeep and pounced on it hissing at Julie’s face. She panicked and fumbled with the driving controls. why am I the one driving?! She thought to herself. The monster thrust one of its claw through the driver’s door shattering the window and ripping her leg open leaving a huge gash, Julie screamed out in pain again.
You really are the unfortunate one aren’t you? Always getting in my way! the monster was staring at her through the jeeps window and brought a claw to her face, it cut her skin as it gently caressed it. You’re Azrael’s little pet aren’t you? Very well, I shall let you live… only to watch you scream as he sinks his claws into your flesh. Oh and by the way, Samantha is waiting for you. Julie opened her eyes at the mention of Samantha. Your friends will have to do for now. After all, they owe me an eye! He pierced Daniels eye almost casually with the same claw and pulled it out of his socket, his eye socket started bleeding profusely as he screamed out in pain.
“HEY!!” Patrick screamed out from the corner of the cabin before firing off a shot above the monsters head, he didn’t want to hit Julie. The distraction worked as the monster turned its attention to Patrick and started running after him as he bolted around the back of the cabin to the back door as the monster followed.
“Daniel?! Are you ok?! Daniel!” Isabella screamed out as both Julie and Daniel were incapacitated with pain. She asked Julie to move seats so she could drive if they needed to but she couldn’t move. “I’ll go get a first aid box from the cabin.” She said as she climbed out of the jeep, she didn’t need to tell them to not go anywhere.
Patrick ran through the cabin to the secret door and pulled the lever behind the light switch, the door opened and he ran through and quickly input the code into the keypad. The monster careened past him and smashed into the wall in its eagerness to get to him, Patrick fired off another shot of his shotgun to hold it back, he only had 1 shot left. Quickly he opened the vault door and ran down into the bunker, the monster following close behind.
You will not live! You will not survive! Humans are destined to die! You live so we can kill you! Stop running!
Patrick ran through the main living area of the bunker and opened the door to the room he didn’t get a chance to show to the others, it was a freezer room ran by a separate generator to keep all their meat fresh. The monster came crashing through the entrance door, destroying the frame and the surrounding wall. That’s going to take some work Patrick thought to himself bitterly. He waited until it could see him and then darted into the freezer room, he only hoped he could outlast the cold longer than the monster could.
You’re running out of places to run little human! it ran into the room and hit a dead end just as Patrick closed the door from the inside. The monster immediately felt the effects of the cold as its pitch black skin started slowly turning into a dark blue colour.
NO! Let me out! Let me out! it charged for the door, Patrick moved out of the way and pointed his shotgun at it just in case. It kept banging on the door slowly ripping it out of its frame. Its skin was turning from dark blue to light blue to white as the flames flickered less violently, it seemed to be working as the monster itself slowed down its violent assault on the door. It turned to Patrick.
If I will die, then you will die with me! the monster screamed as it charged for him, Patrick let out a final blast from his shotgun. It wouldn’t hit the monster but it may slow it down enough to kill it before it gets him, but to his surprise the shotgun pellets ripped through the monsters skin just like it was a human. Holes created by the pellets oozed black blood which slowly froze to white, the monster laid near the beaten door in a crippled mess like a dying spider.
I Just wanted my eye back It said meekly as it placed Daniel’s eye in its own missing eye socket, the eye wobbled around loosely in the socket before falling out. Patrick almost felt sorry for the thing, if not for the slaughtering of billions of humans it was a part of, and the almost killing of his wife. He grabbed his shotgun by the barrel and started battering its head with the butt of the shotgun, he kept battering it until he couldn’t see it moving anymore, then he kept battering it more to make sure it was dead, then he battered it some more just for the sake of hitting it. It was the best stress relief he had felt in a long time.
He suddenly felt himself growing tired as he sank to his knees letting the shotgun drop to the floor, his adrenaline started wearing off and he felt himself getting colder by the second. He got up off the floor and tried to open the door, but it was too battered to open, it would need to be forced open from the outside. Just as he thought it he heard banging on the door, several thumps later and it flung open revealing Isabella who Patrick pounced on and gave a big hug. She looked at the crumpled mess of the monster.
“Y- You killed it?!” she let go of him and ran up to its corpse, it still unnerved Patrick, it could still be alive for all he knew. She inspected it closely, fascinated by its death. She looked to Patrick with a sudden realisation. “Julie! Daniel! They’re both hurt and they need medical attention right now!” She ran out of the freezer room and grabbed a first aid pack before running back up the stairs with Patrick in tow. He had a mental image of Morteus looking disdain, I thought he would be impressed Patrick thought to himself with a smile.
They reached Julie and Daniel at the jeep who were not looking very lively. “I’m sorry, I’m so sorry.” Patrick said to Julie who was wimpering in pain, he took out all the bandages he could find and wrapped them around Julies leg and arm as Isabella did the same for Daniel’s head.
“Hey, at least now you can wear a cool looking eyepatch and look badass.” Daniel looked to her with an angry face, but he couldn’t hold it for long as the pain was too much even to frown. “Sorry.” She said with a slight grimace as she dabbed away blood from his face.
“Let’s bring them inside.” Patrick said to Isabella who nodded back to him. “I’ll need your help with Julie, I’m sorry Daniel but she can’t walk and you can so Isabella is going to have to leave you for a bit while she helps me with Julie.”
“Ok.” Daniel said as it was all he could muster, his heart was racing at a record pace as he stumbled out of the jeep. Isabella looked back to him as she helped carry Julie out and into the house, she felt bad for leaving him but she wasn’t about to defy the man who just killed the thing that murdered all her friends.
“What happened… to the monster?” Julie asked hazily as Patrick laid her on one of the sofas.
“I got it.” Patrick said with a smile. Julie looked to him with surprise, which was difficult to do in her state.
“Really?” she said with a smile, she didn’t know if she was imagining it or if he had really said that.
“Yes.” Patrick stroked her hair back, she was covered in blood as that thing had managed to get her several times. “Isabella.” Patrick said facing her, “Keep Julie here company, I need to talk to Daniel. Don’t let her fall asleep ok?” He didn’t know why he trusted her with something like this already, but he was guessed it was because all humans were on the same side now. Isabella walked over without a word and kneeled beside her giving her words of comfort, a small tear forming in the corner of her eye.
“Hey Daniel.” Patrick said. “How you holding up?” Daniel looked to him with a ‘really?’ look, at least Patrick thought he did. It was hard to tell when he had only one eye.
“I’ll be ok, I’m alive aren’t I? how’s your wife?” Daniel asked.
“She’ll be fine as long as she stays awake.” Patrick looked back to her and back again to Daniel. “How did you take its out eye out?”
“With the gun in the jeep.” Daniel said gesturing to the jeep.
“Any ammo left?” Patrick asked, the ammo on his shotgun had dried up not leaving them with much defense apart from 2 pistols.
“Not sure, we fired 3 shots. It’s an M1, rest of the ammo is back at the camp.”
“Alright, we’ll worry about that later, but for now just get some rest.” Daniel looked up at Patrick expectantly.
“Did you kill it?” He asked.
“Yeah, it’s downstairs if you want to go look.” Daniel looked to the vault door before sitting back down, he would go when he was feeling better.
Walking up to Julie Patrick smiled. “Everything’s going to be ok dear, we’ll get through this, whatever it takes.”
