Julie woke with a start, she felt cold and hungry. For a few seconds she was confused, she didn’t know where she was. Then it all came back to her, the demon apocalypse. Being awake all night because of the consistent knocking, the streets covered in blood and human body parts. The demon from hell that she had named Azrael, the mention of Samantha… bringing all the bad memories back to the surface of her mind.

Wake up lazy bones, everyone is waiting for you Azraels voice came down suddenly, this time it sounded like he was in the room with her.

She opened her eyes, she was still in the cabin. The retreat her husband Patrick had built over many years. The place she had envied since he started it as a new project, the place she wished she could just burn to the ground and Patrick would forget about it, the place that was now saving her life. She looked up, it was dark outside suggesting very early hours of the morning yet she was now wide awake, having rested for what felt like days.

GET UP Julie sat up in shock and buried herself in the corner of the sofa as Azrael’s face flashed in front of her, giving the illusion he was in the room once again. “Patrick!?” Julie looked around, there was no signs of anybody here. The embers on the fire slowly burning out as if they had forgotten to tend to the flames. She gently pulled the blanket off her legs and put on some slippers that were left for her besides the sofa, she was freezing. She made her way to the fire while slipping into her dressing gown, she didn’t know where she had got it from and she could have sworn she left it back at their house in the city. There was no way Patrick would have gone back for it. She grabbed a fire poker and began poking the embers in the fireplace in hopes they would start a new fire, she was having no such luck and reached for a stack of papers and some wood.

You really want to fuel the flames? We live on the flames, we are soothed and caressed by their gentle molten touch. They feed us and make us whole

Why would Azrael be helping her? She stopped just before throwing some paper into the fire, she would find Patrick and crawl into bed with him. Even if she can’t sleep at least she will be warm and by the side of her husband. The light in the living room started flickering on and off, she didn’t remember turning the light on. “Patrick?! Is that you?!” there was no response again. It was probably just the wiring messing up again. She made her way to the bedroom when the front door slammed shut behind her prompting her to turn around in shock. She saw a long black limb slip behind the window, her heart starting racing. “Patrick! He’s here! Azrael! He’s here! Patrick?!” Even if he was asleep, he would be up in a heartbeat and racing to her side. There was no sound from anywhere, not even outside where Azrael was hiding.

I spy with my little eye Azrael spoke in slow tones.

Leave me alone, or I’ll kill you like we killed your friend

something beginning with… DEATH there was a bang behind her and she turned around to see Azrael stood towering above her, almost covering the entire width of the living room staring at her with his beady red eyes. She ran for her life to their bedroom slamming the door shut behind her, there was complete silence once again. The bed was empty with messed up bed sheets strewn across the floor suggesting a panicked exit.

Looks like they left you here, they abandoned you. Azrael’s voice came out from the air, from nowhere.

“No, that’s not possible, why would he do that? He would never do that!”

oh? But he has! Perhaps he doesn’t trust you anymore, perhaps he deemed you not worth the trouble

“Why?! Why would he do that?!” Julie felt something was off, this didn’t feel like Patricks retreat.

Perhaps he found about Samantha… why would anyone want to live with someone that can do such horrible things to another human being? The room started shifting, shifting closer and closer to her until it would eventually force her out of the room, she didn’t want to go back out to Azrael. However much she didn’t want it to, the room kept shifting closer to her until she was forced out of the door, Azrael seemed to be nowhere in sight. She walked around the corner to the living space where she saw Patrick at the door talking to someone.

“Patrick? Is that you? Who are you talking to?” Isabella walked past her while sipping on a cup of hot chocolate, she looked back at Julie and Julie noticed a thick line of bruising around Isabella’s neck. Julie looked shocked “Isabella?! Are you ok?!” She shook her head at Julie before sitting down on a sofa and staring at the wall like a zombie, sipping on her hot chocolate. She looked back up at Patrick who was still talking to someone at the door.

“There’s someone here to see you Julie.” He said as Julie looked on, he moved to the side revealing Samantha, still 15 years old, stood on the other side of the door. She walked off and Patrick followed her, the door closed by itself.

“Patrick?! Where are you going?!” Julie ran up to the door and put her hand on the handle, afraid of what might be on the other side.

Go on, go see what pain you have caused

Isabella appeared besides her, blocking her way back. Julie put her hand back on the handle and opened the door, it didn’t lead to the outside anymore. It now lead to another room, a room with a desk and a bed where grim shadows danced off the walls as the nightlight reflected haunting memories. Julie could hear crying and the creaking of a strained rope. She looked back, afraid to go in and remember the memories she tried so hard to hide from everyone years ago, especially herself. Azrael came crawling around the corner from the bedrooms and slowly made his way over to Isabella who was still stood staring at Julie who couldn’t move, she knew Azrael would kill her if he caught up to her but she couldn’t move. Azrael caught up and wrapped his limb around Isabella’s neck squeezing until Julie heard various cracking noises, breaking Isabella’s neck as she stood there seemingly in no pain. She turned back to the bedroom where Azrael was again, he grabbed her and pulled her through slamming the door behind her. She started banging on the door “No! Wait! Let me back! I don’t want to look! I don’t want to see! Please!”

Look at your history Julie, look what you did Julie started crying, she couldn’t bear the thought of seeing it again. She had only seen a photo before as a form on punishment, but a photo was all that was needed to form a mental image in her mind of what that room must have been like at the time.

She turned around slowly, the creaking of rope and the sounds of a mother sobbing filled the air like a baby screaming the house down. She looked at the corpse of a girl hanging above her bed, slowly swinging back and forth, only 15 in age. Her mother was sat crumbled to her knees by her bedside, face red with anger and sorrow. The girl’s father was now sat at the desk, staring at a gun he had rested in front of him.

“Please no no no, please stop showing this to me please. I didn’t mean to… I didn’t want any of this please, I was just a child! Please!”

I will let you go

“Thank you Azrael, thank you!” Julie was crying a stream of tears now, water dripping from her face like a leaky tap.

Beg the mother for forgiveness, and I will let you go

“What? But she would never-“

BEG! Azrael shouted in anger. Julie submitted and slowly walked up to the mother who was still crying her heart out, the girl’s body still casting a moving shadow over the mother.

“H- Hi.” Julie said to the mum, she ignored her. “I-I’m Julie, I-…” She couldn’t find words to say, what could you say to the mother of the girl you just killed?

“I know who you are.” The mum said, she had lifted her head up and was staring deeply into Julie’s eyes, her face full of hatred and anger. You would be forgiven for thinking she had never been crying. “What do you want?”

“I-… I want your forgiveness.” The mother scoffed.

“Forgiveness?! You think I will ever forgive you for this?!”

“Please… I… I didn’t mean to… it was never what I wanted, please… I suffered too.” That was a stupid thing to say, to the mother of the child.

“You suffered?! You suffered! You’re lucky I’m not like you or I would have had you gutted and stuffed and hung on my wall as a spectacle to all those others who would treat another human being with such disrespect! Get out of my house! Get out! Get out!”

BEG! She would never get out of this without her forgiveness.

“PLEASE! Please just forgive me! I can’t feel anything please… I just… I want forgiveness. I will gladly trade places with your daughter if I could I didn’t want any of this.” Nothing Julie could say would make a difference, it wouldn’t to her and it wouldn’t to Samantha’s mum.

“GET OUT OF MY HOUSE! LEAVE US TO MOURN IN PEACE!” Azrael started laughing.

She’ll never forgive you, never. It’s just as well, she’s dead just like her daughter is… in a way you did her a favour by sparing her from the suffering Julie couldn’t stop crying, she had to get out of here.

“W- Will you let me go now? Please?” Her voice was meek and pathetic, but she didn’t care. She just wanted it to be over with.

Of course I will, there is just one more thing

There was a slight pause as Julie looked up to Samantha’s swinging body. A loud crack of a gunshot flowed through the air.

Julie woke up screaming, she was back in the cabin laid on the sofa. She was sweating profusely and felt like a bonfire had been lit inside her head, Patrick came running. “Julie?! Julie are you ok?!” She gulped as Patrick checked her temperature and her wounds. “You’re fine Julie, you’re fine, just settle back down ok?” he gently pushed back down.

“I… I need water.” She felt out of breath and her throat was dry like she had just run for miles.

“Of course, I’ll go get you some.” Patrick said with a smile. It was just a nightmare she thought to herself, she had just experienced the worse nightmare of her life and it was now over.

Just a nightmare? Azrael said to her with a slight grin.

“Y- You! You did this?!” She shouted to nobody in particular just as Patrick came back into the room with a glass of water.

“Julie? Who are you talking to?” Patrick realized after he asked what the answer would be. “Oh… what did he do? What did he do to your head?” Patrick asked, shaking with anger.

“Patrick…” Julie said, "I need to tell you something, and it’s worse than I thought."
