Wow. 1891 build in Seattle. How gorgeous is that architecture??

When you spend too much time watching Pixar movies.
The designer definitely illustrated kids books. I'm calling it.

Link to the rest of the house for the interested. Such a stunning build. Shame it's in Seattle... and shame it's $2mil lol!
It’s on Queen Anne Hill, just two blocks from the bus I used to take all the time. QA is a very desirable part of the city so I’m not surprised at the price tag. It has a slight view of Elliott Bay and you might be able to see part of the Space Needle from some of the windows. The area has lots of beautiful old houses. When I lived there, in a studio apt in a much newer building, I used to daydream of becoming invisible and sneaking into these houses just to see what they were like on the inside.

Because nobody wants to live in Indiana
2 mil? you can rebuild it for 100k at max. The ground where it is standing... is it that expensive?
To build that for 100k seems optimistic.
Well maybe I have different cost standards. That could be it
Maybe if you did all the labour you possibly could by yourself? I'm just not seeing keeping a build budget for z home with any interesting details that cheap. Even assuming it was only like 1500 SQ ft that's still less than a 100$ a SQ ft which seems difficult.
You most certainly could not rebuild that house as is for 100k. Unless you mean a shitty modern version with different materials and worse build quality.
Don’t get me wrong, I think it is kinda ugly, but the price actually feels reasonable (source: paid similar to this for a 90s house of the same size on the Seattle Eastside)
Being that it's so old, I wonder what it was like through its life. I wish there was a time-lapse. It watched the entire city grow, including the space needle. Just this goofy looking house that used to be in the country, now in one of the most compact cities.
Queen Anne RIGHT next to Kerry Park? That house was never in “the country”. The fuck you talking about? Queen Anne was the first area of Seattle that white people built their fancy ass homes. Which is why it has the name Queen Anne, because of the abundance of Victorian style homes.
My family has been in Seattle for a long time - I have pictures of my great great grandparent’s house in Phinney Ridge (now a very compact neighborhood about 2 miles north of this house), and it’s literally farmland with cows next to the house. Now, if only we had kept that land in the family, I’d own this city.
I was not referring to the ground it is standing. But I don't know how the costs in the US are. So that may be the problem. 240 m² is not that large.
I’m not sure where you’re from so perhaps your baseline is different, but that’s a pretty big house - it’s well above the average in the US. I believe house sizes in the US are on average the largest in the world due to the sheer amount of land we have compared to some other places where there’s greater population density, so objectively it’s a pretty big house compared both locally and globally.

I like the contrast between the old and the new next to it. Old wins in my book.
Imagine how cool the city would look if we had unique architecture like that. It would be so pretty.
What's up with the roof lusby?
LOL I kinda liked it actually. It's satisfying how the roof bends so smoothly.
Is that the dog house for the monstrosity next door?
me, living in Seattle, now sending this Redfin listing to everyone I know trying to get them to buy this house so I can hang out there everyday 🥺
I want to grow some trees around it, dress in prairie and fairy dresses, and pretend I'm in the forest in my magic gumdrop looking house. 🥹
They definitely don't make them like this anymore.
Ligit Victorian
If this were a modern build people in this sub would call this a mc-house. I personally like this house though. Wouldn’t call it a mansion.
Name one thing about this house that makes it mcmansiony
I mean it has a turret - that pretty peak McMansion.
No. It is not.
You asked for one thing that makes this like a mcmansion. Are you saying turrets aren’t a feature of McMansions or it’s not a turret? I don’t understand which you are saying and either way I think you are wrong….
See:
For clarity I don’t mind the house but think you are being obtuse if you don’t see the similarity.
I mean even searching ‘turret’ on this sub shows just how associated with McMansions they are - no shortage of titles naming that single feature this house shares. Right?
I don't think it would be called a McMan, but probably ugly. If it were made with cheap materials and labor, it would look like ass. Probably would be grey if it were modern too lol.
BUT if it were built the same... seeing as people still expressed they didn't like it, I don't think opinions would change.
I think it's got a goofy charm.
It’s not gorgeous at all, to be honest.
To each their own! 🙃
This has so much character to it! Looks chubby in places but I love it.
just NO.
Really? Why? I think it's stunning. It looks like it's straight out of a fairytale. If it were in the woods, I'd be saving my pennies LOL.
There's too much roofing.
Why did they add a sleepy eyelid?
Why have a super modern stainless steel handrail?
Why have the same shape going both inwards and outwards on separate floors?
Why is the silhouette made of random shapes pressed together? Nothing continues, it's just rAnDoM. As if you hit "random house generator" in the Sims.
Why have 1/4 of the front view be roofing, and another 1/4 the doorway?
I didn't notice the tag and the first thing that came to mind was "Jesus Christ that's ugly"
Happened to me too. I find the house very ugly, McMansion or not.
Third on this train. I think it’s hideous.
Jesus dude you know so little about architecture I can’t even understand what you’re trying to criticize.
The sleepy eye lid is called a dormer.
The handrail is tiny and it’s probably aluminum. Weak criticism of something that can easily be removed.
Third point: ???? I don’t even know what you are saying
Fourth point: ????????
Fifth point: ?????
This is an adorable and eclectic house with solid craftsmanship and quality materials. If you can’t even articulate why you don’t like the house, then just don’t.
I don't need to be a Michelin Star chef to tell you your steak is overcooked.
I don't need to be a renowned architect to tell you your house is ugly.
I literally just did articulate why I didn't like it, you just didn't like the words I chose. Who the F cares about what material it is, the point is that it's UGLY even if it's stainless or not. I'm baffled that I even need to write this right now.
Random shapes = big cylinder taking half the front view. Two rooflines that seem to have less than 5° of difference. Random circle hobbithole doorway. I don't get how you don't see these obvious shapes, they're sticking out like a sore thumb.
Look at the side of the house. You have an outwards / inwards that seem to be the same proportions, but on different floors.

LOL well thats fair enough my friend! I'll be honest when I first scrolled past the listing I thought it was ugly. Then I scrolled back up to get a better look and my heart melted a bit.
I think it's because it looks like the house in a children's book that I like it. It doesn't look really random to me, all the lines work together in my brain... but thats my brain we are talking about LOL. I also like all the soft lines instead of the hard edges most houses do.
If it were in the woods, I would be wanting it. Just for how it's got this goofy charm to it.
lol i get your point mate, i just have PTSD i think from making these things
You’ve never made anything like this because the buildings technique and materials have changed so much since this was built and when you started making shitty tract houses.
That's freaking adorable. It's like it has baby fat or something.
Just wanna pinch those chubby cheeks
Right!? Thats exactly what it is. It's like a house in a children's book. It's nostalgic almost.
