Isekai Campaign Episode 18 - The Goddess Of Fate Summoned Us To Another World To Be Her Champions, But She Won't Tell Us What To Do!

Previously on The Goddess Of Fate Summoned Us To Another World To Be Her Champions, But She Won't Tell Us What To Do!:

Four Japanese High School students were hit by a truck and brought to a magical world called Risturan by Bruni, the Goddess of Fate to be her champions. While visiting Filmelon Academy, they were asked by a professor there to give a presentation on adventuring.

Our heroes:

  • Sato - carries a katana and dreams of being a samurai
  • Tobe - carries a bow and enjoys tracking and sneaking
  • Okita - has two companion animals, a spark rabbit named Yokai-chan and a wind hawk named Riku-chan, and enjoys the creepy things
  • Akuto - wannabe gangster who talks with his fists

Together they are The Mourning Cloaks, a silver level adventuring party.

Tonight's session:

Tobe, the most outgoing of the group, led the presentation. She began by having the various members of the group show off their weapon proficiency. Sato deftly chopped some fruits thrown at her. Akuto smashed a melon with his head and punching some others, which resulted in some students in the front row getting splashed with fruit pulp. Tobe and Okita also got splashed, but Sato managed to deflect the fruit with her sword. Tobe then asked Okita to show off her animal's abilities. Riku-chan aimed a wind attack at Tobe, who tried to dodge, but sipped on a melon rind and the wind blew her across the stage and into a box of peaches. Professor Wellig volunteered to be shocked by Yokai-chan and found the experience very educational, healing himself afterwards with a magic circle. Finally, Tobe shot some fruit with arrows.

Tobe then shared the story of how they discovered the new local dungeon (see episode 3) when they went to rescue the blacksmith's daughter. They finished with a Q&A:

  • Why did you become adventurers?
    • Tobe: I wanted to do something important. I felt the tug of fate on my heart (making an oblique reference to Bruni, the goddess of fate, who called them to this world)
  • How many people have you killed in your adventures?
    • Tobe: Yes. It is not something you do lightly.
    • Akuto: People need to be saved. You do what you have to do.
    • Okita: sometimes they haunt me.
  • Why do you adventure in Groseri if you’re from Nori?
    • Sato: This is just where we ended up.
    • Akuto: You call walking in your backyard an adventure?
    • Tobe: we go where adventure calls.
  • How do you learn how to become an adventurer?
    • Sato: go to school and pay attention and learn things like discipline. Work out a lot. There’s a lot of running. Studying fighting or magic is a good idea. Learn how to use maps.
    • Tobe: If you have a mentor that helps.
    • Sato: Don’t break the law.
    • Akuto: Don’t get caught.
  • Did you ever see that play, Sorda the Adventurer?
    • Sato: Not yet. We’ve been busy since coming to town.
  • Do you see adventuring as a viable long-term career?
    • Sato: I don’t know how long.
    • Tobe: I see it as a duty I will do as long as I can.
    • Akuto: I could do this the rest of my life.
  • What’s the coolest thing you’ve done as an adventurer?
    • Akuto: I rescued a boat captain.
    • Tobe: Yeah, we’ve rescued a lot of people, and that’s probably the coolest thing.
  • What do you like best about adventuring?
    • Jori: Rescuing people.
    • Tobe: rescuing people for sure.
  • What’s the worst part about adventuring?
    • Akuto: killing people.
    • Sato: Yeah, probably the killing people.
    • Okita: Sleeping on the ground.

After cleaning up, Primri asked them about the adventures they had been on. The cultists they had fought came up, and Tobe drew a picture of the demon cult tattoo. Primri's brother, Wayu said he'd seen something similar and led them to the library to show them a book on magic circles. He showed them a circle of transformation, which had a similar sigil at the center. Okita asked him about the various students around campus wearing hoods, he explained that they were a part of a special study group led by Professor Itolan.

They then visited a professor of alchemy, because Tobe wanted to know about materials they could use for armor that would repel gore. The professor knew that such chemicals existed, and suggested they ask a clothier if they knew any. Tobe asked if she knew of any practical books on herbology. The professor said that the Filmelons (Primri and Wayu's family) dealt with the herb trade, so they might know. Tobe asked Primri if she knew any herbologists and Primri promised to get her in touch with one.

Lastly, they visited Babak Raib, who asked if Okita was here to play with the spiders. Okita gave an enthusiastic yes, and got to learn from the girls they rescued about sewing spiders and how they help the Raib seamstresses. Tobe mentioned that Babak Raib had wanted to do something for her for saving her granddaughters, and asked her if she knew of any materials they could use for adventuring gear that would repel blood and gore. Babak Raib said "Yes, as adventurers you would need clothing you could fight in, but would resist blood stains, but would also look fabulous. No one disturb me, I am going to my workshop!" She holed herself up in her workshop, and one of her daughters said she does that when she gets inspired. The Mourning Cloaks looked forward to having new, high-quality gear.

Lessons learned:

  • Having a session where your players run what's happening can be very relaxing.
  • You don't need a detailed world map, but come up with some idea of what's out there. And like I said last week, but didn't learn, come up with a list of place names you can attach to places as you have to think of them.
