Novel fan translation: Love Beyond the Grave
Main characters: He Simu, alias He Xiaoxiao, Sovereign of Spirits
Duan Xu, courtesy name Shunxi, cult name Seventeen
So it's this today and then the rest of the episodes tomorrow as far as I can tell
Ep 35: He Simu gets to taste stuff and she eats all the meat pies away from her little bro Xue Chengying.
After He Simu leaves, Duan Xu starts spitting blood. Hejia Fengyi tells him it's the backlash from exchanging senses so he should stop doing that. Duan Xu doesn't care that it's killing him, he wants He Simu to remember him and exchanging senses is the only thing that makes him stand out to her, so he's going to keep doing it.
Immortal/mortal pairing of pain
Luda and Yan Ke prepare a ghost poisoned arrow to kill Duan Xu. Duan Xu and Xue Chengying are fighting and waiting for reinforcements when he's hit. He Simu feels that something is wrong from the void and teleports in (the soul-matism!)
Duan Xu will die in a day unless there is an antidote to the poison. He Simu visits Luda, but he demands the ghost lantern. She tells him Duan Xu will die anyway, no deal. Then she goes to visit her parents' grave.
He Simu reasons that since her entire life is sacrifice, what's waiting 300 years for another spell bearer? But she decides in the end to save Duan Xu. When he wakes up, she's angry that he got so close to death but never called her. She also realizes how badly changing senses is harming him and breaks up with him.
He tries to run after her but realizes that his ability to see ghosts is gone, so it's really over
Duan Xu makes me so sad because he only believes that people will love him if he's useful, which is why he's trading senses to death so that He Simu will stay with him. This part of the novel spells it out:
Duan Xu kissed her forehead, gently patting her back. If her hunger was because she had never lived in the world, if her greed was to perceive this world, then he would strive to help her achieve that. “If you like to bite, then bite. You want my five senses, and I’ll give them to you. Willing to feed you with my flesh and blood, to free you from hunger, to comfort your coldness."
Novel reader rant: >!This is frustrating because they really destroyed the emotional impact of this scene. In the novel, Duan Xu never calls, but He Simu always would have come. It's because he doesn't want to burden her. In this, she really was unable to come for five years, so why would he call for her anyway? They made him seem more rational and her anger less understandable. In the novel they are both dealing with their things, war and the void, but they meet regularly the whole time. But I'm also happy because I love the angst of this scene so it's like, irritating. !<
