Ep 36: He Simu seals off the void and destroys spirits who challenge her, even without her lantern. Yan Ke can't figure out how to make the lantern work. Duan Xu wants to speak with He Simu one more time. Hejia Fengyi asks Simu for him, but she only tells him to protect Duan Xu. Hejia Fengyi is also not doing very well health wise. He asks Zi Ji if she really thinks the world is just if he and He Simu are forced into their roles, even if it all operates smoothly. She doesn't seem to care.

(The drama never really got into this, but Hejia Fengyi has a special bloodline that means he's extremely magically powerful, but cannot live past 40. It's so that power won't corrupt and this system was designed by Zi Ji. He Simu is also part of her plan. Hejia Fengyi marched up to heaven in his youth and demanded fairness, which is why Zi Ji is even there)
Duan Xu has some new special arrows to win his war. The emperor has fallen ill and the princes are fighting out succession in the capital. Fang Xianye visits the emperor, who wants his son Jin to take the throne and sends an order for Duan Xu to return to the capital to help. This order is intercepted and burned.
Duan Xu is captured by Yan Ke, who threatens to kill him. He Simu tells Yan Ke the big secret, her vital point (the only way to kill her) is in the lantern. Yan Ke doesn't want to destroy the lantern, so he can't kill He Simu or control the lantern while her soul is in it. Catch 22!
Yan Ke tells Duan Xu that if he trades senses with He Simu when ordered, he'll get to stay with Simu (lol, like he would betray her). North Chong attacks while Duan Xu is captured and Xue Chengying offers to lead the forces against them. He dies.
He Simu buries him. Then she goes to attack Yan Ke. Duan Xu tries to trick Yan Ke into giving him the spirit lantern, but Luda shows up and eats it instead. That does not go well for him. Duan Xu is very injured again. This guy cannot catch a break.

He Simu explains that she left Duan Xu mostly because she knows he's going to die and she can't bear losing him. Then she tells him that Xue Chengying died.
Novel: >!Duan Xu is supposed to eat the lantern! Theftery of the highest degree! And that's how they defeat Yan Ke. This drama wants him to live forever. No fair.!<
Ep 37: Hejia Fengyi tells He Simu that he can't save Duan Xu. She returns to the void with a little spirit hanging around her. Luda convinces Yan Ke to teach him how to use the spirit lantern so they can both fight He Simu and Duan Xu. He Simu makes Duan Xu medicine while the little ghost follows her around. Duan Xu and his generals are sad about losing Xue Chengying.
The emperor is angry at Duan Xu for not returning to help him. He says he will reward Fang Xianye. Duan Xu is getting ready for the next campaign, as he's got 11/17 prefectures recaptured.

The old emperor dies and his son takes over. Duan Xu wins his wars. Fang Xianye's secret edict is stolen and we find out that it will both promote him and execute Duan Xu for treason. Fang Xianye meets Duan Jingyua. He asks her to call him brother (again).

The edict is read, but Fang Xianye claims that he forged it. He then runs into a pillar and kills himself to save Duan Xu. (I've seen the pillar thing in multiple dramas/novels, so it must have happened? But can you really do that to yourself? I'm curious). Duan Xu's father is so pleased that Fang Xianye is finally dead (jerk). Duan Jingyua is depressed about it. (that's all the >!canonical deaths!< from the novel she thinks to herself...)

Duan Xu is still dying from sense exchange. He Simu turns up to heal him and tells him that she can't deal with death either even after 400 years.
Novel: >!They are ruining this love story for Yan Ke. By now He Simu should just be hanging out with Duan Xu and his precious short lifespan but NO, gotta have her running around doing ghost things instead.!<
Ep 38: Duan Xu meets the new emperor at Fang Xianye's grave. Duan Xu promises to take back the last of the prefectures, but also tells the emperor that he's dying.
Duan Xu also visits his father and severs their relationship. He tells He Simu that when he was young (5!), he fell in a pit and his father told him to just get out himself. Later he learned his father did actually wait to see if he got out, but myself and He Simu are like, "No, that's still terrible parenting, sorry"

Duan Xu prepares his armies for the last big battle. Han Lingqiu (the other 17) returns. Hejia Fengyi tells He Simu that Duan Xu will probably only live for 2 more years because he refuses to rest and is very ill. At the battle, the sky breaks open and a bunch of ghosts appear to fight against Duan Xu's army

Only Duan Xu's special sword seems to work against them. He Simu and Hejia Fengyi arrive to help fight. Luda gets angry at Yan Ke because the ghosts are killing people on both sides. Crazy how his deal with the devil isn't working out! But it turns out Yan Ke turned him into a puppet... or maybe not. They fight. This little spirit from way back when turns up:

She destroys the special artifact that keeps Yan Ke hidden so He Simu can finally find him. They fight. The soldiers are losing against the ghosts, so Hejia Fengyi makes all their weapons capable of fighting ghosts, before collapsing.

He Simu defeats Yan Ke, but when she tries to pull the lantern out of Luda he attacks it, causing her to sparkle which is always a bad sign!

He Simu thinks she's going to die and honestly seems pretty chill with that. Yan Ke defeats Luda before he can destroy He Simu's vital point and it rejoins with her body. Also, the little ghost following her around absorbed some stuff.
Ep 39: Xue Chengying takes human form from being a jellyfish ghost. Yan Ke claims to die for the one he loves but that's just silly, he didn't love anyone. Luda tries to kill He Simu but Duan Xu stops and kills him.

Hejia Fengyi wakes up okay. Duan Xu gives back military power since he won, but he's dying. Xue Chengying is dropped off in the void, his obsession is protection.
He Simu visits her parents' grave and says she'll bury Duan Xu there when he dies. He tells his generals that he's going to go wander around with He Simu. These two are together:
He Simu and Duan Xu go back to the cottage he made her to hang out until he dies very soon. Hejia Fengyi confronts Zi Ji, who tells him that since she as an immortal who dictates what is right and wrong, she must be right. He tries to throw himself into the river and she grabs him.
He Simu sees Duan Xu sleeping and clearly worries that he's dead, but he's not dead yet. They paint an umbrella together.
Ep 40: Duan Xu and He Simu get married in the void. He gives her all five sense at once.
They go watch the sunrise on a mountain in the mortal world. He Simu asks Duan Xu if he regrets meeting her and dying to give her senses, but he says she's the best thing that happened to him. She says the same. He starts dying and He Simu has flashbacks to him dying in her dream, way back when they were in the ghost prison.
OKAY STOP! STOP RIGHT HERE at 24:32 and watch the extra (Ep 41). Do not continue!
Still here? Anyway, Duan Xu dies. But then the dude who literally just said he only lives for the present and was honestly pretty chill about dying very early because he shared his senses with He Simu, somehow decides he will come back as a ghost (grrrrr).
Xue Chengying becomes the new ghost king. Hejia Fengyi says He Simu will be happy-ish. But I disagree and I hate this ending and it's stupid (sorry if you like it, no one pays me to write these so you get my opinion. It took me five days to fully watch this episode because I hate it so much). He Simu is wandering around the mortal world with her Duan Xu jellyfish. The stupid end.
Why I hate: >!Because He Simu hates being a ghost and loves the mortal world. I don't care if they are together, she's still stuck in purgatory with no five senses. Also, she is mortal-sexual (literally all her past lovers were mortal), she will not love ghost Duan Xu I don't care what the drama wants me to believe. Read the novel! (last two chapters and the two extras)!<
!ALSO, Xue Chengying only works as the new ghost king because he wants to protect Duan Xu and He Simu, and their descendants, which... they aren't having offspring and also don't need protection as ghosts. Stupid ending.!<
BUT WAIT!
Extra Ep 41: Zi Ji appears on the mountain as an immortal and is like, "My system is perfect." He Simu thinks this is BS. As a favour, Zi Ji allows them both to live as mortals, though He Simu has to give up her powers, which she doesn't mind because she always wanted to be mortal (like I said!!!)
This ending is much better but still annoys me because in the novel, Hejia Fengyi successfully argued that he (and his bloodline) and He Simu deserve a choice, and Zi Ji gives in and allows them to chose. Hejia Fengyi and his line will be able to give away their powers at 30 and live full lives. The ghost king will be able to sacrifice ghost powers for love and die as a mortal. It's a permanent change, not a reward or one-off. Anyway, this is much better so go find it if you didn't know it existed.
Read the novel instead! The casting was great and so were so many scenes but this ending just killed it for me. Anyway, I hope other people enjoyed it. Off to watch Veil of Shadows and Perfect Crown (Kdrama)
