Semi-daily hero tips. Day 109: Winter Wyvern

DISCLAIMER

A lot of you probably know about the weekly hero discussion, but that often ends up in a meta discussion (whether or not the hero needs buffs, etc) or a meme war than actual tips to play, itemize and build the hero.

This is what I'd like to do. Please discuss any notes I made and possible improvements while also giving tips of your own if you have them.

The roles, skill builds and item builds, as well as a lot of the notes are my opinion on matters and should not be seen as a must do or don't. Also remember that almost every single build or role is situationally possible.

A lot of the tips on heroes were also mentioned in tsunami's amazing hero tips series he did over the last couple of years.

Winter Wyvern

Notes:

  • Attack as many different targets as possible while under the effects of arctic burn.
  • Arctic burn is a good chasing tool because of the attack range buff.
  • Arctic burn is a short duration, so use it when already near a cliff to escape.
  • Arctic burn does NOT give flying vision
  • Splinter blast does NOTHING on the unit you cast it on
  • However, it IS a great tool to break linken's sphere! (/u/Lyramion)
  • You can farm some stacks with splinter blast, even though it has high mana cost
  • Splinter blast is a good skill to find first bloods in lane because of the slow.
  • Cold embrace makes you immune to physical damage, but you will still get fury swipes stacks on you, you will still lose mana from diffusal/mana break (but no health from the latter since it's physical) and still get stats stolen by OD and Slark when attacked.
  • OD and Silencer can also still orb attack you with their pure damage during cold embrace.
  • Friends: Axe (cold embrace after berserker's call duration), Huskar (cold embrace when he's really low), Oracle (double the heals, double the immunities), Magnus (RP into AOE skills, into winter's curse), AM (cold embrace), Slark, OD, MK, Ursa (can still steal stats/get stacks from winter's cursed heroes)
  • Good versus: Void (cold embrace in chrono. Bashes will still do damage), CM (ult her when she ults), Meepo (always a kill with your ult), LC (cold embrace dueled target), Troll, LS, Sven, WK, CK (single target to cold embrace, high damage on allies when you ult), VS (single target hero, focusses on physical damage), Visage (familiar splinter blast + winter's curse)
  • Counters: Timber, Lesh, Pugna (High magic burst), Furion, Sniper, Naga, Tinker (often alone, hard to curse with allies around), OD, Silencer (pure orb), AM, PL (mana burn through cold embrace)
  • The AOE of winter's curse is constant. Which means, if you come into the AOE of the allied hero, you will stop to attack it.
  • BKB will allow you to walk in the winter's curse AOE without attacking your ally
  • When roaming as a duo, get as close as possible, use arctic burn and immediately use splinter blast on the nearest creep
  • You can be pretty aggressive in lane to zone out the enemy laners
  • None of WW's spells (except the 2 slows) can be dispelled. Not even by strong dispells like dark pact, kraken shell, etc. This also goes for the positive debuffs WW can apply.

Role: lane support

Item build: TP scroll(!!!), Tranquils + Soul ring/Arcanes (+ Urn), (Eul's, force, blink, sheep, vlad's, pipe, shiva's, glimmer, aether lens)

Skill build: lvl 1 arctic burn, max splinter blast, value point cold embrace (max last).
